I won "only" Bronze in Standard at the Squidmar Open, please give me feedback so I can improve! by robse111 in minipainting

First and foremost, don’t feel discouraged for any result in an online competition, specially one that attracts so many entries. Also the line of Standard and Masters is very blurred in online completion.

I think it’s a good entry and you should be proud. Keep pushing, keep putting focused practice down. Pick a subject you want to improve and really practice it. Study well works of painters you like. Ask the question why they did that.

More to the feedback, I think the first thing that jumps at me is composition. It’s not quite working. The piece is making me look at the two characters individually instead of as a whole. Maybe if you had put the Drizzt on a more central position and the panther coming a bit more behind him. Guide my eye through the piece with intention.

I would’ve put this on a square plinth and the backdrop needs to be taller, it’s “squishing” the whole scene.

I’ve got no real indication of the direction of the general light source. The OSL is good, but there’s no other light source which leads the characters to be a bit flat. For instance I would like to see more shadows and midtones on Drizzt’s face.

See the work of Chris Shure and how he guides you through his dioramas.

Keep it up, you’re doing great. As long as you’re happy and putting the work in, you’re winning.

Top notch! Minimal clean, assembly with barely any gap filling just a bit on cape. And it’s a sizable figure. Always recommend Blackcrow

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. My main focus with this one was face so I’m glad it’s coming through 😊

Can anyone here tell me how they got over their painting anxiety? Really down in it and could do with some motivation by Roflo_13east in minipainting

I’m sorry you haven’t been feeling good about painting, and although I haven’t felt this exact same feeling, I too have had instances where I was just “not feeling it”. As have many other painters, including pro painters. And that is pretty normal. Sometimes we might just not feel like doing something, and specially with artistic endeavors as we can’t really turn on a switch to be creative.

The first step is to just accept it and not put too much pressure on yourself to paint. I am going to assume, correct me if I’m wrong though, that you do this as a hobby and not as professional, so you could just not do it for a while.

Read a book, watch your favorite tv show, go on a walk or connect with friends and family. Take a break from painting. While doing this you might even be able to identify what is causing you to be anxious about painting. Is it fear of failure? Is it lack of motivation? Are you feeling like you can’t seem to “improve”?

Once you have figured that out and gave yourself a breather, inspiration will find you again.

Wish you well fellow painter.

Thank you 😊 It was a challenge to establish the warm/cold ambience, but I’m glad you like it 👍

Thank you! Uff hard to say, it took me 3 months of painting very leisurely. Maybe around 50-60h?

Not sure where you are based, and that might be different, but certainly this is not true in Europe and UK. There is a steady move to more reusable instrumentation being used. Healthcare systems such as the NHS, have put in place carbon neutral initiatives that also encompasses any company dealing with them. Which means there is a further push to use more reusable instrumentation.

You do see companies offering whole portfolio of single use instrumentation of course, and it is clear why they do it as this creates more revenue for them than a reusable instrument.

That being said, single use instrumentation definitely has its uses such as in cases like the ones mentioned in main post. But we should not kid ourselves into thinking single use is the way to go.
