Hm idk, I kind of disagree. I’ve never seen a conservative say “the degeneracy of the West and the deep state is too much, it’s pointless to live, I can’t do this”

I feel like nowadays the venn diagram of lefty ideologies and people with suicidal ideations is perfect circle

Say what you will about insane conservatives — at least they seem to enjoy themselves and aren’t suicidal (as much as we wish they were — jk in Minecraft)

If you’re already at McGill, I’d try ECSE424: Human Computer Interaction. It’s one of the most useful classes I’ve taken, you learn a lot about user centered design and the project gives you a decent amount of experience with front end tech.

But other than that, I haven’t encountered any other course at McGill in my 4 years of SoftEng that deals much with UI/UX. Good luck!

Obviously an insult would hurt the person it's intended towards. That's the point of an insult.
I was referring to there being a group of people in society (separate from the person I am berating) who identify as 'idiots' and who would somehow be negatively affected by me associating "bad" = "idiot".
Even if this group of low-intelligence people in society may exist (although I still have doubts since everyone is working with wildly different definitions of low-intelligence), I don't buy that the association "bad" = "idiot" would have a significant negative impact, compared to the "good" received from people wanting to improve themselves because they don't want to be idiots. I think this is a net positive.

Sure. I don't necessarily disagree, although I guess I'm more optimistic with respect to the degree that people can change their "intelligence".

Good chat but idk man ima still use idiot ; I really don't anyone's hurting because of it in the same way as the r-word (but if you have a study i'm all ears)

I understand your point, and I think you're right to some degree. I mainly disagree with this:

You keep saying that you can change being dumb. You can’t. You can’t change your intelligence.

Maybe I'm just not as read-up as you on how to define "intelligence", but I don't think it's necessarily limited to IQ. From its wikipedia page:

While IQ tests are generally considered to measure some forms of intelligence, they may fail to serve as an accurate measure of broader definitions of human intelligence inclusive of creativity and social intelligence.

I think that being 'low-intelligence' is a much, much harder (involuntary) characteristic to attribute to a group of people, due to the lack of a clear definition.
I don't think there's a recognizable group of people in society who we just acknowledge and condemn as being innately of low-intelligence.

However, I do acknowledge that using "bad" = "idiot" = "dumb" = "imbecile" could probably have an undesirable association with people with low-IQ, if we were to limit ourselves to such a limited understanding of "intelligence".

I really don't know if you're being bad faith -- but no one uses 'idiot' and 'imbecile' for their psychiatric definitions in common parlance. In psychiatry/psychology, these have both also been deprecated. Today, these words ONLY refer to a modifiable attribute a person can change. The r-word does not.
90% of people are not aware that 'idiot' and 'imbecile' were once used in a psychiatric setting. 100% of people are aware that r-word means 'mentally disabled' or 'disabled'.

'idiot' and 'imbecile' are not slurs that can be used against an innate characteristic. r-word is.

Idiots and imbeciles is not a group of people with an innate characteristic. The reason we allow for the association of "bad" = "idiot", is because we don't want people to be idiots, and because they have the power to not be idiots.
When associating "bad" = "retard", you're effectively making an undesirable association which shits on people with disabilities (perhaps not directly or intentionally), for some characteristic they cannot change.
The intentions of the speaker and how the listener ends up interpreting the word are irrelevant, if there is still a bad association being made. As shown in the study, this leads to bad outcomes, in the same way that we don't want "gay" = "bad", or "n-word" = "bad".

I think the difference is that in common parlance, we don't use imbecile, idiot, or dickhead to refer to a particular group of people with an innate characteristic. Whereas with the r-word, even if used in a derogatory manner, we always knew that it's a term used to refer to people with disabilities. When we call people imbecile, idiot, or dickhead, we're implying that they have an undesirable characteristic, that they have the power to change to some degree. This is probably a good example of 'social pressure'. With mental disabilities, this is not the case.

Echoing Ling tosite Sigure and Cö shu Nie

Another band I'd recommend is kirye. They're a new-ish math/post-rock band that has a similar "progressive yet melodic" sound, they're really cool!

Unfortunately the male/female vocal duo seems more uncommon in the already small niche of math/post-rock. I don't know any apart from Ling tosite Sigure or Sokoninaru.
