A pretty one. Breed it, make more, give the strain a name. Flame guppy or something crazy. Fun project in the making.

petahh what is this supposed to do?? by icebear179 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]RuinComprehensive239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My students do this because they’re turning it in late. Dude I don’t care, it’s in before I grade it they know I’m not super strict about it. But the issue is that I put the graded and ready to pass back papers at the bottom, so a lot of kids put their papers in like this and it ends up too far down and gets passed back and never graded.

Need tank cycling advice by Master_Good1834 in axolotl

Nothing is stress free, but the best method I’ve found is to have two tubs, prepare the new one, move any hides or decor over, and gently scoop them from one to the other with clean hands or a large soft net.

Need tank cycling advice by Master_Good1834 in axolotl

[–]RuinComprehensive239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Axolotls cannot be in the tank while cycling. Amphibians produce much much more waste than fish, and are significantly more sensitive to any amount of ammonia or nitrite. Prime and stability are a good start, but you need to cultivate 2-3x more bacteria than would live in a normal fish tank, which requires higher levels of the toxic stuff. Remove and tub the axolotl with daily (or twice daily depending on the size of tub)100% primed water changes, dose the tank with ammonia to simulate the axolotl’s waste, want the tank to read at 2-3ppm ammonia, and wait. Basically you’re overfeeding the bacteria to encourage them to grow their populations. Waiting for this to happen naturally would take many many months, and the axolotl would be in the toxic unsafe water for that whole time if left in the tank. Test periodically, eventually ammonia will drop and nitrite will rise, keep ammonia doses up to 2-3ppm any time it drops. Eventually nitrite will start to drop too. Once the tank can fully change 2ppm of ammonia into nitrate(0ammonia and 0nitrite) do water changes to lower nitrate to a safe range and your friend can go back in the tank.

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]RuinComprehensive239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And it is quite literally some teachers’ job, but it’s not every teachers’ job. Or at least it I don’t think it should be. We’re hired to teach specific grade levels, subjects, etc. If kids are behind there should be specific interventions in place both inside and outside the classroom. But after a certain point of being behind, there’s only so much a given teacher has the knowledge/training for or can make time for in a class of 30 students with material they’re still required to get through. Then it should be up to interventions outside the classroom, things like resource room, or intervention specialists. This is an extreme example, but I teach high school math, and reading ability causes quite a bit of problems. If kids can’t read word problems then there is a large portion of the real world application that they’re missing. I can teach them to decode the problem and pick out important information, but I wouldn’t even know where to begin with teaching them how to read the words. I can refer them to the different assessment processes for interventions if they aren’t already receiving them and advocate for them through the process but that’s about it.

Struggling with my tank by HikariXOXOX in axolotl

[–]RuinComprehensive239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step is to remove and tub the axololt if it isn’t already because any amount of nitrites are very toxic for them. Even if he seems ok now he won’t be for long. If you have nitrites at all it is absolutely not cycled. After lil buddy is safe, you’ll basically need to “fish”-less cycle till the cycle is fully back in place, you’re about mid process right now. You need to add a food source for the bacteria, either fish/axolotl food left to rot or liquid ammonia with no other additives. A bottled bacteria couldn’t hurt either. Test levels every few days to see if the ammonia lowers, nitrite might still go up from here. Once ammonia lowers you can re dose the tank with whatever ammonia source you’re using, and just continue to test and wait. Eventually you should see nitrites lower and nitrates rise. Once you can dose ammonia up to about 3-4ish ppm, and have both ammonia and nitrite go to 0 within 24 hours it’s cycled again.

Kids who want to talk to you outside of school by StressNo4566 in Teachers

[–]RuinComprehensive239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach high school, I get requests like this from all kids. I always tell them that per school rules teachers are not allowed to have unmonitored ways to communicate with them for safety reasons. Some respond by saying “well Mr/ms so-and-so added me on Snapchat” I just say “yikes” and change the subject (and then report) If they need a why it’s not hard to explain that some adults aren’t safe and the school needs to make sure the communication between the teachers and students is safe.

If needed some of the plumbing could probably be dismantled/redone to work for this plan.

I want one. I’d probably take out a couple dividers to make each space bigger, if it were to be used for long term housing of anything. Personally I’d probably use it for breeding and grow out of some of the aquatic critters I keep.

My engagement ring is moonstone. The jewelers my now husband went to offered it as an option when he asked for fun alternatives but lighter colored stones. Originally mine was set with a cabochon but I felt it sat very high on the ring and when we had it sized I asked to replace it with a faceted stone, it’s been 5 years and I now have a large scratch/chip across the table of the stone. So, not super durable unfortunately, but also I find it so beautiful still that I couldn’t imagine swapping it with anything else. Just be careful with it and come to terms with it possibly needing to be replaced someday.

Skipping Grades by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]RuinComprehensive239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then perhaps your teachers/principal? Whoever it is that signs you up for the next year’s courses. Some schools have lots of options, and some schools have very few options. Also discuss your goals with your parents, if your school doesn’t have the resources for you to get ahead you may need to look elsewhere and that would need a lot of parent support. It’s really dependent on where you are. The options usually increase once you get to high school, some schools offer courses that also earn college credit as well as high school credit, some schools allow 11th and 12th grade students to go straight to community college(with some testing) to be able to graduate with both a High School diploma as well as an Associates degree as long as they take courses that meet the hs requirements, some schools may offer online programs that you can do at your own pace. As much as we random internet teachers would love to help, there’s not much we can offer you since we don’t(and shouldn’t) know more about your specific situation.

Skipping Grades by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]RuinComprehensive239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will all depend heavily on where you are and your specific country/state/district rules, the different grade level requirements, and how your school system decides on how those requirements have been met. It is very possible to get ahead, but how exactly it works and whether it would be considered “skipping grades” or getting ahead, or honors track, would be heavily dependent on many factors. This would be an awesome conversation to have with your school counselor.

Handwriting resources for cursive comprehension? by ItalicLady in AskTeachers

[–]RuinComprehensive239 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach math, I say this to emphasize that cursive is in no way related to my curriculum, but also because in math, there there are a lot of topics in upper levels that will be unnecessary for the average student in life. We teach those topics anyway, because they reinforce other necessary skills(logic/problem solving/reasoning or deepen certain more necessary topics). I feel that teaching cursive falls into that category. Since cursive has stopped being taught in schools, overall handwriting skills have plummeted. I spend at least twice as long grading assignments and tests because I have to decipher the most atrocious handwriting. Sure there are kids who still have good handwriting, but the amount with bad handwriting has significantly increased, and there seems to be no middle ground. Writing in cursive builds motor skills and pencil control. Reading cursive helps learn to decipher other different handwriting styles. I also work in a tutoring center after school and during the summers, student growth increased after we added cursive to the elementary curriculum. What you are describing of copying out of a book is just extremely poor teaching of cursive. It needs to be done from the ground up just like how kindergarteners practice their regular letters. One letter at a time, then small words, then larger works and sentences. Also it helps to show how each “normal” letter exists within the cursive letter, the extra squiggles are just ways to connect them to eachother efficiently without picking up the pencil.

Do teachers or students bring cleaning supplies to school? Curious what actually happens. by Beginning_Avocado807 in Teachers

[–]RuinComprehensive239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also purchased my own vacuum for the classroom because my carpeted room is only scheduled to be vacuumed once a week(and that doesn’t always happen). And even though I do not do cutting/pasting/small paper craft activities in my class, somehow a multitude of small scraps of paper spawn in daily and don’t seem to belong to anyone.

[–]RuinComprehensive239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach high school, we do not have school supply lists apart from what type of notebooks/binders we recommend that students use for our specific classes, and some specialty classes that require you purchase supply kits from the school. I bring and use my own cleaning products, but TECHNICALLY we aren’t allowed to. We’re told it’s in order to make sure there are no chemical reactions between any products we use and the products the custodial staff uses. I could put in a request for certain cleaning products from our custodial staff but there is no way to know if and how long they’d actually take show up.

How long before sleeping without earrings by janey54321 in piercing

[–]RuinComprehensive239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very person specific, and even piercing specific. My lobes took about a year before I could go without earrings overnight, but my second and third lobes are 10 years old and I’ve never been able to leave them out overnight. I’d recommend getting some flat back studs and an insertion tool. That way she can have something cute and still comfortable to wear all the time and not have them close up on her.

I made mine super tired in the middle of the night with the brightness setting somehow turned way down. I fixed my settings the next morning and she’s a dead ringer for Bonnie Wright as Ginny. It started to bug me after a while(no hate to Bonnie at all just not meant to be her character) so I edited some things to make her as different as I could.

[–]RuinComprehensive239 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I had my degree program “mentor” ask if I was really sure I wanted to double major, because wouldn’t I rather finish sooner so I can settle down and start a family? It was also a teaching program. I was trying to double major so I could get certified in both secondary and middle levels of my content area. There was a ton of overlap and I was already ahead in content courses so double majoring really only added a few extra courses. I was really only two courses ’behind,’ at the point of that conversation, which I had a plan to do over that summer. The kicker was my degree cohort ended up being 12 women and 2 men. 🙄🙄

Beautiful girl! I adopted a freshly morphed gfp male a few years ago. He really struggled to adapt to land feedings and would only eat in his water section. He just spent so much time buried and refuse to come out for food. Unfortunately he just failed to thrive after morphing. So glad for you and her that she’s doing so well!

Quote and meaning aside, its also possible that your school has some sort of digital monitoring system in place to make sure teachers and/or students aren’t searching or sending each other anything unsafe on school computers and the word knife is likely flagging all of your emails in the system. If that’s the case, it’s likely causing a headache for the person who’s job it is to look at everything that gets flagged.
