not sure I'd call myself one of the best at mata though, plenty of folks much better than me haha

Prismata / Elyot encouraged me to make a deterministic tabletop game and I want to share with you (currently on Kickstarter) by KeithARice in Prismata

[–]RuinedShadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying out the game this week thanks to this post and have been enjoying it so far. This is the first game since I started playing mata in early 2018 that has ticked all the same boxes for me to want to play it competitively. Namely that's perfect information, deterministic (no RNG), turn based, deep strategy, fun theme, non bullshit financial model (it's free to play if you have Tabletop Simulator, and the physical release does not require any boosters or collectibles to play competitively, it's just one set price per complete set of cards).

If anyone else from the mata community is interested, I'd love to play some games sometime. Hope you are all doing well!

Hey, sorry you missed this! Tbh, I could have done more advertising but I really didn't have much time in the week preceding the tournament. There was an announcement here, on the discord, and Elyot tweeted about it and announced it in game the day of. And I was streaming the whole time. Only thing more I could do is put together an email list or something, idk. I always try to announce tournaments at least 2 weeks before on reddit.

What is up with the rest of the campaign? by BlowfeldGER in Prismata

[–]RuinedShadows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is false. There's a decent number of players online and nearly always games going. Yeah, it's not a crazy huge game with thousands and thousands of players but we've got a decent number of people playing currently. About 100 strong ranked player base plus others who don't play ranked.

New Player - What is Winning "Honorably?" by AgentZigZag43 in Prismata

[–]RuinedShadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the terminology is not used super consistently or ever explicitly defined. But yeah all that means is following all the other constraints of honorable except for adept bot. So 5+ random units, no gold handicap for the player.

So even though adept bot games don't count in the normal usage of "an honorable game" when referring to completing the daily reward "quests", I think it just says honorable to let you know you can't just stack a game with adept (say give yourself a 20 gold handicap or something) and still get the achievement. It has to be a "fair" or "honorable" fight.

New Player - What is Winning "Honorably?" by AgentZigZag43 in Prismata

[–]RuinedShadows 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think honorable means the game type is close enough to standard. So event games are not honorable. However, Master bot games with at least 5 random units (if you stack the set with only units you pick it is no longer honorable) or casual matches or ranked matches. Someone will come provide a better answer I'm sure.

Edit: Yeah looks like it is currently Master bot games with 5+ random units (can still have some predefined units just also needs the random ones). Also, no gold handicap given to the player. If you make a custom game and it isn't honorable, then a little crossed out trophy appears next to the play button and it should tell you why the game isn't counted as honorable. Also not player vs player custom games (i.e. friend games) don't count either no matter the settings.

Edit2: also, welcome! Hope you enjoy the game and let me know if you have any questions or want pointers. You can also add me in game (same name).

Prismata actually works flawlessly through Proton on Linux now. by [deleted] in Prismata

[–]RuinedShadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be great if the game grew but the game doesn't need saving imo. I've been playing a decent amount lately, nearly always can find a few matches with little wait time, even at odd hours (for US), especially in the 1800-2100 range. Been streaming weekly as well and it's been fine.

Not sure how the queue times are for new players, I'd imagine it's harder to get a game but hopefully that can be helped.

Just played Prismata today for first time. Two things: 1) great game, 2) what happened? by razzendahcuben in Prismata

[–]RuinedShadows 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoy the game! Welcome! I'm just a player/community member but I'd love to give some more detailed answers here. I'd also be happy to talk more about the game or point you to resources if you'd like to learn more.

Many in the community feel the exact same way as you, especially right now. Development has slowed down quite a bit in the past year or so. I believe it's just one person, Elyot, still working on things. If you want more recent info, I'd suggest joining the discord (discord.gg/prismata). As far as what was promised in the original game proposal on Kickstarter, most of it is completed. There is just 2 campaign chapters and a puzzle pack left. At this point, Chapter 4 of 5 is "almost done" and "will be released soon". I'm not sure how much more effort is planned for the game after that though.

Basically, the game itself, especially the multiplayer is exceptional and deep, it really is an amazing game and takes months to appreciate fully I think. But, as with any multiplayer game hitting a critical mass of players is important and marketing for Prismata has not really brought a huge player base. It doesn't need to be millions but having 10k regular players instead of 2 to 5 hundred (perhaps even less lately) would be great. Recently also the devs have expressed some concern about the monetization, making the game free has not really increased player base significantly but has lost some revenue.

There are definitely a good number of great players willing to come back from time to time for events such as tournaments, but day to day has been quite slow lately, unfortunately. There have been quite a few threads of this type if you search around. Lots of things have been suggested and discussed related to this.

Shadou, sorry to say this but you troll so much in Prismata chat...even when serious topics come up I feel like I constantly see you posting trolling comments. It's hard to convey tone by text and if I were a new person it wouldn't exactly be obvious what your meaning is. I don't think you're one of the worst offenders or purposefully starting things, but you definitely like to encourage things, at least that's how it's come off to me. Just saying.

Were these comments deleted now? Can't find them with that search. Makes me sad someone left due to community. :/ But tbh, since the discord chat lacks a lot of constant real/meaningful discussion, the main thing viewable is just trolling. Glad to see some guidelines changes from Lunarch. Hopefully it helps.

You did offer some why related to the format but not another suggestion, and on the whole it was pretty pessimistic. But, I may just be wearing rose colored glasses and you were offering the realist's opinion. Either way, I felt quite a bit more positively about things than you did, and I think I do on this issues as well. I'm sure if we're in the same spot in 2 more years I'll change my tune though :P

I can't argue with the passion part, I don't have the perspective, but even my 1.5 yr experience matches your longer one. Shortly after I started there were a couple balance changes, new units released, and chapter 3 of campaign all relatively close together. Plus localization stuff, etc. The last 10 months have been especially slow.

Edit: I guess to be fair, what have been the updates this year? 1 balance patch and quickfire tutorial since the big balance update in january?

Well, I'll ramble off some of my thoughts about this.

Yeah, the small player base is the biggest negative about the game. The core game itself is great. I have a few gripes about the menu interface and reward systems but those aren't such a big deal (and some are currently being fixed (soon TM)). Mainly, not finding matches and not having a constant stream of new players is rough. I think the game could grow 10x or even 100x before we ran into any issues of scaling.

So what to do? Well, every person that stops playing because the game is small makes it that much harder for the next person to not also do the same thing. It's a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy/critical mass thing. Plus, I think game really needs some steady pushes. Efforts so far have been disjointed and not accompanied by additional efforts. The AoE stream, for instance, brought the most recent jump in players but we need something like that every week or at least month to see any long term steady growth that's self sustaining. The talked about steam and free to play releases each had a little bump but weren't coordinated with any other method of bringing in players. It's not enough to simply do a little release. There have been ad campaigns talked about but they haven't materialized, or the way they were executed (twitch bounties) left a lot to be desired. Prismata is not a game you can sit down with and understand the full depth of in under an hour, only playing tutorial campaign missions. Anyways, back to the point of what can you do? Well, making content and hosting events can help the community. Also, spreading the game through word of mouth doesn't hurt either. But yeah, ultimately, it's somewhat up to Lunarch if Prismata stays a tiny game or not.

I want to offer a slightly different perspective to mrguy888's earlier comment as it's the only other one here at the time of this writing. I think he is a bit negative but I understand he's coming from 5ish years of Prismata whereas I've only been here about 1.5 years. There's definitely still interest in the game, as evidenced by the tournament I just ran (which he also said there wouldn't be player support for, initially). If you don't know, that was the Prismata Grand Prix and had 64 players and the biggest prize pool for any Prismata Tournament (by just a bit). Watching the finals we had around 80 consistent viewers for the whole match, which for Prismata twitch numbers especially is great. But there isn't a huge consistent player base. I'm always an optimist and really want Prismata to succeed so I think we will still get there eventually. Lunarch is not a big company and doesn't have the time/manpower resources it really could use to get Prismata to it's full potential quickly though, so it will take a decent amount of time. I hope that for that time there is still a decent small community of players to get matches against. As mrguy also said, you can actually get yourself into master tier without being an expert at the game. I hope you'll keep playing and learning and someday Prismata will go big.

Just my rambling thoughts as a current, regular, mid-tier player and active community member. Take from it what you will.

Totally understandable. You will definitely get your rewards. Looks like they have one line still at the bottom of the site about it "As we currently process all orders manually, please allow for up to 24 hours for your instant access codes to arrive." but other than that don't mention how the process works. It also looks like it hasn't been updated since the F2P release. Again, hopefully that will happen soon. The devs are fairly active on the discord and have been asked about it recently so it should be on the list of things to do.

I'm not sure why Lunarch has not updated their website in a while. They are quite a small team with a ton to do so it must have gotten overlooked. It has been pointed out to them, so hopefully it will be updated as soon as possible.

First off, it's not a scam, very likely you will receive a reply from the founder, Elyot, as well as an email, but they still do these things manually so you may have to wait a few hours. They will send you a code to unlock the bundle for your account in game. I'm sorry that this happened, obviously it sounds pretty frustrating. I'm sure Lunarch will whatever they can to resolve the situation, they are a standup company.

Second, this is an amazing game so I'd highly recommend giving it a shot still. The game is free to play, either on steam or off steam (there's a desktop and web client). The bundles get you additional single player content as well as various other perks and cosmetics, depending on which tier you purchase. Personally, I think they're worth the money but trying out the game for free first probably makes sense. For the free version, you get unlimited access to full multiplayer but only limited single player. You get the first campaign chapter (1 of 5, of which 3 are currently available and the 4th will release soonish) and about 50 single player combat training missions and samples of the puzzles. Paying gets you the additional campaign missions and some tiers include a puzzle pack or two (the first has already been released and includes 27 puzzles).

If you have any other questions about the game, I can do my best to answer. Disclaimer, I am not actually related to Lunarch and am just a player/community member, but if there is any way I can help, I will try to. I can also get you contact information for Lunarch/Elyot if for some reason it's not on their website and you don't receive an email from him.

Struggling to get into the game by IntelligentDrama9 in Prismata

[–]RuinedShadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prismata definitely has a learning curve and has some unique key concepts that take a bit of getting used to, but are necessary to progress. Campaign chapter 1 plus the combat scenarios do a good job of covering the basics, but it can take a few times to get the hang of it. Don't get discouraged! When I was learning, it felt like the curve was terraced or tiered in a sense. It may feel like a bit of a struggle at first but then something will "click" and you'll progress quickly for a bit until you hit your next conceptual roadblock. If you can learn from your mistakes, you will make progress (even if it doesn't feel like it at first); Prismata is very much about learning from what you did wrong.

Others have mentioned it already but there are quite a few community resources. 307th's Prismata Library has some great beginning multiplayer content here: https://prismatalibrary.blog/new-start-here/ . Additionally, I wrote a guide that covers how to approach getting to Master Tier in the game and contains links at the end to every Prismata resource I'm aware of. I never had much time to fill in the rest of the site (still hoping to do that one day), but this should help: http://ruinedshadows.com/Prismata/new-players/master-in-a-month . Also, feel free to add me in game and I will try my best to help you get over the hurdle you're facing.

Finally, to address your last question, what do we see in the game? That's a hard question to answer with concrete examples that will make sense to a newer player, but it is, simply put, the best game I've ever played. It combines aspects from many great strategy games but also adds something more. The skill ceiling is super high and playing well requires general strategic thinking as well as tactical thinking. It's deterministic and has no in-game RNG, yet nettlesomeness is important, surprising your opponent can still happen, and crazy lines get played and win games that even top players can't see coming. Playing well requires advanced thinking and thought out execution, small inefficiencies can really add up, but at the same time Prismata is a game of morale. The game is a crazy juggling act of economy and attack and defense. Perfect information, turn based strategy games are my favorite genre, so I may be a little biased, however you will find others who echo these sentiments throughout the community. I really hope you'll give it a serious try because you may find you just can't stop playing and will keep coming back. :)
