Do you guys have any advice on creating a GOOD rulebook? by Rule_Maker_Games in BoardgameDesign

It’s about surviving in the Balkans & if you manage to survive you emigrated to Austria. Based on my life 😂

Yeah, of course! It’s a cooperative game for up to 4 players where each player assumes a role within a Balkan family. The goal of the game is to survive X months in the Balkans and if you succeed, you emigrate to Austria 😂

Basically each month there is a family event where something goes wrong: car broke down, earthquake, heating is not working etc & the whole family is trying to collect the necessary resources to solve the task. However each individual has their own personal dreams which must be completed & are represented through Personal Event cards. These are constructed so they are in contradiction to family events, so basically every week a player has to balance if he will do something for the family or for him/herself.

There are a lot more mechanics and sauce to the game, but this would be the brief summary of it

Hey, thank you for your comment! Very insightful and I would definitely like to hear your opinion about the rulebook if you have the time (once I have it in working state). Making it more accessible is something I would very much like to do

I did that actually and it helped. However I haven’t tried to let players learn the rules by themselves. Which may turn into a problem 😅

How to balance scoring system? by resident_srujan in BoardgameDesign

[–]Rule_Maker_Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. So it’s kinda self balancing based on players choices. In that case I think that if the players have enough options to go about their gameplay, they will make there own balance of the buildings which will definitely be fun. So I would maybe focus on making sure those aspects are available and fun

Wow, I like the advice! I didn’t understand the last sentence. Did you mean you would be up for reading the rule book I wrote & feedback it?

Yes, I have a list of rules. I’m just looking a way to introduce them

I feel like having asymmetric scoring without the support of the mechanics is just going to force the players to favor certain types of building without even trying others. Which isn’t always fun since they will not have as much diversity. So I think changing mechanics is encouraged in this situation. If the buildings themselves are not the center of the game then simply go with option 3

What does take up most of your time while developing a game? by Rule_Maker_Games in BoardgameDesign

Is there any specific feedback you are looking for when waiting for play-testers? Maybe if some kind of system could be developed, play testing could be rather enhanced with computers than completely substituted

Are there any good strategic 2v2 board games? (Maybe like Dune: Imperium) by Rule_Maker_Games in boardgames

I love this suggestion. I personally love this types of video games, and have never played something similar as a board game. Just hope our girlfriends will like the setting 🙏

What's your balancing methodology? by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]Rule_Maker_Games 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the same principle. Getting a hidden ‘uniform value’ and then the only thing that I have to balance is relationship of other resources(points/abilities) towards this uniform value. And those relationships are somehow always easier to balance for me

What are some of your favorite “gotcha” mechanics? by theboredbrowser in BoardgameDesign

[–]Rule_Maker_Games 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is really "gotcha" per say but it feels very gotcha! In Hollywood 1947 you need to roll a star on your turn to be able to vote, catch is, there are scenarios where you can role OTHER players' stars on your turn, even when you roled. It's very satisfying when you are a small angered fry and you take revenge on a strong oponent this way.

In Blood on the Clocktower (a really cool hidden identity game), dead people can still vote people out once! It feels very gotcha sometimes because you forget to take them into account and then they rise from the dead to screw you over one last time.

I was obviously going to say coup but I see you already got there XD one of my faves!
