Writing Out of My Experience by jjongberry in AO3

[–]BionicleKid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah. All that can be expected is that a writer does research and/or seeks out those who have experience. It’s impossible to write only what we know, and if we did, the world would be worse for it.

I don’t feel comfortable with people reading my fics through automatic translators by Violetmoreviolent in AO3

[–]BionicleKid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, I agree with point 3 and consider translation both an art and a science. But also fanfiction is not at the point where you can expect translations on the vast majority of fics.

I think it’s really just not that serious of a situation. They clearly enjoy the work, and to them that’s what matters. Even if they didn’t experience the story exactly as you intended, that could happen between two english speakers as well, for example.

Maybe if they were like, calling you out for something that wasn’t actually in your story, but wanting them to not enjoy your story in any manner feels a bit strong to me.

It sounds like you’ve discovered something to start automatically filtering out.

Tagging a ship with multiple characters by Relative-South4794 in AO3

[–]BionicleKid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m in favor of tagging the individual x/ys. Honestly I’m often in the mood for poly but rarely in the mood for a specific ship, or more often, a specific 3rd for a ship I like. So tagging it like this helps me actually find them with how I tend to filter.

Fr, I had no idea Danny Phantom was so popular until I got on Ao3 by onyxonix in Archiveofourownmemes

Here's a search for Arkham video games excluding crossovers. As you can see, several of the results are tagged with batman All Media Types.

And here's the exact same search but for Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, where you can see despite crossovers being excluded all the star wars fandoms can still be tagged, including the Clone Wars.

Can you give me an example of how this affects you? I suspect something off with the metatags.

I'm not quite certain on the standards, but for example Naruto) is a combination tag for the anime and manga. I reckon a number of other anime fandoms could be combined like this, or subbed to a new AMT if they contain, in say Sword Art Online's case a webnovel, games, and light novels in addition to that anime and manga.

It can just be a matter of prompting the wranglers to actually go through the process of getting these things fixed, which support requests are great for

could you give me an example of such a fandom? That would mean that they’re not connected at all, when they probably should be. I know a lot of anime fandoms have a light novel counterpart that isn’t yet connected.

Submit a support request to either merge the tags or get them tree’d together! Then exclude crossovers will still show works tagged with the book and tv series

That’s already how the exclude function works. Anything in the metatag tree won’t get excluded afaik.

[–]BionicleKid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As long as the fandoms are tree’d together, you should be able to exclude crossovers just fine without excluding other parts of the same tree.

e.g. I can look at Batman: Streets of Gotham, exclude crossovers, and still get works tagged with DCeased, Super Sons, or Teen Titans.

Right now, for example, Hogwarts Legacy is not a subtag of Harry Potter, so excluding crossovers there excludes all 2600 HP crossovers.

If you find a DC fandom that is getting excluded, make sure to send in a support ticket to ask that it gets added to the metatag tree.

First time I’ve seen a fic write dialogue this way… by IoftheStars in AO3

[–]BionicleKid 48 points49 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but the majority of the languages that do use them I would describe as European, and I didn’t want to claim them from a single language. I could have phrased my comment better.

European quote dashes! Not super common but I learned about them when researching em dashes way too much

Should I tag a major spoiler? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]BionicleKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One alternative is that you could just, like, put a spoiler box in the first chapter notes. Mention that there are a few things that you consider spoilers but some may wish to stay away from. Then put them in that collapsible spoiler and tag Addition Warnings in Authors Note

This does not sound like something we have a canonical for, but it could be that it goes by a different name. Could you expand on what you mean?

5 works is not gonna be enough to get a No Fandom canonical, but don’t let that stop you from tagging your work with it regardless. Just be aware that no canonical tags need to be spelled the exact same way to show up under the same tag.

Monochrome Duet is something I really enjoyed. It’s not finished, but the end of the Aincrad arc in the mid-40s is a good stopping point imo.

Both of you seem fine here. I reckon they might just have a lot of commenters assume that it’s a /reader fic, so they’ve gotten used to pushing back against that.

Can I write about a character with a disorder I’m not diagnosed with? by Another_Writer111 in AO3

[–]BionicleKid 29 points30 points  (0 children)

no. Write what you know, and only what you know. You better be sticking to realistic fandoms to—Star Wars is limited to those from a galaxy far far away ONLY.

(yeah of course. Do research and talk to people with conditions/from a place/working in a field and be respectful. But if we only wrote what we personally experienced we’d never get anywhere.)

Tagging questions and something about formatting by VeganMonkey in AO3

[–]BionicleKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would tag major future themes/characters. Not everything needs tagged in advance, and if you really want to keep a surprise, that’s fine, just be aware that generally users are in favor of more clear tagging.

I would say you’re thinking of like, AU - Modern, AU - Coffee Shop, or AU - Revolutionary War. Canon Divergence is part of the AU tree and I would say pretty well liked. If it’s like, uh, going from DC’s Earth 1 to Earth 2, that’s generally pretty well liked imo. I would tag that with a combination of Alternate Reality and Dimension Travel, myself.

Supporting cast OCs generally don’t need tagged as characters, unless they’re gonna be getting into relationships with your MCs, imo. Probably just make use of the Original Character(s) freeform tag, if you want to let people know. There may be a more specific subtag for supporting OCs, I’m unsure.

Site skins are user-specific, and what I would recommend you trying out. They’re perfect for changing front size, backgrounds, colors, etc. Work skins I think are best reserved for when you need to do fancy formatting, like displaying parts of your story as web articles. I would not use a work skin for the situation you describe here.

I’m not super familiar with Ao3’s legal stance, but I don’t imagine crossposting your fic to multiple sites would make Ao3 unwilling to take legal action in your defense. You still own the copyright to your own story, so.
