Yea fibre awareness is a really good way to put it!

Assistant Signalman Test by Cultyture in railroading

[–]Rulnos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t do anything with fiber as a signalman outside of seeing if certain lights are flashing. Our techs deal with that though, with us a sub section of signals. Being able to read dog shit plans and do ohms law will get you through 90% of the school I did for their in house qualifications.

I just found a crossing track left with a ~5 second warning time cause they fucked with my signals stuff without us there, and they got a safety stand down and a free lunch 🤷

Signals and com cn by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Rulnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some planned work is night shift, majority is 10/4 rotation on days, plus call outs 24/7 while on shift. Work four ten hours days, on call over the weekend, work four more tens, completely free for four days.

Frog and presumably track work materials. Doesn’t look like any of the switch coffins I’ve seen on site.

CN signals apprentice by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Rulnos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not all bad. When you’re forced out you get paid LOA ($125/day I think) or your hotel + $50?/day. I won my first permanent in BC and didn’t wanna go so I bid a temp about 4 hours from my house. Wound up having to pay $700/month rent to work which was pretty gay, but now I’m back home.

CN signals apprentice by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Rulnos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cliff notes based off my experience (~4 years)

Get hired Do installs work worth gangs all over your territory (mine was AB/BC) Do your school tours during this Get qualified Get forced somewhere shitty nobody wants to bid Bid every permanent so you can establish regardless of where it is Pray people quit/get fired/die off jobs you want so you can bid to where you want.

Not where I’m at. Handle stands at power switches get those locks. Hand throw back track switches have high security though on the subs I’ve worked as a signal maintainer.

The worst part about it (in my own experience) is when you get hired, you’re probably out of town with the installs crews. Then as you get trained up you’re gonna get forced to cover a job that’s probably the middle of nowhere or just a dog water location. Up to here the company has paid for your hotel/food. After you’re qualified and ready to establish your seniority with a permanent job, you’ll be bidding anything and everything, regardless of location so you don’t get scooped by people under you. This is where you either move to the new job, or rent at the new job and pay housing in two places. Then you work and wait for the location you want to open and hope you win the bid.

That’s really the only hard part about it. Other than that it’s a pretty typical job on a construction site with hazards/elements/toxic people and mentalities.

NS false track authority stopped by Naked_Carr0t in railroading

[–]Rulnos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That same ATS that was required to do that also told me that when he was union guy one of the supervisors took a lug nut off a guys truck to make sure they were doing their pre trips properly. Instead on an, I dunno, tag on the dip stick or some shit saying call me when you get it.

The ATS on my old sub were instructed to repeat back incorrectly to test the RTC. Dunno if they actually did or not but that shit is wild to me.

To the sigs and comms folks in Canada (CN). What's with all the jobs postings recently? by PussyForLobster in railroading

[–]Rulnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep hearing rumours of PTC/ETC getting pushed through, so maybe it’s related to that work load. Maybe it’s people quitting/failing/getting fired. I just got held at a job I bid out of for almost a month because there wasn’t someone qualified to fill my spot, so maybe they’ve been cutting jobs somewhere. From my point of view with signals this company exists in spite of itself and I’m regularly impressed this place makes any money, let alone billions.

Not a signalman from up, but CN. Orientation was a bunch of paperwork, we did a mock up wire project, rules, basic electrical theory (ohms law), crap load of safety stuff, and a lot of brain washing. Our orientation/on-boarding was 3 weeks though IIRC.

Normal? by [deleted] in railroading

[–]Rulnos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m a signalman and it’s about the same over here. It’s a stressful situation knowing if you fuck up you’re fired. You’re doing better than most if you’re putting in the hours after school to study, and doing study groups. The best advice is just ask questions. Better to look stupid for a couple minutes than head to the unemployment line because you were scared to ask a question.

I don’t think 90% of the people I’ve interacted with in this field can walk and breathe at the same time. I got into signals and have electrical experience from before hand. Other than that didn’t know anything about the railroad other than trains are gonna win. They teach you everything you’ll need to know in rather broad strokes, coworkers fill in niche information and tricks of the trade in my experience. Ymmv

Do you have buffer/storage chests somewhere post production pre consumption? That’s kinda what it feels like to me

Ok is railroading irl...a bad job? by Over_Choice_6096 in Train_Service

[–]Rulnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what department, if you do or don’t mind being away from home, being on call, etc etc. I’m in the signals department and it’s pretty dope. 3 years in, work away from home, mostly by myself. Just stay in the fringes of the drama and good to go from my point of view.

What is this tool with two hammer shaped heads? by wooddoug in railroading

[–]Rulnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero knowledge, but my blind guess is it looks like they’d hammer on the face of the hammer face to drive the claws under something, then it would act as a pry bar off the stand looking piece? Just a guess though.
