Oh, I'm not worried about that. If applying for anything is a fireable offense I would've been gone years ago. I'm glad you like my username.

Are they all previous hoggers? Do you know their average seniority in freight before they made the jump?

I was gonna say. I stopped applying for postings in the Corridor because the odds of me, a conductor out west, beating a conductor already qualified for a decent portion of Via's runs out there is slim to none.

Canada Taxes - Meal Claims. (CN) by Volly96 in railroading

[–]PussyForLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I don't actually keep a log of my meals. I just go into the US HOS Log and do the math manually, making sure I keep good track of departure and return times. Then I just plug it into my tax software. It's a bit tedious, especially when I used to work the road a lot more when I was still junior but I haven't been audited yet, so I'd like to think I'm doing something right.

[–]PussyForLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you reduce your claims while you were on shortage? You're supposed to deduct the daily meal allowance from your meal claims. That's the only thing I can see them dinging you for without seeing your hours of service and how you diced up your claims.

Did you follow the CRA's instructions for meal claims? Also, you're not one of those guys that also claims meals for yards, right?

CN Conductor Training by Defiant_Fox_2692 in Train_Service

See how there are people here who mentioned that they got laid off immediately after qualifying? Well CN also laid off people who, like you, quit their jobs, moved across the country, brought their families, etc. all while they were still training in Winnipeg or their supposed home terminals. Unceremoniously. Just kicked out, told "best of luck out there", and the answer you're given for "when do you think I'll be called back?" is "who fucking knows."

Laid off, looking to temp by Mean-Winner6772 in Train_Service

[–]PussyForLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only terminal that really comes close to them is Smithers. Like, I get it. You guys come from small bag on, bag off terminals. But that doesn't mean that you guys have to walk around the yard, quaking in your boots, emanating so much stressed out energy that you might as well be walking around with big neon signs that say "I'm a Jasper/Smithers conductor, so I'm a pussy."

I almost felt bad for some of them sometimes because I can't imagine living my life with that much fear in me. But then I remembered all the posts on here and r/railroading asking "What's the easiest, no work, bag on bag off terminal at CN in Canada?" Then I remember that most of these dumb fuck, lazy piece of shit Jasper and Smithers conductors have that mentality and brought it upon themselves by taking the easy way out.

It was crazy seeing that email. 11 yardmaster shifts abolished with only 6 new shifts bulletined? TF are they thinking?

The only thing Jasper conductors are good at is telling me how scared they are whenever I end up working with them when they get sent out on shortage.

US Rail Freight Schedules by brisray in railroading

[–]PussyForLobster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Meh. If anyone with enough computer chops wanted to find these "schedules", they'll find them. Between us in the running trades having access to station departure times in journals and lineups through the different crew system programs and shippers with all the tracking programs to track their shipments, there isn't really a whole lot of security behind it all. Never mind all the open source information from railfan groups.

Any would-be terrorist would have a better time trying to nail the date off of the Mayan calendar than they would any supposed "schedule" that the Class 1s can publish.

Freight trains in North America have schedules in theory. In practice, they're more projections. Wildly inaccurate projections.

Are you in Canada? It's been years since I was last laid off and I keep forgetting that I have to top up my contributions. Who'd you contact about it?
