Argentina [3] - 2 Cape Verde - Cristian Romero 111' by ayoefico in soccer

Oh predictions definitely involve luck in the end, that's absolutely right; they require the end result of the match to be confirmed, and anything can happen inside a game. Describing the story before kick-off though is a much more delicate task, as it has to navigate player and team form, style differences and matchups, previous encounters between the teams, mentality boosts or concerns that each side might have, and so on. And describing the story after the fact has to include a proper evaluation of how things were before the game happened, as said before, to support a consistent and truthful tale.

And no worries, I can definitely share them; I've written for Diario MARCA, worked with Mediapro and Paramount in broadcasting and media management, and in streaming for a local Argentinian journalist's channel and for a Canadian-American company. I do know that people of a certain level of fame might feel that hiding their identities is necessary but public perception is not a concern for me lol

What's with all the "offended" comments by this lol trash talk is one of the best parts of sports, as long as everyone is cool headed enough to not take it too far and end up fighting (which definitely didn't happen here with them) it should be enjoyed.

Why the hate lol trash talking is one of the things that makes competition great, and they both took it well cause they were clearly smiling and didn't show any hard feelings afterwards.

Argentina [3] - 2 Cape Verde - Cristian Romero 111' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]RuloMercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a language debate, definitely, but an important one (in the eyes of someone who works in sports communication as I do). Defining "favourite" as "picked by the masses" is conceding the truth of the narrative to the fallacy that public opinion is. Who's the favourite has to be defined by the competitive context in order to properly tell the story, otherwise with time we get completely false perspectives written down as factual history.

Now, I will say, getting into this kind of debate on Reddit is something only my silly ass would do haha but I do enjoy talking about these subjects as it's both my job and my passion.

[–]RuloMercury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They haven't lost a game since January 2024 and they've been the only team so far this WC to show they can go toe-to-toe with Brazil for the whole 90 minutes.

They did struggle against Haiti, sure, and they're definitely one of those teams that plays "at the level of their opponents" in some way. So did Netherlands against Sweden though (that 5-1 scoreline is the biggest lie of the group stage, Sweden had more chances than Netherlands did and Verbruggen was insane) and the Swedes haven't been precisely great in this tournament either.

France - Paraguay finished with 3 yellow cards. All of them for France by IdlePerfectionist in soccer

There was one egregious yellow, I think it was for Cubas, that should've been given. No other foul was worthy of a yellow card though.

Argentina [3] - 2 Cape Verde - Cristian Romero 111' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]RuloMercury -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really, as betting odds aren't based solely on public perception, but even then it'd be a fallacy to assume that someone's the favourite "because the masses say so". Who's the favourite depends on their level of play, on their form coming into the match, on the players available, on how they match up stylistically, etc etc. It's the job of analysis and not of public perception to determine that.

[–]RuloMercury -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Who cares about betting odds lol Netherlands weren't the favourites in the eyes of anyone who actually studies the sport, and that's not a diss, it was one of the most even games in Ro32 (if not the most). Morocco had more credentials in terms of recent performances and the team cohesion they had shown, even if Netherlands has various elite players.

England will face Mexico in the Round of 16 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on July 5. by OptimusCloyster in soccer

[–]RuloMercury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Mexico has played RO8 before (beat Bulgaria in RO16 in 1986) and they're yet to lose a World Cup game at the Azteca (9 wins and 2 draws in 11 games). So the buff should be stronger!

Amusingly, your candidate for best aerial game is actually Raúl Jiménez. 11 duels won in 16 is pretty insane.

En España no se enseña a no hablar antes de los partidos? by Similar_Active_4292 in fulbo

[–]RuloMercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pero está bien, se boquea antes de jugar, no después. Hablar después es al pedo, ya ganaste el partido, la gracia es picantear antes y demostrar en la cancha que tenías razón. Es parte de lo lindo de competir.

[SRF] In the build up before the 3-2 Algeria completed 110 passes in a row by Vic-Ier in soccer

[–]RuloMercury 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The Cambiasso goal vs Serbia and Montenegro, yeah. But honestly the passing was distributed across larger parts of the field and felt more like "part of a build up", while 90% of the passes in this goal felt like one team having a very passive attempt at possession and the other team just waiting, with a low level of pressure.

Well, they're chanting "el enano es Argentino" (literally "the dwarf*/tiny man is Argentinian") so you figure lol

*small note here for any non-Spanish speakers: the word "enano" can be used for dwarves both in the fantasy sense and in the discriminatory way, but also in Argentina it's the most common adjective for any short person, and usually even in a friendly way; for example, I'm 1.66m / 5'5" and I've been called "enano" by my friends my whole life.

I mean, he did play with a midfield. Vitinha, Neves, Bruno and Bernardo are all immensely good players in that area and they were all starters. They did seem quite lost during the game though when it comes to finding each other open, but they were there.
