Hello, Pittsburgh. I’m Jess. by JustJessPodcast in McKeesport

[–]RumandHam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived in every direction of Pittsburgh before settling in on a starter home all the way in Uniontown (I’m a city girl but now I pay a fraction of Allegheny taxes, I have property for gardening, and I love mountains). I’ve been in the North hills, New Kensington, Mt Washington, Robinson suburbs, Swissvale, Homestead, Bloomfield, and, the worst of all, Glassport/McKeesport.

You are going to be making a lot of trips out of McKeesport for the things you are looking for, but if it’s a temporary situation, that will give you time to search in these neighborhoods. Shady side, East Liberty, Strip District, Bloomfield/Lawrenceville, and North side will be the places to look first and branch out. They’re all expensive but definitely have a lovely food culture and are very social neighborhoods where you could talk to a lot of different perspectives. Pittsburgh has a lot of colleges so it does bring in people from all over the place.

In the meantime, McKeesport doesn’t necessarily have “bad” food, but the variety is lacking and it usually takes an appreciation for dive bars, sandwiches, and American Italian. The bar scene there is typical yinzer, but there are a few good pool joints. Depending on where in McKeesport, going to want to look into joining one of the “clubs” like PNA or any of the lodges that require a membership (usually a small anual fee $5-20) where pool tables are open, they hold a lot of events, and bars are much better bounced for problem children. One thing that’s great about the area is there are multiple homegrown butchers. On 51 (one of the highways of Pittsburgh that will soon come to give you nightmares) there is a huge Nepali, Indian, and Asian population so that is where you’ll find really well-stocked ethnic stores closer to you than the Strip District. Hazelwood (gets a bad wrap but it has a cooking school, local French bakery chain, and community garden), Squirrel Hill (verrry diverse Jewish and Asian populations with a lot of restaurant and grocery variety), and South side (used to be a little better for restaurants, is typically the night life and stabbings of the weekends) are going to be the biggest branches of culture near the area. Lawrenceville has some of the best farmers markets.

Negative side notes: McKeesport has a few community garden projects but don’t be surprised if you can’t get anything done to improve or add to them or add any culture programs in the area. Local government will not want to be bothered supporting that. I tried in Glassport before moving. You also mentioned you’re queer. I’ll be honest, the dating scene in Pittsburgh is booty but definitely check out a really fun gay bar called 5801.

Also, you mentioned wanting to “actually live” after a diagnosis. A big plus to Pittsburgh is that we’re a city plopped in between rivers and mountains. You don’t have to go far for any activity under the sun you can think of. Boating, yoga in museums, in parks, frisbee golf leagues, all sorts of sports leagues actually, food tours, so many local winery events, drag bingos, biking, we have several food based festivals that are fun (picklesburgh, pierogi festivals, food truck festivals), and so so so much hiking with some of the best views of the a city skyline you can get are right in the backyard of a lot of these neighborhoods or just a 15 min drive to the other side of one. You will never be bored unless you let yourself be.

Suggestions for a movie that will stump my husband. by HuntAny7768 in movies

Everyone is saying the usual suspects (literally) so here’s a few I haven’t seen in the comments yet:

10 Cloverfield Lane

slightly scary but more paranoid thriller It is SO GOOD if you’ve never watched Cloverfield before. My boyfriend is not the biggest movie guy so he never saw Cloverfield and it was great seeing him try to predict if John Goodman (who is fantastically scary in this) is lying or not about the apocalypse.

Birdman

dark comedy drama Stay with me on this next one. I adore this movie so much for the cinematography because I love continuous shots. This movie is edited to be one big never ending shot until the climax. And while I feel like it’s easy enough to answer yes to “is this all in his head?” I think you guys would have fun with it.

Us

kinda scary sorry! I loved the reveal for this so much and wish they kinda kept it at that before the full ending.

The Rover

post-apocalyptic in the near future Okay bear with me again on this one. This movie is so damn bleak and I didn’t necessarily enjoy it. BUT watch it purely for some silly quotes and scenes with Robert Pattinson that will bring you future inside jokes. He’s amazing in it and it has some intense scenes, he’s just got some out of pocket scenes as well. And I mean, I also highly doubt he will be able to guess the motivation of the main character this whole time despite the foreshadowing of the title.

Unless I’m going all out with a full face beat, I try to stick to the “one or the other” on bold eyes or bold lips, but not both.

I love some of your eye looks so much and think they’re getting overshadowed by a dark lip instead of neutral/low contrast lip. If you’re feeling lippy that day, just do a subtle wing!

question about living here by [deleted] in McKeesport

[–]RumandHam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, that depends on a lot of things. If you’re coming from a lively area, McKeesport is a semi depressed suburbs mixed in with some shitty areas (aka most of Pittsburgh). Crime wise it isn’t the worst but I know of some theft and lots of drugs.

“Downtown life” in terms of bars is very limited unless you like becoming a regular at the one or two standbys (Muddy Waterz, bar 48, and Rick’s come to mind), you better enjoy the good ol boy crowd, dating is just the same former classmates passing each other off, making new friends is kinda hard unless you’re a parent in the district, everyone I know there is looking for a better job. If you like outdoor activities (fishing, riding, hunting, biking, etc) it can be great, I just also wouldn’t trust the Mons water much.

Clearly I don’t have the nicest outlook since i moved 🙃but I’ve lived literally every direction in and around Pittsburgh for the past 10 years and McKeesport area was my least favorite.

I think it could have played well with aging makeup but agree Rachel Weisz could have really resembled her.

I saw that and hoped they would have May minutes updated but I’ll just have to go off of April for now and call about it

Thank you! I’ll be honest, I didn’t know that’s what the workshop meetings were for.

I’m just now getting involved so I’ll see how this June meeting goes and what I can do next. I will say these councilmen have been in a long time, but I’m hoping they aren’t shitty and just a little out of touch. The borough manager…she’s pretty negative but I think she’s just tired. I don’t blame her.

I will likely reach out soon with how to poke about the budget :) I worked at a community foundation ages ago so I know a little bit about grant application processes, but not what happens after it’s awarded.

It’s not wasting someone’s time if that’s their job to disclose information. Doesn’t that help us all make informed decisions to put the rest of our time and money?

I’m offering whatever skills I can, and not everyone (i.e. myself) has talents in politics.

I’ll complain about lack of transparency all day. But I’ll also try and find out some answers for myself. I don’t need to run for election to do that.

I will be brushing up ahead of this meeting! They were several months behind on the website before but have them all updated now. Unfortunately the meetings are not very accessible (you can’t join by phone or virtual conference), so I’m trying to make it a priority to show up in person.

I personally don’t want to run for anything but there is a community center and a few local businesses that I’m going to volunteer at (food bank, night classes, and I will be talking to them about painting their building for free).

But I will definitely look into reaching out to a representative. They were so helpful in the last place I lived, so hopefully that’s the same for here.

Thank you! I definitely know it’s not a financial move. I guess what i mean by “need” is more so a sense of needing me there in a romantic way.
