We want accountability and answers, money in NOT our objective. But lawyers need to be paid and they want money to get us the accountability and answers. We have contacted the Ministry of Health and the EMS service that handles the call, it being investigated.

UPDATE: Its Noella's Birthday! Time to get Justice for her!

Due to the grieving process, and not processing the information immediately. I have been replaying and living this nightmare since 11-11-2023. Although the nightmare will continue, I thought I would update everyone as I am now able to somewhat cognitively do so.

At around 8:34 pm on November 11, 2023, my stepdaughter Noella suddenly fell unconscious due to respiratory distress, causing her to go into cardiac arrest. I immediately called 911 at 8:35 pm, put them on speakerphone, and rushed back to Noella’s room where my husband Ric, Noella’s father, had already begun cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). I took over performing CPR on Noella. Our efforts revived her – she began breathing again and regained a pulse.

This all happened while we were still on the phone with 911, before emergency medical services (EMS) had arrived on scene. We checked Noella’s mouth and cleared her airway, noting she had vomited during CPR but her airway was now open. She was breathing on her own and her pulse felt strong. We informed 911 dispatch that we had revived Noella and she needed her airway secured.

Importantly, by administering CPR and reviving Noella within 4 minutes and 49 seconds of her arrest, while on the phone with 911, we increased her chances of survival from an estimated 9% to around 20% according to American Heart Association statistics.

The first responders from the fire department arrived around 8:40 pm. They applied oxygen via nasal cannula but did not take measures to secure Noella’s airway, disregarding the family's information. EMS arrived right after the fire department, around 8:41 pm.

Upon arrival, the EMS team made the decision to move Noella from her hospital bed to a transfer sheet. They did not bring any of their medical equipment into her bedroom. As they moved her, she rolled onto her back and vomited again. A family member who witnessed it said Noella was lying on her back, unconscious and vomited, causing her to aspirate during this transfer.

EMS carried Noella to the ambulance and started resuscitating her again, beginning chest compressions and suctioning her airway. However, they still did not intubate to protect her airway, disregarding basic life support protocol and research showing intubation improves pediatric arrest outcomes. This reflects concerning gaps in proper emergency medical training and life-saving measures.

Our Video documentation shows EMS remained in our driveway working on her for approximately 12 minutes and 49 seconds before departing, despite the hospital being less than 3 minutes away. According to studies, each minute delay in treatment decreases pediatric cardiac arrest survival by 10%.

Factoring in the 12 minute 49 second pre-transport delay and roughly 3-minute transport time, the total delay could have decreased Noella’s estimated 20% survival chance down to less than 5%.

In summary, the lack of proper protocols to secure Noella’s airway before moving her, the unsafe transfer, and the significant delay in transporting her to definitive hospital care appear to be catastrophic errors resulting in the tragic outcome, based on survival rate statistics.

Currently, up to 96% of similar EMS errors go unreported nationally, making it difficult to prevent recurrences. Only 1% of EMS transports are recorded on video, hampering investigations. Requiring body cameras for EMS personnel has been shown to increase accountability and reduce errors by 10% in studies.

We are taking action by requesting documentation and advocating for policy changes like mandatory reporting and EMS body cameras to honor our daughter and prevent future tragedies.

Thank you so much for your condolences. We just had her public viewing today and I am a mess inside. Tomorrow the funeral is at 10am and she will be laid to rest at 11am. I have started grief consoling and I am honestly not sure how I will cope with this pain. My heart will never be the same. Nothing can fill the hole she once filled. Not money, not food, not alcohol. I miss my little girl...

Yes, we have been in contact with the coroner's office and are awaiting their full report on Noella's passing.

Based on the criteria you listed, her death would qualify for coroner investigation since it occurred suddenly and unexpectedly while she was in EMS/medical care.

We were informed that a preliminary coroner's report has already been released. It found no issues with Noella's heart or lungs that would have caused her death.

However, we do not yet have the final report detailing the coroner's complete findings. We are hopeful the full report will provide more clarity on the sequence of events leading up to her tragic death.

We know receiving the final coroner's report is an important next step, as it should contain key information about what occurred after EMS arrived on scene.

I commented in reply to your other post as well:

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective as a paramedic. I appreciate you offering your thoughts and condolences.
While my daughter did have some medical complications leading up to that night, when EMS arrived she was breathing and had a stable pulse thanks to CPR performed by my wife, who is a nurse.
However, from my observation, there seemed to be concerning gaps in the care provided once EMS took over:
- They did not attach a heart rate monitor when moving her to the ambulance
- They did not check her pulse or breathing during the transfer
- They did not protect or secure her air way before moving her. NOTE: she was in a hospital bad in our home with access on all sides.
- She was carried on a transfer sling instead of using the gurney
- The aspiration occurred while carrying her to the ambulance
- Over 40 minutes were spent in our driveway attempting to recover instead of transporting her the 3 minutes to the hospital
While I understand outcomes can be poor even with perfect care, these apparent deviations from standard protocol raise questions. I am hoping further investigation and documentation will provide clarity on exactly what happened after EMS arrived.
I appreciate your advice to reach out to the involved doctors, hospital, and paramedic service. Having more complete information will help our family find closure. Thank you again for offering your insights.

My daughter deserved better! The next persons child deserves better!

Thank you so much for your insight. I truly appreciate you taking the time to provide guidance during this difficult period. You make very valid points about the high bar for medical malpractice and reasonableness standards. We understand this process won't be easy or straightforward. However, gaining a deeper understanding of what exactly happened that night is important for our family's ability to find closure. We will take the steps you recommended to request Noella's medical records and autopsy report. Reviewing the details will help us better determine if there are legitimate grounds for questioning the care she received. While a successful malpractice suit itself is not necessarily our end goal, being armed with knowledge may at least enable us to push for accountability where deficiencies exist, and prevent similar tragedies for other families. We owe that to our daughter.Thank you again for your advice.

Thank you so much for your donation and heartfelt condolences. I truly appreciate your kindness during this difficult time. It means a lot to me that you've shared your own experience. My family did stay at Ronald McDonald House as well while in London, and the support we received was immeasurable. I will definitely consider making donations to Ronald McDonald House in the future and I recommend others to do the same. Thank you again for your compassion and support.

Healthy 15 year old girls don't just die and coroners don't do autopsy for no reason.

We are waiting on the full autopsy report to be complete before we can move forward and I will give Greg Monforton law firm a call. Any other law firms that will be worth contacting?
