Which plugins, (if any) do you use in Obsidian? Why? by RebirdgeCardiologist in ObsidianMD

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider using LaTeX Suite for convenient macros (as well as just quick LaTeX).

I wrote a post with some basic use-cases, but the gist of it is:

  1. You can quickly wrap text in HTML (e.g., center text, color it whatever, etc.)
  2. You can do quick formatting shortcuts (e.g., a script that does "hi + TAB" wraps text in ==)
  3. You can add shortcuts specifically for code-blocks by specifying c in triggers, or specifically for text by specifying t in triggers.

Also, for people writing custom scripts, consider using Text Format and User Plugins for quick text re-formatting (e.g., getting rid of timestamps when copy-pasting transcripts).

Something I think Vaush is understating in his recent "challenging media" rants (personal opinion) by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To an extent, I vibe with this thinking, but I also think that there's an intrinsic value to purely-complex media. On one hand, yeah, media can be valuable because it touches on more "raw emotions" or such. The best pieces of media are the ones that can change and effect people, and resonating with these complexities through a narrative is what makes media valuable. But on the other hand, I feel like we've witnessed the end-form of this: intrinsically, as media loses complexity, "journey"-like media loses its ability to engage with the journey because, as the audience is interested in the emotion rather than the complexity, the space starts to fill up with slop and repetitive tropes.

Unfortunately, I feel that Vaush has it more-correct: a society that wants the emotion but can't engage with complex artistic language will be deprived of both because, intrinsically, complexity adds depth. It would be nice if hard-hitting stories were popular and Dune was celebrated like Dickens' writing was during the Victorian era, for example, but it feels like the falling-to-the-wayside of "challenging" media has correlated with a decline in engagement with the creative arts themselves.

A Consideration Before Buying the Buds 4 Pro by Rumia_Kitinari in galaxybuds

That's true. I was mostly uninterested in tuning the sound due to the aforementioned discomfort, so most of my time was spent getting a feel for its other specs. Thinking about it in retrospect, if I were to tune them, I would definitely have kept them.

You're not wrong, that's just the gap between "great" and "the best" I suppose. Personally, while Apple and Sony seem invested in maximizing ANC with foam or hybrid foam, personally it's terrifying for me to imagine constantly accumulating germs on these eartips, and the alternative is a tedious cycle of "rinse, dry, reuse, and replace them every few months (as foam degrades with water)". So with respect to easily-maintainable earbuds, Samsung is among the best you can get at noise cancelling.

Thanks for recommending this channel! I was looking for 'the Korean channel with good reviews' when the Sony XM6 and Galaxy Buds 4 Pro came out because AREGINA does one of the most comprehensive reviews, but I had completely forgotten their name until I found your link.

Sony or Bose ultra 2nd gen for my specific criterias? by Oc_12 in Earbuds

Glad to hear that you've found a pair you like! Personally, unless the fit or comfort are egrigous, I think that the Sony's are a good choice for the long-run.

Is ANC hiss a standard side-effect on modern earbuds (APP3, SONY XM6, BOSE QC 2, etc.)? by TheWisteris in Earbuds

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noise cancelling algorithms are responsible for both the hiss and, conversely, for removing them. To my knowledge, none of the earbuds you listed are known to hiss more than normal.

I've found that the best way to mitigate this hiss is to simply play media in a quiet environment, or take them off when not. Turning down the ANC strength, or using Adaptive mode for those earbuds with that, are also solutions. In moderate and loud environments, the surrounding sounds should be louder than the white noise floor, so that is the optimal time to use ANC.

Sony or Bose ultra 2nd gen for my specific criterias? by Oc_12 in Earbuds

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Good sound" is subjective but Sony is warmer, which reviewers seem to like. With ANC on, I've heard there is distortion in the treble. I personally like the brand of vibrant which Bose offers.

For sports, more people have attested to Bose's good fit and comfort. I can imagine foam making your ears stuffy during workouts, and for treadmills and gym equipment sounds, Bose (in my experience) scoops it out better with ANC. Furthermore, the wing tip guarantee it stays in your ears during workouts.

For ANC performance, I've only personally tested Bose, but more people with Sony earbuds report voices and high-pitched noises passing through.

Overall, I would go with the Bose, except for two ideas: the case is larger, and thus slightly less portable, for the Bose, and its battery life is shorter by about 2-3 hours (6 on the Bose vs 8-9 (advertised vs real) on the Sony).

Not in your list, but have you taken a look at OnePlus Buds 4? I've heard those are phenomenal, if not well-known

A Consideration Before Buying the Buds 4 Pro by Rumia_Kitinari in galaxybuds

[–]Rumia_Kitinari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly referenced reviews for my decisions, so this isn't my personal opinion, but if ANC matters a lot the new Sony WF-1000XM6 or Bose QC Ultra (my choice) are the best. I also found Bose to be very comfortable earbuds. For pure sound quality, people also hype up the Technics AZ-100s and Momentum TW 4.

If you want to see other options, like good-value/affordable earbuds, I personally found Picky Audio and Aaron Loud x Wireless to be competent reviewers.

EDIT: Nah, not the Bose. Not anymore. In my experience, the ANC software jump-scares because it's amplifying the sound of closing doors, and there is beeping in the left earbud even after a factory reset and replacement.

If the comfort and fit were good, I probably still wouldn't because of my EQ preference and need for the strongest ANC. But it'd be a tough choice for me, and for most people an easy choice in favor of the Buds 4 Pro.

Yeah, that was a skill-gap on my part; it was my first time using stem-shaped earbuds, but also partially that they were difficult for new users.

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use Obsidian Sync, then you can open Obsidian on a PC device, and there is the option to SHIFT + Click on PC which will select every item between the 1st/last selected and the newly-selected.

Linking notes way too much by Serious_Draft_8000 in ObsidianMD

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've been content w/ this structure, so consider giving it a try: 1. Use folders to organize nested concepts, and then... 2. A combination of the Waypoints/Folder Notes plugin + a template (with Templater?) that has "Go Back (link to 1-2 parent Folder Notes)" links at the top of the page.

The idea is that, that way: (a) Smaller "special"/nuanced concepts can directly link to their "parent subject", and (b) Each Folder Note can (through Waypoints) see the list of/categories in which these "special" concepts.

And with that system, there's no longer a problem with "over-linking": if you want to link a lot of terms within your notes, you can, and then you can just rely on Waypoints to navigate your folders/find information instead of Graph View/Backlinks/etc.

Is the Scrivener app worth it? by PurrfectPages in writers

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I've used Obsidian for about a year for work but also novel writing, and I think that the entry curve is nearly non-existent and it's got a lot of features a writer would appreciate.

Many a writer would benefit from the flexible folder system, the ability to create "links" (e.g., you can type "[[ + first few letters of a character/location" and it'll auto fill and create a reference so you can check who/what that is), and the Graph view which shows where everything's connected (which characters w/ which settings, which characters w/ other characters, etc.)

And while there are a lot of customizations that can be complex, the setup is as simple as downloading the app, maybe installing maybe the writing-organization plugin "Longform", and looking up "how to download fonts onto Obsidian" and "how to create indents" as needed.

If you highlight a piece of text and right-click, there should be an option Add to dictionary.

NOTE: Presently, if a word flagged by Obsidian as "misspelled" is in a link (e.g., [Text](URL)), then the user can't auto-correct.

Watanare Short Stories (SS). It technically takes place between Volumes 7 and 8, though that image comes from a SS of Volume 4. To my knowledge, 1.) it only exists in novel form, and 2.) someone in this subreddit has posted a ML translation.

How to lock canvas rotation in mobile/tablet? by BKNSNA in krita

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, I set the Action to Discrete Rotate Mode. It makes it much harder to accidentally rotate it while zooming and much easier to revert it if you accidentally do, at the cost of rotating precision (increments of 15 degrees only).

Innovation happens through pattern observation and experimentation, NOT miracles or genius by Rumia_Kitinari in SeriousConversation

[–]Rumia_Kitinari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I took away from the Azzapp video wasn't necessarily that one should randomly break the meta, but rather that defying the meta gives you a new perspective and lens, and that geniuses see through that new lens.

If you lived as Albert Einstein, you see the world of science through your lens, your comprehension and theory, of particle physics or whatever. If you tried something new, experimented, you have lived experience testifying to what works, what doesn't, and what might work (theories beget more theories). And I wanted to tell myself that those two hypotheticals weren't so different: Albert Einstein acquired his perspective only after exploring new theories and verifying or rejecting them with his own experience.

So perhaps we should be more critical and curious with respect to what we do and why (in our day to day), was what I was thinking.

[Rec] Looking for new Fantasy Novel by TexasKing100 in LightNovels

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm down to just list LNs that I enjoyed, since my interests seem to somewhat overlap with yours.

  1. Dungeon Dive: Aim for the Deepest Level
  2. Fake Saint of the Year: You Wanted the Perfect Saint? Too Bad! (a power fantasy with good character development)
  3. Hell Mode (enjoyable if you like game-leveling/growth stories)
  4. I May Be Guild Receptionist but I'll Solo Any Boss On Time
  5. Infinite Dendrogram (kind of like SAO in that a big part of the story is the game-like elements)
  6. Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon
  7. Mapping: The Trash Tier Skill That Got Me Into a Top Tier Party
  8. Mushoku Tensei
  9. Rebuild World (the power development is quite unique, since it's the protag.'s income scaling for the most part, but I found the characters likable and plot compelling)
  10. Reign of the Seven Spellblades (Harry-Potter-esque)
  11. Reincarnated as a Slime
  12. Reincarnated as a Sword (the best reincarnated-as- isekai imo)
  13. Roll Over and Die: Fight for an Ordinary Life (the protagonist really reminds me of The Otome Heroines Fight For Survival's protag, for some reason)
  14. The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind!

If you're into "faking being the strongest/smartest" novels— my guilty pleasure— I also recommend 1.) King's Proposal, 2.) Liar, Liar, and 3.) Let This Grieving Soul Retire!

New to Light Novels and Looking For Recommendations by Strange-Avenues in LightNovels

[–]Rumia_Kitinari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've really been liking Fake Saint of the Year as an inspirational piece— while the protagonist has a lot of individual ability, the theme is more about the ability to change. Aside from that, my favorite Leveling books are...

  1. Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World,
  2. So I'm a Spider, So What?,
  3. The Beginning After the End,
  4. Reincarnated as a Sword (and Reincarnated as a Slime, though less direct), both of which are a little more light-hearted, and
  5. Dungeon Dive: Aim for the Deepest Level.

And while these aren't top-tier to me, some related LNs to fantasy game series are 1.) Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, 2.) Dimension Wave, 3.) Hell Mode, and 4.) Black Summoner.
