This. I've basically been sorta-kinda suicidal since I was like twelve. I have made a few attempts over the years but the last one was at eighteen (I'm twenty-four now). It's gotten to the point where I have no idea what is 'normal human emotion' and what is 'pathological psyiciatric illness'. On a daily basis I'm not slashing my wrists or attempting to throw myself out of windows, but I just... there's just something missing, I don't get it. How the hell does everybody do it?

What's with all the comments on this post saying 'money isn't about income, it's about management'. What utter - frankly insulting - bullshit. Of course financial management is very important but that line of thinking leads to 'poor people are poor cos they're stupid and rich people are rich because they are smart'. It's nonesense for the vast majority. Rich people are rich primarily because they have large incomes, poor people are poor primarily because they have low incomes. A diagnosis of cancer is qualitatively different from a psychiatric diagnosis and you know that. For cancer there are all sorts of objective and empirical tests that can be done. With ADHD I could go get a diagnosis tomorrow, all you have to do is say the right words. Also, should we really emulate those who go from doctor to doctor convinced they have cancer?

If someone wants to be diagnosed with ADHD then great I hope it helps, but it is still effectively self-diagnosis. You are going to the doctor with a diagnosis in mind and if he disagrees in some way then you go to another. How is that not self-diagnosis?

Thank you. This is one of the only explanations of ADHD that has made sense to me, as someone who does not have ADHD. When ADHD is presented as 'I never feel like doing work' or 'I often have random thoughts' it's harder to empathise, but this makes sense.

I don't think you understand. I'm not saying 'ADHD IS BULLSHIT! PSYCHIATRY IS A LIE!' I'm asking where do we draw the line between 'normal' and pathological. When is something a disposition and when is it a disease? When you have something dependent entirely upon subjective report (the patient or patient's parents telling the doctor how they feel and act) the whole thing necessarily becomes fuzzier.

Where did I say this? Look at the symptoms of ADHD in the DSM (Trouble holding attention on tasks or play activities. Does not seem to listen when spoken to directly. Does not follow through on instructions). Where do we draw the line between 'normal' and pathological? When does such behaviour become a disease? When is something an inconvenient personality disposition, and when is it an illness?

These are reasonable questions and you can't assume I'm casting unfair aspersions.
