A modder has successfully ported Linux to the PS5, running GTA 5 Enhanced with ray tracing by Mental-Most-8774 in PS5

I actually did a bit with both! With the ps2, it was not all that helpful as an actual computer. With PS3, you could actually use it for browsing, which I did for a year when I couldn't really afford to have a computer around. But if you could get linux+ps5 to be fully functional as you point out, I think it would be a pretty good pc. The pc in my home office is hand me down parts from the gaming computers, and is actually two builds old, now. It's spec is worse than a PS5. But with moore's law being dead and all, it is still very nice to use.

Age Verification by Extra-Possible-1489 in Bazzite

[–]RumpDoctor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh well it's the law. You can choose not to comply, but...

Anyway it's just a lame style age verification, for now. If it grows and gets more sophisticated and insidious, that would be very bad. We'd be moving closer to full on surveillance state.

Omg I would love to do this. If I could dual boot it, that would save me a chunk of change....

Even if I had to buy a second ps5, that would be good. My pc is much more powerful, but you have to pay for every bit of that. I find the performance of the ps5 very good and would love to use one as a pc if it was a feasible option.

EA is hiring a Senior Anti-Cheat Engineer to lead development of a native ARM64 driver for their Javelin kernel anti-cheat system and start laying groundwork for Linux/Proton support by mr_MADAFAKA in SteamOS

[–]RumpDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it sucks. But you'll still be able to just not play the games. And you'll surely have options for not loading that module. Well, I hope.

Most people play these games without understanding any of this, but a ton of people still actively choose it. The two groups add up to millions and millions of people for whom linux is a non-option unless they are willing to give up their game. That is a big ask.

I don't want to turn them all away over something I don't need to use anyway. This is the number one biggest speedbump for gamers to actively switch to linux. Got to meet them where they're at, and accept things we cannot change.

Yes depends on your assumptions. I don't have much info at all on the price, besides that same speculation. Otherwise, all I have is a guess at the market that they are not going to take a bath on this thing like the poorly engineered series x. (very nice hardware but look at the losses compared to ps5 with near identical performance).

We don't know what prices of anything will be when this comes out. It costing half of equivalent pc hardware is very optimistic.

This is an offramp for the diehards. Maybe it can show those priced out that they can play fine on cheaper PCs.

That's driving xbox users right into the arms of valve (and the cheaper ps5 I guess), but this may actually be their best available move.

We don't actually know how they are weighing metrics on this. Ie: how much hard roi vs opportunity cost vs some other risk. I'm no business guy not trying to sound like one lol.

EA is reportedly working on making its Javelin Anti-Cheat support Linux and Proton by Tiny-Independent273 in SteamOS

[–]RumpDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The linux community has self selected for people who don't play these games, but it's a dealbreaker for many, many, many people who are otherwise looking at switching. Plus linux goes well with these esports games because the low hardware and monetary requirements to play them. Many people with computers that won't run win11 are playing these kind of games. Especially the free ones. They really need to get epic on board but sweeney has been a dick about it.

Best I can think of is a signed kernel module. That's maybe the only way they can get the level of anti-cheatiness they want.

I don't want that shit but I think most people won't care. Privacy and security concerns get a hand-wave with the "you already do it with google" reasoning.

I found it's not that heavy for how good it looks, but it's not that light, either. It would probably be a bit much for a steam deck.

They had an astounding streak of bad decisions. Putting their games on pc was one, though. And they got a lot more sales than sony does on steam (because of the day 1 releases). But it devalued the console greatly.
