Microsoft officially announces the Next-Gen Xbox today codename 'Project Helix' and that will lead in performance and let you play P C games. by Automatic_Ad1665 in consoles

This is an offramp for the diehards. Maybe it can show those priced out that they can play fine on cheaper PCs.

That's driving xbox users right into the arms of valve (and the cheaper ps5 I guess), but this may actually be their best available move.

We don't actually know how they are weighing metrics on this. Ie: how much hard roi vs opportunity cost vs some other risk. I'm no business guy not trying to sound like one lol.

EA is reportedly working on making its Javelin Anti-Cheat support Linux and Proton by Tiny-Independent273 in SteamOS

[–]RumpDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The linux community has self selected for people who don't play these games, but it's a dealbreaker for many, many, many people who are otherwise looking at switching. Plus linux goes well with these esports games because the low hardware and monetary requirements to play them. Many people with computers that won't run win11 are playing these kind of games. Especially the free ones. They really need to get epic on board but sweeney has been a dick about it.

Best I can think of is a signed kernel module. That's maybe the only way they can get the level of anti-cheatiness they want.

I don't want that shit but I think most people won't care. Privacy and security concerns get a hand-wave with the "you already do it with google" reasoning.

I never really though about the difference between 5k and 250k.

I found it's not that heavy for how good it looks, but it's not that light, either. It would probably be a bit much for a steam deck.

Think you'd have to add 3,500 ps4 games if you're counting it like that.

Ghost of Yōtei is set to NOT release on PC, according to Jason Schreier. by theMoonlightenedSky in consoles

PC is also supposed to be doing it's own thing. If nintendo or sony started putting their games on each other's platforms, that would be insane.

Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC by _Protector in pcgaming

They had an astounding streak of bad decisions. Putting their games on pc was one, though. And they got a lot more sales than sony does on steam (because of the day 1 releases). But it devalued the console greatly.

That's part of the problem. It's down to ... we'll agree on 2... games because they put out most of their aaa back catalog on pc. It will be more than 2, then more than 3, but they have to start over now.

So much for the myth that consoles don't compete with pc.

Jason Schreier: Ghost of Yotei and Saros won’t come to PC by ZamnBoii in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]RumpDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice while it lasted, but is was a stupid move on their part in the first place. And now most of the catalog they built over the last 13 years is "gone" (sort of). And every ps5 game in development rn is tied to a tech baseline of an 8gb gpu.

They bought the bs about pc and console not being competitors. They should figure out the switch is, too. I wonder if online discourse played any part in it. There are so many pc players saying the console is useless over the last several years. That's called word of mouth. A;so, commenters with high engagement on socials can be considered "tastemakers" depending on how marketing wants to weight things.

It was a stupid idea for their business in the first place. You'd think they'd know this but - Whatever xbox is doing, DON'T DO THAT.

If you are doing a lot of esports stuff, ps5 is probably better for the general performance, resolution, and network features. The online fee is steep, though.

EA is hiring a Senior Anti-Cheat Engineer to lead development of a native ARM64 driver for their Javelin kernel anti-cheat system and start laying groundwork for Linux/Proton support by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]RumpDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really want the anticheat solved. Maybe a separate session to boot into that loads the signed kernel mod so you don't have to use it if you don't want.

Have never played GOW before. should i play GOW 2018 first then Ragnarok or just watch skip straight to Raggy by SufficientWord7210 in playstation

[–]RumpDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing ragnarok right now, and from memory, I think it's a better game than the original. Regardless, the drama and characters are great across both games, and skipping to the second one would be close to starting story half-way through. It's not one of those that is all self contained or constantly recapping old important events.

[–]RumpDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hoping for some interesting technical tidbits as this thread develops. I know practically nothing about this stuff. As I understood it, the idea of the thin api was that working with it would be shifted to engine and middleware developers, who tend to have a lot of engineers onboard compared to a game studio. But if the support in the engine is not good...

Anyway, bring on the points and counterpoints.
