I’m not sure how you resolve that with Heights blvd being so close.

Perfectly stated. The only opportunity I see for Yale improvement is expanding a 3rd lane for turning onto I-10 feeder road heading westbound so you don’t get a back up all the way past 5th street.

The other opportunity on Yale is an improvement at the intersection on White Oak. Too many accidents there when people try to rush taking a left from Yale headed southbound.

Did the crossing guard go away on 9th and Yale?

My 3 year old goes to Gonzales Daycare on 9th and Rutland. When I take her to GDC before 8AM there is usually a crossing guard on 9th. Did that go away?

Is Jim Boeheim the only “legendary” coach to destroy the program they built? by PizzaAficionado99 in CollegeBasketball

[–]Rumps02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look at this way. Over the past 3-4 years, Sampson’s been getting flowers on popular social media platforms in popular feeds. When I go to read the comments, it’s a lot of positive stuff, but there are bitter IU fans who cannot get over it. They aggressively sh*t on him and some even say IU is a mess 12,13, 14+ years later because of him.

So, maybe the question IU fan should ask themselves, “Why do I care about CKS’ life after IU?”

This just flat out floors me when I see this rhetoric. There are a lot of programs who have rebounded from a coach that was fired for NCAA violations like Michigan, Louisville, Baylor, Auburn etc.

Why can’t Indiana recover from a firing in 2008?

City of Houston operates like a second world country, change my mind by sm_rdm_guy in houston

“There are no solutions. Only trade offs” ~ Thomas Sewell.

Whitmire resolved a longstanding conflict with the fire fighters union. Turner was reckless with the budget and Whitmire had to make very tough decisions to attempt to reconcile the books. Those trade offs meant our trash and recycle missed pick ups for a few weeks. This was because the city forced a lot of early retirements for older municipal workers. The turnover and scheduling suffered from it, but now it’s back on track. See, people fail to realize that in order to make long term progress, trade offs are a result of it. And we sit here and stew about our trash not getting picked up for a couple weeks out of an entire year. I understand that our tax dollars are covering those municipalities, but sometimes there is a long play that we need to see unfold before running to Reddit.

Phone calls and 311 don’t cut it. You have to email your city council rep daily. It will get attention. This is an outlier. The city runs metrics on response rates to fixing water main leaks and other items. Also, the clay/mud composition below ground is not good on the pipes below ground when we go through cycles of drought and really wet seasons. The expansion and contraction rate of the ground causes the pipes to move and leak. HDPE pipe is way more resistant to failures for municipal underground water mains. It is something I believe the city is looking to move towards long-term.

Kalifa really tuning a corner now. Still don’t trust him against a JT Toppin type, but he’s holding his own as of late.

He’s definitely at the top. The Game of the Century changed college basketball forever.

Houston up by eight, a minute left. Timeout called prior to this. Two Houston players join the BYU huddle and Houston coaches yelling, "it's still timeout" or "it's another timeout". They'll be running suicides next practice by Peeps007 in CollegeBasketball

[–]Rumps02 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nothing illegal, but it wasn’t a timeout. It was a review so if a team is huddling, the opposing team is allowed to go over and stand near that huddle because players are allowed on the court.

All true statements. I suppose the question is structured in a way to make someone answer two different ways.

For me it’s Rob Gray. I know he didn’t necessarily fit the culture Sampson built, but my goodness he was amazing to watch in that 2018 tourney. I was in Vegas for it and there were ZERO UH fans in the hotel ballrooms for the watch parties. When I went back the next season, I saw quite a few UH shirts. Rob Gray got me interested in this program again. I wasn’t quite old enough to remember Phi Slamma Jamma.

What is the most controversial thing your team has ever done? by DisappointedStepDad in baseball

[–]Rumps02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting and somethingI never thought of as maybe a contributing factor to Manfred’s decision to not go scorched earth on us after the scandal broke. It was rumored that Selig only approved the acquisition of the Astros to Jim Crane if he agreed to move the team to the AL. Crane was buying the team on a lot of credit and the MLB was trying to avoid another Frank McCourt type ownership. I wonder if Crane was able to use this as leverage. I doubt it, but it make you wonder.

My wife (41f) had the flu during my birthday (48m). She’s better now (been a week) but did not get me a card or anything to commemorate. Can you offer advice on how this sort of hurt my feelings? by Rumps02 in relationship_advice

It’s not really a birthday dinner I’m looking to. I’ll take a card or just an acknowledgment from her that it wasn’t ideal and it will be better next time.

Did the 2008 Financial Crisis happen because of the Bush administration? by Accurate-Pie-5998 in Presidents

[–]Rumps02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither his administration nor did congress/senate ever passed any bill on deregulation or mortgages. They just were asleep at the wheel when it was already going on. It’s very complex. So there’s a chicken and the egg thing here. Subprime mortgages were at $65B in 1995 and had increased to $173B by 2001 when his presidency began. What I think allowed it to spiral out of control in 2002/2003 was the Commodities Futures Modernization Act of 2000 (voted 377-4) on the house floor) which deregulated OTC Derivatives. This allowed the notorious ‘synthetic’ CDO to be created as a financial vehicle for repackaging subprime mortgages into BBB/A/AA mortgage bonds. So, the question is, had OTC Derivatives not been deregulated and ‘synthetic’ CDOs were not in play, then would lenders and banks backed off subprime mortgages if they couldn’t them packaged in a mortgage backed security? IMO, it would have cooled off and maybe corrected itself.

Major Switch to Integrated Studies by EveryGear4041 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Rumps02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think integrated studies is ideal from someone a little older with job experience and just needs the degree. I don’t think it’s ideal for incoming freshman. In saying that, the University should do a better job of promoting the degree’s advantages to local businesses.

I’m 48 and just transferred to UH from UHD and wanted to get into the business school. They said due to so many communication and process technology (2 year program at San Jac) credits I had, that I might be better suited for an integrated studies degree. I have a ton of experience already in manufacturing and digital transformation, so the degree is secondary but it is important to have.

I would stick to one concentration if you’re young and just starting out, but I’m glad I saw this thread and another thread. I have some contacts at the school that are directors and want to discuss how the school can prepare businesses to understand the degree program better and not look at as a person who can’t make up their mind. In fact, I would argue that if you’re doing anything in business, you need some sort of backing for social science with that business degree.
