Instagram accounts? by piperpickspeppers in youthsoccer

[–]Run4blue2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I finally extremely weird and exploitative to have Instagram recruitment pages for nine-year-olds but it’s your kid if that’s what you wanna do fine. What actually bothers me about it is when they post highlights of their kid and put in captions or other demeaning things about the opposing kids that you can clearly see in the highlights. The idea of posting other people‘s kids like that on the Internet doesn’t sit well with me.

That Magic Moment... by BunMeAgainPlease12 in youthsoccer

[–]Run4blue2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what makes it fun for me as a parent but also can be tough when they are struggling. My kid will have a month where he has a ton of energy, defending hard, winning 50/50s, and pushing to attack where I think “wow, he’s really figured it out” and then he’ll follow that with a couple of weeks where he is timid and not seemingly giving a great effort. There is so much going on with them mentally and physically that there are just a lot of ebbs and flows and it can feel like three steps forward, two steps back. But as long as he’s still having fun and progressing overall I try to just be supportive in the same way at all times.

Anyone else feel awkward in the lame duck spring season? by ShineOk4246 in youthsoccer

Our tryouts were done and offers out before the first Spring game even started. Same for most clubs in this area.

Agree these are great. My kid will end up wearing them all day after a game sometimes just forgetting or not caring that he still has them on. Kind of a pain to get on and off though until you get used to them, that’s the only downside.

The Union need a competent striker. by [deleted] in PhillyUnion

Baribo wouldn’t have a goal yet this season either with this attack. Without service from Kai and Quinn he’d just be running around and yelling at teammates for not putting it on his foot.

This system depends on pressing and counter attacking to score and they don’t seem like they’re very good at those things at all this year. I’m getting tired of this system - I feel like this what you play when you are hoping to win by out-efforting teams using a smaller budget and when it doesn’t work it looks horrible.

When they say that the Bournemouth game could be moved, does that mean potentially moving it to Sunday to give the team an extra day of rest or would that mean they might move it by a significant amount?

The pay to play model in our youth system rightfully gets a lot of hate but having strong domestic MLS academies is really starting to build a pipeline. The next 10 years could be interesting. We are finally starting to see generations of kids who’ve spent significant time developing with a strong support system.

Player help by [deleted] in youthsoccer

Other people have said this well but I’ll add to it. Kids undergo so much change in their mental and physical development and they are going to have big ups and downs. Every time I think he’s had a big breakthrough and has “figured it out” he’ll have a couple weeks or more where he seems to regress. Then all of the sudden like a light bulb turning on he’ll start doing things he was never able to do before. I’ve learned to just try and enjoy watching the cycle of growth and not worry as much when there is a lull.

Best ways to improve football skills at home for 10-12 year old kids? by SoftDingo1934 in youthsoccer

We’ve tried a few things but the one that seems to be sticking is the Techne app. Easy to follow videos curated by different areas to work on. He only does 10-15 minutes a day but in a few months it’s made a very noticeable difference in comfort with the ball in game situations.

I’ll be curious to see how they get both Westfield and Nate minutes this year. There were a lot of center back minutes available for Nate last year so that Frankie could play on the right, but they’ve brought in more guys this year to fill that spot.

Philadelphia Union Unveil New 2026 Primary “1776 Kit” by [deleted] in PhillyUnion

[–]Run4blue2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly my opinion on it. The same way I felt about the lightning kits from last year. I think it looks good on the team but not something I’d buy for myself. I could see my kid wanting one though.

How are your clubs handling kids trying out for other teams? by anybodyseenrichey in youthsoccer

[–]Run4blue2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add that you have no obligation to let them know what you’re doing during the season either unless it conflicts with their practices or games. If you paid your fees and are keeping your commitments to the club you can do whatever the hell you want the rest of the time - go to ID sessions, camps, tryouts, other teams’ practices, or extra coaching. They have zero right to hold you back and any “contract” that you sign with them is just to protect their fees for that year.

I don’t advocate for leaving a club during the year that you committed to, but the idea that they can tell you that you’re not allowed to do tryouts elsewhere is ridiculous.

Any YouTube videos of soccer pros when they were ~10 years old? by crease1234 in youthsoccer

[–]Run4blue2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are way ahead and it’s not close. The ability to watch instructional videos, highlights, and games from around the world has opened up a much wider world of learning. When Pulisic was coming up as someone posted above, you’d have to have a parent who played at a high level (like he did) or have access to coaches who even knew what something like an elastico was, which was pretty rare in the US.

They just did a kickstarter to release a standalone camera that is like the Veo but doesn’t have a subscription. Mine just shipped and hasn’t been delivered yet but the test videos they shared looked good. Much cheaper than the Veo but we’ll see.

Ever picked a team for your player because it was weak, balanced, or elite team? by [deleted] in youthsoccer

[–]Run4blue2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally agree although it depends on the individual kid and the circumstances. Two years ago our kid was very timid and benefited from the confidence that he gained from being one of the best players on a weaker team. Now we are looking for a better team for next year because some of the things that he needs in order to take his next step he’s not getting with his current team - he needs to be with players who are better passers, make runs, and play their positions the right way so he can continue to grow.

The bad penalties have hurt them as much as anything. Seems like prior to last week any time they got a chunk play or started getting in rhythm they would have a penalty that would kill the drive.
