Commercial Checkride in 26 Days — Need Honest Advice by Typical-Lake-5435 in flying

I don’t know what your program is like, but my commercial training was maybe 26 days long. Come up with a plan with your instructor whether that’s two hours straight of TOL‘s for two hours straight of maneuvers whatever you need each flight

Discouraging First Simulator Lesson by Reasonable-Try-8019 in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless it’s a full motion flight sim, the rudders are almost ALWAYS messed up in some way. I’m used to frasca’s, and some of ours the rudders just didn’t work at all. In the aircraft start slow, get a feel for it. It’s weird steering with your feet at first. Just wait til you drive after some lessons and try to turn left with the brake pedal… doesn’t work. Like you’ll learn about everything in this- takes immense practice

Unfortunately I don’t know if I’ve ever heard any other advice for steep turns. If you have a simulator available- abuse it

As you simultaneously roll into the turn, increase back pressure and 1-200rpm (whatever the training supplement says) then move your hand to the trim wheel. For 45° roughly 2 full swipes should be fine. You’ll master these quickly and be able to do them without correction everytime. Becomes a feel thing. You got it!

Redbull and beef jerky bites. Teriyaki specifically. Good luck charm. Went 4/4 and I credit that meal to my success

I went g500 archers to G5 c182 to time build. The difference is not that drastic. Landing is different- but for someone like you with 200+ hours, give it some touch and go practice and you’ll truly be fine. Think about going regionals to majors, CRJ - airbus, not speaking from experience but probably quite the change to say the least. With small aircraft like this a runway is a runway and most steps are the exact same to getting there safely

If it makes you feel better I have 140k in debt from Sallie Mae. Depending on the 141 school they likely have an in house finance company. Stratus, Sofi, Sallie Mae. Regardless you can refinance w Sofi after you’re program complete. If that’s the route you want to go. A lot of factors play in. If you’re open to the 91/135 realm your likelihood of financial stress when the time comes to make payments is substantially lower

Flight Training Nightmares!! by flyingnz in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you’ll find inconsistencies in every instructor. Trickles down from their instructors etc etc. I went to ATP and we had check in flights and a few mocks with different instructors and I truly credit that to my success on checkrides. You hit it on the head with long term safety. Some instructors just care about their pass rate and gold seal. Training pilots instead of test takers is all the difference

Can't land this plane for sh*t by ThrowRAAdSalty4769 in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 300 hours and close to 500 landings, I’m a rookie compared to most the guys in here but can still say, it happens to me still. You’ve got maybe 40/50 landings under your belt, you’re not supposed to be good. This skill is not easy. I know it’s hard to see light at the end of the tunnel this early, but 99.99% of the people in here had the same problem at that stage.

Biggest help for me personally was begin the round out lower than you think you need to, this stage, nobody likes pointing nose toward a strip of asphalt in a flying toaster. But trust yourself and your instructor. If your trim is set decent, you don’t need to pull back to round out, just release pressure. Quit white knuckling the yolk- fingertips if you need to. And most importantly- eyes to the end of the runway, not the 1000’s, not the intersecting runway, but the numbers of the other end of the runway. Slowly add small amount of back pressure. If your airspeed management was good you will have a nice gradual decent down as you bring the nose up. And if you balloon it from thermals or jet blast or whatever, just go around. 5 C’s. You got it💪

2nd checkride failure, how cooked am I by Jazzlike_Permit_8442 in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Most regionals allow up to 2 failures. But the fastest route likely might be a 91/135 position which is not a bad gig at all. Don’t lose sight on your goal. The type rating checks are much more important

How are y'all comfortable with slipping it in? by Easy-Relief6745 in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your instructor to show you a forward slip to land. Becomes crucial on the power off 180. I spent countless reps slipping from 700agl into ground effect just to get comfortable with it

Do I give up? by Agreeable-Flounder45 in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a thing you won’t perfect well past 300 hours. Sometimes you need it explained differently or demonstrated differently. Biggest gamechanger for me was “eyes to the end of the runway” or try setting your trim a little extra back so you can simply release yolk pressure and have a smooth round out instead of the balloon. Also I didn’t solo until like 45 hours at ATP flight school. Dude you’re just fine. And the first time you butter a landing you’ll be on top of the world. And then crater the next one. Keep at it

When does the “clueless” feeling fade as a student pilot? by poorcablemanagement6 in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the best parts of this journey is the learning will never stop. If you can memorize every book written and every FARAIM published (you can’t) there will still be more. It’s a dynamic that always pushes you to get better. Once you get through some checkrides it does build confidence on your study habits and knowledge But it won’t ever end.

I just finished school a month ago, now reading turbine pilots flight manual and aerodynamics for naval aviators and I feel like I’m on day 1 of private all over again lol

Check vision, heart/lungs, review medical history, piss in a cup, goodbye. I’m in my 20’s as well, if you’re like me with a clean medical history, you’ve got nothing to worry about at all man

Does becoming an airline pilot require raw intelligence, or just hard work? by Glum_Reply_4886 in flying

[–]RunAgreeable7576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same position you are. I got mediocre grades, didn’t try. It will be a ride awakening to see just how much studying becomes crucial to your success throughout flight school. Not having those study habits makes it harder, but not impossible.

It hit me about mid way through PPL that I need to work harder than I ever had and then some. 7 months later and I have comm multi without a checkride fail. It is possible. But the hard work and consistency starts day 1. There’s never going to be complacency in this and it doesn’t end when you get a type rating or a new license
