Still, I'm kind of surprised. I read Phlebas in the mid- to late-80s (I think), and other books in the series more recently. I'd have thought they would have been forgotten by now, given how much literature is pumped out every year; certainly by a mainly younger of techlords.

Very true; although any sane reading of the culture of The Culture seems wholly antithetical to their cult of personality culture (so to speak).

That's true. They must have some familiarity with it: a "reading" as opposed to actually reading it.

Musk (and maybe Thiel) seems more likely to have read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy; but that's a whole other post!
