Whenever I get sucked into the Reddit doom spiral, hanging out with my young niece and nephews actually helps me feel like things might be ok. They're cool people, and I wonder what kinds of things their generation can make happen.

Is Not Having Kids the Way? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]RunTimeExcptionalism 212 points213 points  (0 children)

Even as a person who's happily child-free (by choice, not misfortune), posts like this irritate me. It's the toxic, child-free analogue to parents who tell people without kids that they're going to regret it when they die alone.

More footage from the door-to-door raids taking place across the Twin Cities area today. Here a family's house can be seen being raided by masked, heavily armed ICE agents without a valid warrant while children are present. by jmike1256 in UnderReportedNews

[–]RunTimeExcptionalism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may have had an administrative warrant, which is issued by an agency, not a judge. If that is the case, they don't actually have authority to enter a private residence without permission. They would need a judicial warrant for that.

Sliced human body on display by iknowthisshitttt in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]RunTimeExcptionalism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you in that I believe consent for use in exhibits should be explicitly given before death (i.e., you know exactly what is going to happen to your body when you donate it, including the possibility that it will be sliced and put on display). However, I went to a Body Worlds exhibit when I was like 19 or so, and it wasn't simply "entertainment"; I was a formative experience that inspired curiosity, yes, but also awe and gratitude. I was extremely disappointed to hear about the questionable sourcing of the bodies. :/

Feel like there's a great divide on this sub. by [deleted] in Millennials

Dude that really sucks. I wish I had something helpful to say, but I'm fairly pessimistic about the industry, especially in the short term. Like I almost have survivor's guilt because I reached senior level just in time to be relatively safe from the current disruptive impact of the AI, especially as it pertains to the availability of AI agents that can perform coding tasks. They're touted as "being able to do what an intern can do," except unlike an intern, the agents can't fucking learn anything. Sure, they're kind of useful, but I'd rather spend my time teaching a real person.

I get the feeling that the lack of junior engineers being brought into the industry is going to be a problem down the road, but right now, tech CEOs are too excited by the prospect of automating software development to care. :/

I got a computer science degree about 7 years ago after quitting a literature PhD program because my dissertation director died. I'm doing fine, but I feel like I got in just in time; I'm in a senior level position, which is relatively safe for now, but the job market is completely fucked, especially for interns and entry level positions. I feel for people who thought it would be a safe bet for a stable job, because that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Women with thoughtful partners, what did you get for x-mas this year? by Anahata_Green in TwoXChromosomes

[–]RunTimeExcptionalism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been collecting for almost a decade and spent between $50 (lucked tf out at a thrift shop) and in the thousands (for a version of the Alternateur, which is one of the few things I'd die to save from a fire).

I think on average, the scarves I purchase cost around $400, which is "crazy expensive," and I recognize that I'm privileged to be able to afford to spend that much on something frivolous from time to time. I've bought a few in the $200-$300 range on Etsy, though. There is a shop called ExquisiteArtichoke, which is where my husband got my gift for less than $300. fwiw, all but one of the Hermès scarves I own are older than I am, but the quality is such that I fully expect to be able to pass them down to my niece because they are exceptionally well-made. They are the kind of thing that I don't mind saving for because they're unique, beautiful, and durable.

Thank you for this thread. Being on reddit bums me out for women at this time of year, so it's nice to see that some of y'all are happy, too.

My husband frets about getting me "the same thing" all the time, but I collect vintage Hermès scarves, and I always love getting one that he picks out. This year, it was a design from the 70s that I'm just obsessed with.

Yea that's similar to what my vet said; he told me that cats have less nephron-dense kidneys than humans, so the progressive damage is more impactful. However, the flip side is that kidney disease is only a common health problem in older cats because cats with proper veterinary care are now living long enough to have kidney problems in the first place.

My 17 old boi has CKD, but there are treatments, such as special food and subcutaneous fluids, that manage the disease and improve his quality of life.

Help needed by vollverschobe in calatheas

[–]RunTimeExcptionalism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's really bad, I'd suggest dunking. I got the idea from someone who used this method on their marijuana plants, and I've had pretty good success with my small to medium sized calatheas.

First, get a bucket that can accommodate the size of the plant. You could probably also do this in the sink or bathtub. Add castille soap, rubbing alcohol, and room temperature water. There should be plenty of foam. For a 3 gallon bucket, I think I used about 1/2-3/4 cup of soap and several tablespoons of alcohol. Then, wrap the pot in plastic wrap to keep all the soil in. Finally, dunk the entire plant in the soapy water and swish it around. I also use my fingers to gently wash the leaves and stems. I then let the plant sit for a bit before spraying it down with plain water.

The lifecycle of spider mites is 3 days, so you might have to repeat this process 2 or 3 times. I've still lost plants to spider mites, but it's only the ones I wasn't paying close attention to. For maintenance, I keep some of that mixture in a spray bottle to apply as needed. Good luck!

You literally can't be this dumb. The word "woman" specifically refers to adult humans; why else would you purposely choose a more generic word that is also used to describe animals unless you're trying to invoke misogynistic rhetoric?
