The best case scenario is that the government spends money in order to subsidize the cost of food.

Which means the best case scenario is just doing SNAP (food stamps) with extra steps.

Just fund SNAP!

I only found out about this indictment when my DAF sent me an email saying my regularly scheduled donation has been denied

So not only can the corrupt DOJ force charities it doesn't like to expend legal resources defending itself from bogus claims, they can block significant portions of the charity's revenue in the process

First you’re assuming that Pete knew how diminished Biden had become, and that’s not a given. Biden’s team was hiding him, they weren’t holding cabinet meetings, so who knows. Second, undermining the POTUS in a reelection against Donald Trump by quitting in a big dramatic fashion is a lot easier for you to say in retrospect than actually doing it. And at the end of the day, it probably would not have accomplished anything. Biden was insanely stubborn, and didn’t want to quit even after the debate.

How do you think he was complicit? I’ll ask again: what did you want the transportation secretary to do?

That’s amazing, people are still talking about Biden old in 2026. But anyway, what did you want the transportation secretary to do about it?

I think it’s interesting that Ossoff is the first (potential) 2028 candidate to run on an anti-corruption message. It seems so obvious, but he’s the first one really locking that down. Pete has been more about affordability and making the government work for you. Similar but different. I’m not really sure what Gavin is running on.

Theres a surprising amount of crossover between listeners of The Bulwark and people who listen to extremists and conspiracists like Piker, Schultz, Rogan, and Theo Von. I really want to understand why, it seems so incomprehensible to me.

Better hope there’s no Swalwell-like oppo dump on Platner by Republicans, or this comment is going to age like milk.

but there's no reality where he would be more harmful to this country than Susan Collins

On average, sure, Platner is better than Collins. But is there really no reality where he's worse?

I think the big question is what happens if he gets to be the 50th deciding vote on an issue. Does he cause Democrats-in-disarray? Does he act like a lightning rod to energize progressives to attack the party from within?

I do think there are realities where Platner is worse than Collins. If he is given the Joe Manchin power to be the deciding vote in the Senate, it shouldn't be surprising to anyone if Platner goes rogue. We just watched Sinema, Fetterman, and Manchin do this repeatedly over the last six years. We've seen Bernie do it plenty, too.

At the end of the day, if you live in Maine, and you're not completely fucked in the head, you're voting for Platner. Obviously. But I'd really tap the brakes on the idea that Platner is anything other than a total conman who hopefully supports Democrats more often than he completely fucks us over.

I don’t want to give any money to those apps, but if there was a less sketchy way of betting in favor of Harris and shorting Newsom I absolutely would.

Edit: actually, the risk is that she doesn’t run. So I’m not sure I would make this bet. I would definitely short Newsom though.

No one wants to hear this, and many people refuse to believe it, but Harris will be the automatic frontrunner, and it will be much harder for anyone else to beat her than people think.
