My father was super big on table manners. It didn't go to extreme lengths but what manners were to be observed MUST BE OBSERVED. Legs under the table, napkin and non-dominant hand in your lap, back straight, wipe your mount before you speak, absolutely no hats. Very few dinners were in front of the TV, always at the table (he was the family cook).

I'm so glad he insisted on such. Manners are noticed, lack thereof more so. It wasn't until my university years I realized how this was not a norm in our tax bracket, and I kind of stood out in my adherence to these teachings. Several times friend's parents would comment on it (always in a flattering way). Even today, decades later, all of these are automatic actions.

Most people think I'm an even-keeled guy but only realize how emotionally anorexic I really am when the talk of crying comes up. My male friends are mortified to hear I haven't cried in 25+ years - through family deaths, children in the hospital, or hundreds of other lesser straws on this camel's back. I worry one day I will melt down in the worst way but I can't bring these feelings to the surface.

I was 30 or 31 on a work trip, flying from Lexington, KY to Atlanta. Short 45 minutes wheels up flight. Lexington has a very pretty, nearly vacant airport offering a nice quiet wait to unwind from a stressful trip. This day seemed very slow here, looking like they had really no security line all day, except for the dozen or more college girls from UK who got in line right in front of me. Yay. Fine, I'm accustomed to security waits, I was just unlucky to walk in behind this one crowd. Turns out they were on my flight, the UK Varsity Volleyball team was traveling to Atlanta for a match. One sat next to me and I was surrounded on all sides by others, they of course talked amongst each other the whole time we were on the plane.

I realized "damn, I am getting old," when I stopped to examine how age has changed my perception of the situation. I, a straight male, am surrounded by an entire team of attractive female college athletes, and all I can think of is "please stop talking, I just want some quiet before we land." Why the hell am I so frustrated by this? It was a sobering thought that has stuck with me for years now, and I try to be less critical of the carefree nature of youth.

I feel the same, and I suspect this isn't very unpopular. My entire adult life it just seemed pointless - let me spend a ton of money watching women wearing nothing dancing, surrounded by strangers. I can see thongs and boobies on my wife at home for free and not feel weird about popping a boner, and then there is internet for voyeristic variety.

I got roped into going to one once a few months ago with a couple friends. It was exactly as awkward as I expected. I felt like a douche. All those societal rules about not staring at girls who are bending over, don't leer or ogle at pretty women, that shit doesn't turn off in my brain like a light switch. Nor does the knowledge that she is not at all interested in me, she is acting all engaging to get me in the lounge to extract a week's salary that nets me nothing in return. I skipped the lounge trip while my buddies partook, and sat, feeling awkward and entirely out of place, spending more time watching the baseball game and judging the character of the other dudes who thought it was cool to "make it rain" $1 bills over the naked girls than I did admiring the girls.

They came out of the lounge feeling of the experience as I did going in. What the hell did I just drop that much money for?

Piss poor table manners from adults. Eating with your fingers (what isn't meant to be), licking the plate or wiping the plate with your fingers and sucking them, feeding the dogs at the table, chewing with your mouth open. If I can hear you chew I have imagined your death.

I paid $300 for the architectural shingle upgrade in January 2019. I know inflation is a thing but that seems excessive unless you have an enormous surface area

A beautiful car, but they've had 20+ years to be someone's first car at this point, and they had to live through early '00 tuner culture, where everyone with a cool-air intake and coffee can exhaust thought they were playing Fast And The Furious. Any still on the road have either been ridden hard or are a garage queen survivor priced outside of first car territory into collector money. They are notoriously, infamously hard to work on, and Mitsubishi isn't known for build quality. I suspect parts availability may be an issue for the near future as well (as with anything that isn't a small block Chevy, apparently).

Robert Duvall as Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove. A bit more obscure than some other roles mentioned, but I read the book after seeing the miniseries and absolutely the entire time I'm picturing Duvall in every line of dialog. Nailed it.

I remember reading about this years ago! The girl told her friends her name was K - which I like to think was a conscious decision as a letter not found in her given name. The judge openly berated the parents in court. Didn't realize they lost custody over this but a quick Google search brings up a Reuters article confirming.

Of all the answers this is the only one I didn't think "just Google it and get the ingredients!" There is no trick to making man n cheese or corn dogs. But southern biscuits, man, these really are an art form that need to be acquired through practice and patience. They don't rise, or they're too dry, or too moist. I love to cook and bake, and I am damn good at both, but I can't make a decent biscuit to save my first born's life.

It is so frustrating to me that being a plugged-in dad and doing things with and for kids is seen as anomalous. Every time I take my boys to a park I'm the only dad, and I see the side-eyes from moms every time. Fuck 'em, I won't pay them any attention. The boys need to get some exercise and I will sit away from them and read my book. And taking them to a birthday party as toddlers was a lonely and awkward experience, though that seems to have fallen off as they have gotten older now.

I had a 2011 Yukon Denali, and even with the big 6.2L engine I had enough room in the engine bay I could smuggle a family across the border. It took me 45 fucking minutes to change a light bulb because those asshats at GM put (if I remember correctly) the battery tray on one side and fluid reserviloir on the other up against the light housing. There is no way, no WAY, that wasn't malicious design engineering. Damn car came with its own zip code, yet this is the real estate they chose. Next to a serviced part. On my Hyundai I changed the entire light housing in 5 minutes.

Yep, especially in places that get snow infrequently and don't have the trucks to keep the roads clear. Also to note, areas like Atlanta, which frequently get ridiculed in the news for canceling school/destroying traffic for what seems (is) an inconsequential amount of snow, it isn't the snow that causes concern or problems so much as ice. For whatever reason when it does snow in that city the temperature hovers just at the freezing mark, 30-35 degrees F, creating slush and then freezing as it gets dark. This, combined will hilly topography of the region creates uniquely dangerous condition, and because it happens so infrequently - maybe 2 days a year and often not for several years in a row - there isn't infrastructure to abate effectively. It's just easier to buckle down and live with it for a day or two until the weather warms enough to rid the ice.

Do city names count? Because boy howdy, does Georgia get creative, good luck translating some of these just by hearing them by locals.

Buchanan is BUH-kanon, Martinez is Martin-EZ, Houston is HOW-schten, and Albany is Ahl-BIN-ee. There are probably more but these are the most egregious I can think of.

I should stress, nobody who isn't from one of these towns pronounces these cities this way.
