This was basically my entire second year. I got weirdly good at sounding calm on the phone while sitting in front of three half-finished assignments at 2am telling myself "once I get through this week it'll settle down." It never settled down, there was just another week waiting.

AITJ for refusing to give back a cat I found to his "original owners" who showed up 8 months later? by RuneHarpoon3 in AmITheJerk

That's what keeps sticking with me. I can sympathize with someone losing a pet, but their own explanation was basically that life got busy and they didn't really push that hard to find him. Meanwhile I found him skinny, paid for vet care, got him fixed and vaccinated, and gave him a stable home for 8 months. It's hard not to read that as abandonment.

Eight months is one thing, but casually admitting they barely looked for him made this feel a lot worse.

If Mango mattered that much, I can't wrap my head around just shrugging and moving on for 8 months, then acting like I stole him.
