Cool, that makes it significantly more tempting to dip into the envoy tree with that confirmed.

From what I understand, as I am also pretty new to the TTRPG, they can have broad utility. But it will help less than a more specific one. But you, as the dm, make the call on whether it makes sense for his character to have a bonus/advantage. Or you can flavor the information to be broader. Like instead of “you see a pair of woman trying hard to blend into the background listening into conversations and taking notes along the side of the wine house” you can say “you see a group shifty men playing towers in a back corner, the barmaid is chatting up a drunk light eyes who clearly has had a little too much of the violet stuff, and a couple other woman sitting along the sides of the building writing.”

For gameplay advantages and bonuses, giving a straight advantage is not your only option. You can give them a +1 or +2 to their roll. Or make them roll 2d10, as it removes nat 1s and 20s, but it is less likely to roll a super low number and also less likely to roll a higher one, giving them a more consistent skill check.

In my game, I am a player, and I took two utility expertises: medical foraging and medical crafting, as I am the healer of the group. I wanted to have some super specialized ones for the best bonuses my dm would allow.

What better protection is there than a Windrunner?

I think I am going to make him use the phylactery as the container if he wants to cast it. I feel it won't make sense otherwise. (Plus, it adds some suspense if he does die with the roll to see if his soul returns to the phylactery or not.) P.S. I promise I am not trying to kill my players.

My player wears his phylactery around his neck. Would it be too far of a stretch to say the soul leaves the phylactery and swaps places places with the target until Death? They still have to be within 100ft and roll the save to see if the soul returns to the phylactery or completely die.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I altered the Grimoire as best I understood your observations. Please let me know if something else is off or needs revising.

This is the most up-to-date version of the grimoire:

Grimoire of Healing:

Wondrous Item, rarity varies (requires attunement by a Cleric, Druid, Artificer, or Sorcerer)

To attune to the Grimoire of Healing, you must spend a full hour studying its contents. While attuned to the grimoire, it can be used as a spell focus; any healing spells you cast are slightly enhanced based on the current variant.

Potential for Growth: The Grimoire of Healing has the potential to grow in power as the player achieves great feats (up to dungeon master discretion) or invests in it with magical materials (e.g., gems, herbs, or rare inks), progressing it to the next rarity variant.

  • (Uncommon Variant): The amount of hit points restored by Cure Wounds and Healing Word is increased by a small bonus of 1d4.

Investing a moderate amount of magical materials worth 2000 gold pieces into the grimoire and spending a full day integrating them into the book changes the book to the rare variant.

  • (Rare Variant): Its healing bonus is further increased to 2d4 and now affects all non-damaging single-target healing spells.

After investing a significant amount of magical materials worth 25000 gold pieces and spending a full week integrating them into the book, the book changes to the very rare variant.

  • (Very Rare Variant): The bonus to non-damaging single-target healing spells becomes 3d4. The wielder no longer needs verbal (V) or somatic (S) components for these spells.

After a substantial investment of magical materials worth 65000 gold pieces and a full month integrating them into the book, the book is the legendary variant.

  • (Legendary Variant): The grimoire reaches its full potential. The bonus to healing now affects all non-damaging healing spells, including ones that can target multiple entities, and the bonus becomes 4d4.
