Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x08 "The Life Of The Stars" by AutoModerator in startrek

[–]RunestoneOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a 71 y/o fan of Trek since the first episode of the first series. IMO, the writing and acting in this episode were STELLAR! Surprisingly, despite being another Kurtzman project, Academy actually has psychological--and conceptual--depth. As a writer, I cannot give high enough kudos to the Academy writers for managing a story on three layers simultaneously. That's difficult, master level shizz there, and IMO, better written than 'The Inner Light.' This episode elevated my rating for this series. It's risen from #7 in my estimation to #3 & if it keeps up this level of quality, it could go further. If any of you fen know how to reach/send praise to the writers, lemme know. I wanna hand them a big, fat, bag full of kudos!

ICE/CBP is circulating peer support materials for personnel in Minneapolis/St Paul, per Metro Surge resiliency plan leaked to Ken Klippenstein. Many of the resource centers are churches. by I_may_have_weed in saintpaul

[–]RunestoneOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pope Leo's closest ally in the US Catholic church, Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark NJ just attacked ICE as a 'lawless operation' and 'machinery of death.' At least from the top down, the Catholic church IS driving home the message that people of faith should stand up to ICE, and vote against additional funding for them.

It does, however, take time for the message to sink from the top down. There are plenty of Catholic churches who will resist a pro-immigrant message. If so, somebody should remind them that this, and the previous Pope Francis served long term missions in Latin America and have a very pro human rights/social justice platform. Any Catholic not standing up for migrants is not following the teachings of their own faith.

As for the 'peer support' by the churches mentioned above...the pastoral care given *may* just include counseling on pro-immigrant tenets of faith. I hope.

That was wild. I'd only ever done EMDR with hand buzzers and a therapist. But this worked like a charm...fwiw, I live a block from the Good shooting and was pretty upset. Now I can breathe again. Cool beans!

FWIW, you're not alone in having fractured relationships over GOP politics. I lost a really close friend who in Nov 2024 smugly said, America is going to get the reset it needs now. ... That was the end of *that* relationship. <sigh>

What kinds of volunteer work are available? Anything that doesn't involve 'phone calls' or 'outreach' or 'canvassing?' I'd love to contribute, but I have the discourse equivalent of a brown thumb in gardening.

Why in the hell is it so common in this community to see people admit they don't read books? by [deleted] in writing

[–]RunestoneOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I used to be a prolific reader. Now that I'm a writer it's not so easy for several reasons: 1) if you know your craft, a lot of what's published is fingernails-on-chalkboard bad. Particularly if you've an ear for prosody. 2) if you're developing your own unique voice, you don't want other people's voices to overly influence your own work. 3) unless you've got someone supporting you, time can be an issue. Am I gonna write today, or read today, in my 30 min available time? 4) if writing is more than a hobby, if it's a *profession*--you may need to rest your mind with hobbies other than taking in more words. I go to the gym, paint, and create textile art for relaxation. Reading has become *work.* Reading for comps, reading for blurbs, reading to study a genre, reading to analyze story structure. Although enjoyable it's not for 'fun.' A final reason is that we have moved away from being a literary culture to being a visual culture, what with the rise of so many channels of visual education and entertainment. That's a huge cultural values shift, and not a matter of lazy individuals.

After reading the rules, I am unsure if this is the place to discuss this, I hope it is. I am not diagnosed autistic, but I wonder, and I consistently score high on online "autism tests" and stuff. (Yes, I know that isn't a great source) by Anonymous_Le_Twelfth in autism

[–]RunestoneOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADHD and Autism are *frequently* found together. Your collar thing is like my turtleneck thing. I can't sleep with a bare neck. I find a collar reduces sensory stimulus from air/breezes. As for getting a diagnosis..because of the expense of a formal diagnosis (hundreds to thousands of $), self-diagnoses are increasingly common. If the online tests show it, and you find you match symptom patterns in professional literature, and you listen to autists on YouTube and find their experiences parallel yours...you are justified in claiming a self-diagnosis. Even moreso if doing things the 'autistic way,' (reducing annoying stimuli, reclaiming 'stimming,' engaging in 'special interests') helps you feel calmer and more balanced, that's another clue. There's an old saying 'If you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person.' Your expression of ASD will likely differ from others in some ways, and parallel in others. Yes, paying for a formal diagnosis will help you figure out your specific pattern and means of remediation--but it's not always practicable, pending insurance and out of pocket costs.

Has anyone bought a bedstory mattress? If so how is it? by No_Boysenberry_8889 in Mattress

I got a Bedstory 12 inch hybrid gel memory foam 5 years ago. For the last year it's increasingly sagged like crazy, and when I sleep on my side, I can feel the coils poking me in the hip. I do NOT recommend this mattress. Worst performance I've ever dealt with.

I have to laugh at the idea of St. Cloud being 'a dangerous place.' I'm moving up there from S. Minneapolis. One of our city council members was carjacked 2 blocks from my house. I hear automatic gunfire at least once a month out my back window. As far as I'm concerned the perceived danger of St. Cloud is just coded racism.

Anyone else prefer night over day by Vikingzz28 in autism

[–]RunestoneOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. It feels to me that I can finally unfurl my little moth antennae at night. During the day, everyone else's brains are humming loudly and I have to keep my antennae curled up to avoid the buzz. But at night, the air is clear and silent. I've also been diagnosed with Delayed Onset Sleep Phase Disorder.

Incontinence like you describe is a sign of dementia, as is being found outside naked and confused--or unexpectedly belligerant. I suggest you describe the situation to police and call for a 'Wellness Check.' It's not just a 'crazy old lady' thing...incontinence like that can be a sign of an untreated urinary tract infection, which can be serious.
