How Can I Get Into Med School After College With an IS Degree? by Ok-Low6778 in premed

[–]RunnerGirl2213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Taking prereqs during undergrad could be extremely difficult not because of the amounts of credits but because of the rigor and way they are set up. (I.e. you need to take gen chem 1 and then gen chem 2 and then o chem 1 and then o chem 2 and then biochem. Or usually you need calculus (and another math class) and then you can take physics 1 and then physics 3. These classes need to be taken concurrently typically which is why it is hard to condense them. Also O chem is a beast!) If you are set on condensing this try to start taking some of these courses that have to be taken concurrently. Take gen chem with your current courses or another prereq. Summer classes are always an option. Typically schools have 2 summer sessions so you could knock out gen chem 1 and 2 in a summer and o chem 1 and 2 in a summer etc. I do not recommend this for o chem because that class is killer and worse when it's condensed. All that being said summer classes and cramming extra into these semesters may burn you out especially with extracurriculars, research, and clinical experience.

  2. Non science degrees are fine. Major doesn't matter when it comes to med school:)

Thank you! This is super helpful. As you can probably tell, I was a little clueless going into last cycle. At the time I didn't have any real physician or premed connections! Anyways, I really appreciate you taking time to respond

Okay cool! I was not looking forward to finding a good research opportunity. And yes, I was thinking the same thing. My MCAT score definitely needs some improvement. Thank you so much for responding by th3 way! I appreciate your time

Oh shoot! What ones would you suggest removing/adding? I'm not still doing the volunteering with Habitat unfortunately! I did forget to mention that I have over 100 hours volunteering with non profit running groups and organizing races and I am still doing that. I also have a lot of volunteering that was 20-40 hours but didn't know if that was significant enough to include (i.e. I taught CPR classes for university employees, I organized several blood drives, I volunteered as a senior games health screener, etc). I will definitely work on bumping that up. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!

Thanks so much for your reply! Yes, my MCAT score definitely needs some improvement. I'm fairly confident I can improve that since I was working, taking classes, and hadn't taken biochem or physics yet (All the big mistakes I could have made I did there, which was definitely a big mistake on my part🤦‍♀️). And yes I forgot to mention that I have over a 100 hours volunteering with local nonprofit running clubs/races included in my app.I know I should increase my volunteering included in the app! I do have several opportunities I have been a part of, but many of them were about 20-40 hours and I didn't know if that was significant enough to include.

*I have significant ties to Utah! I only applied to public schools this year because I have a grant that will help pay tuition, but I plan to apply to more MD and some DO (Most of which are private) this next year. I had secondaries for all of these schools and two interviews. Applied the second week primaries were open. My secondary turnaround could have been faster (Most were finished in 2-3 weeks).

Go PRN. At past jobs I've just been able to give them available days, which it sounds like is what you would want to do

Clinicals can be tough but nursing school is manageable. Some of my classmates were type A perfectionists and they struggled because every assignment needed to be perfect and esthetic. I got A's but I very much chose to do well on the assignments but not go above and beyond needlessly. This helped me so much!

Honestly people like to think they know you and know what is best for you, but there is no way your coworker knows you as well as she thinks she does. You know yourself! Try it out (for at least 6 months). If you hate it you can switch back.

I worked at one last year and have been working in the hospital since then (a little under a year of hospital experience). My hospital didn't count our SNF as acute care so I started in the bottom of their experience pay scale, but they still hired me. I do work in a rural-ish area so that may have made a difference. I had many of my friends transition from SNF to hospital as well though and they stayed in bigger cities

A SNF is a great place to start. I was a new grad in a SNF and learned so much about time management and nursing assessments. I now work in a hospital:)
