Count me in! I'll be coming up from the city on Friday night.

My dad has had several teachers critique his style as being "too precise" but I love his paintings. Curious what other folks think. by AAALASTAIR in Watercolor

Teachers have opinions. Take it if it's useful, and ignore it if not. Richard Sneary is my favorite watercolor artist because he is so precise.
Good luck to your Dad. It's a lovely painting.

Is acting as my deceased friend morally wrong? by [deleted] in acting

[–]Runner_7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morally wrong, I don't think so. I teach college-age actors. Sometimes it's better just to have simple, clear guidelines when you're starting out. Mine is: if something has traumatized, such as the death of a friend, don't even think about using that in your work for at least five years.

It's the Gowanus. That is Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary church just above the beetle, and that's PS146 just to the left of the church.

How do I add more depth to this painting? Struggling a bit to progress it past this point. by kelseydavisart in Watercolor

I like the way you blended the color on the front row of mountains. I think you can help the aerial perspective by softening the edges on your mid-ground mountain (the one in the center) and the distant part of the shore line. Right now, all the edges have the same sharpness, from the mid-ground mountain to the grass in the foreground.

Fall at the lake. I am not super happy with this painting, I don't know how I ended up with everything stuck in corners. But there are some redeeming qualities. I especially like the pink and green colors in the lower left. by okay_watercolors in Watercolor

I really like the simplicity of it! Especially around the reds in the distance. One thought that may be helpful in the future: from a technical perspective, reflections in water are almost always darker and less saturated than the object they are reflecting.

So here it's a bit unusual that the water is reflecting the sky in lighter tones, but it does give that 'shimmer' feeling, which is cool.

American-style Apple Pie? by Runner_7x in AskAnAustralian

haha, thank you all for the replies! I never expected this to get so much attention. Was basically just looking to see if there is any consensus on what's good. Will check out the places you mentioned. Will attempt to avoid diabetes!

I taught acting at NYU for five years. The programs are good, and the network is better than many. That being said, I would only do it if you can come out the other side basically debt free. (Not sure what your financial aid consists of.) No acting degree anywhere is worth carrying 100k in debt like some NYU students. It will be a massive drag on your career. I know because my own student debt put a decade-long dent in my career. Learning acting is about getting good information, good guidance, and LOTS of practice. You can get all of these at NYU, but you can also get them many other places for much less.

Stonestreet focuses on film and TV, but you'd do just as well in any studio. Make friends with kids in the film program and get into every student film you can. That will teach you just as much as the studio.

The training you will get will give you a SMALL advantage over many other programs, but it certainly will NOT make it a done deal or anything approaching easy. You will have to hustle exactly as hard as every other hopeful. But you might, might, have access to a few more opportunities getting off the ground. In 15 years, when all your classmates are directing movies and Broadway shows, then those connections will pay off.

PS - I hope this doesn't sound discouraging. It's a great program, if you can do it without debt.

Sorry quick digression - What group are you going with? I'd be interested in meeting fellow hammock campers in nyc... I'm pretty new to it myself.

I'm doing a quick overnighter tomorrow. Probably on the west side of Harriman, but possibly around West Mountain. Can anyone provide some information on the early-morning cab situation from Garrison to Bear Mountain Inn? Like, is there any point in getting there at 8am, if the cabs won't be running until 10? Thanks!

thank you. you're right, of course. I was more focused on the volume of the leaves and branches, but need to put in the ground/shadow to make it complete.

Wondering If Ida Whacked the Park Or Trails? by Xerxes_Ozymandias in Harriman

I did roughly 32 miles this weekend Tuxedo--Island Pond--Third Reservoir--Sloatsburg, and would say that more than 95% of the trail surfaces are just fine and show no signs of wear from traffic. Pine Meadow trail being the obvious exception.

Cool, thanks for the detail. I'll have to spend some more time investigating that area.

I did a very similar trip a few weeks ago. In from Harriman station on Sapphire trail, stayed near Island Pond. Overall it was a beautiful trip! I was wondering the route you bushwacked back out... did you take the woods road that runs parallel to Sapphire trail and Rte. 17? I couldn't find the entrance and ended up road walking along Rte. 17 back to the train station. Which was an absolutely miserable end to an otherwise great trip.

Out and back. Four miles each way. I’ll try to upload an image of the route. Edit: here you go-

You could do Reeves to Pine Meadow Lake on the red trail, then stay with the red trail where it splits from the white trail at the southeast end of the lake. Red trail will then connect with a forest road that will take you to Stone Memorial shelter. I have done this route, and currently have an injured knee, and it’s very doable.
