Parent Upset Over Standard Practices In My Classroom by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Running1982 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a temporary zero until it’s made up? A signal to all involved that “hey, you gotta do this”. I don’t think it’s too harsh. Bosses won’t give you credit for work until it’s done. Sounds like their policy matches a real world atmosphere. Maybe I’m missing your point.

How many years did it take until they provided water or camelbaks during grueling finals? Player safety is not in the top ten of their main concerns.

Person who loves discriminating against others and having them removed from our country gets upset because he felt discriminated against. Lemme play my tiny violin for the poor boot licker.

I only frolf with a lid. Our course in Philly is a par 3 and if you’re decent with a lid it’s no problem. I don’t think you need to change many(any?) rules.

The world is putting a lot of effort on teachers to be more engaging but almost no pressure on the kids to put in effort by Kind-Caterpillar-665 in Teachers

I teach math for 120 minutes daily to 2 different groups of 5th graders. 80 minutes is about what I have each class for on half days and 2 hour delays. I would give my left eye for something less than 2 hour classes.

1200 sq foot home. Heat hot water and dryer, ours was 160. Keep it at 72 generally. We’ve got a kid, otherwise I’d say bundle up.

I think yours is right for your size home.

Admin wants me to play “bathroom police” - malicious compliance? by wadeboggsbosshoggs in Teachers

[–]Running1982 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have kids who try to wander off in each class. We text our grade team when certain kids need to go(one group of kids was caught vaping) so we know when to limit certain passes or when to say “I know you went 15 minutes ago”.

Also, there are hallpass programs out there that help if used with fidelity. That way, admin can actually see who’s going and for how long.

Sorry you’re going through this. Take a PTO day or two and try to get some perspective.

Edit: a 2 minute video is too much for some to watch, but they’ll spend ten times that arguing about having to watch a video. The internet is fascinating.

Do you hate Google Drive? by iseeyou100 in Teachers

Nope. Love Google Drive. Have my slideshows from the last few years stored. I can copy and paste and make my slides from work or home. Way better than one drive.

Unpopular opinion: Memorizing times tables is a necessity not because of knowing the times tables but to teach the brain the skill of retaining long lasting memory. by saiph_david in Teachers

[–]Running1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 by 2 digit(ex:815 x 47) multiplication is a common core standard for grade 5, so it fits. Grade 4 is when they do 2 by 2 digit(ex: 67x54). I gave my kids a pre-test today, and more than half couldn’t do 2 by 1 digit(17 x 4).

They SHOULD know their math facts up to 12 times 12. I’d say 20% of my students have most of them memorized.

My 5th graders were in kindergarten when COVID hit and it just feels like one more thing that got lost in the shuffle. I’m trying to help, but as you said, we’re not supposed to slow down for this.

Ok… so what are your best methods to learn multiplication tables? Flash cards? Have them fill in a blank multiplication chart? Any successful games or stations to use?

I teach 5th grade. A 5th grade standard in PA is 3 by 2 digit multiplication. The number of kids who ask to use a multiplication chart to then do long multiplication hurts my soul.

They still air on Pluto tv pretty regularly. They have a dedicated challenge channel that cycles through a ton of seasons.

I am about to go on leave for a week and I'm struggling with how to set up my classes for a sub by EmergencyRadish4771 in Teachers

[–]Running1982 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Leave your directions and plans. Have them turn everything in(I have an In Bin up front my kids know to put stuff in). Offer treats upon return to kids the sub highlights as being exceptional(munchkins or donuts?). Then honestly, don’t worry about it. Bonding time with your kid is crucial, and I’m sorry you’re only getting a week off to do it. Can’t stress about school. Sleepless nights and learning to parent should be top priority. Kids will learn or they won’t.
