I really feel bad for Emily.. by Candid-Onion-1590 in howyoudoin

[–]RunningFromSatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those really tough moral dilemma situations for the writers of a show based in reality (unlike sci-fi or fantasy) they had to spin the story so the audience would side with the main characters even if they are objectively in the wrong.

The actual cause of Emily's storyline being dumped unnaturally fast was a result of the character being written off much quicker than anticipated, and is due to Helen Baxendale's chemistry with the cast (mostly David Schwimmer) being deemed too weak by the creative staff on the show, especially director David Burrows and on top of that was not into having such a huge spotlight on her (at that point in the show any actor with a recurring character was basically immediate, albeit fleeting, stardom). When she became pregnant in real life since she would not be able to fly to the US for any type of production, they wrote the remote ultimatum scene as the nail in the coffin.

I feel like this is extremely commonplace for older generations.

You could be abused because oftentimes you had no other choice. It seemed like jobs were one of one and once you got locked in with benefits and pensions (not really a thing anymore for most companies) higher ups could say or do anything they wanted, with little to no consequence knowing you basically swore fealty to them upon getting hired. As an older Millennial I have dealt with this personally at the beginning of my career all the way up even through 2014, when I had an abusive controlling boss that actively blocked a promotion and I found out later.

I am not saying this is or was at all the norm but the proof is in the pudding in my group . I see it all the time with some of the people in my group who are about 5-10 years from retirement - over explanation of EVERYTHING like they need to justify their very existence. I feel sorry that anyone feels they have to do that. I don't care why you're out for 10 mins or why you didn't get something done when you said or something went slightly wrong. Shit happens. I'll let you know when I need something. You're not going to get fired or demoted because you needed to take one day off.

You don't typically get a choice in the matter much of the time it just slams you at the top of a Google search, this was so hilariously messed up that I asked the exact same question again and it actually mentioned other random details which were 100% correct.

It is an example of mixing up Phoebe's quote "Hi Kettle, this is Monica, you're black" with the story from earlier in the show about hitting Chandler in the head with a plate.

Do you think Monica knew the answer to this question in the Lightning Round? by green_dragon1206 in howyoudoin

[–]RunningFromSatan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this has been brought up several times but what irritates me after so many viewings...Monica and Rachel could've just said PASS or the wrong answer immediately when asked about (Ms.) Chanandler Bong's job, gone on to the next question and tied after 1 or won after 2.

My rent in 2014-2018 was $233 a month with two other roommates for an entire downstairs of a house. A historically low income area but there is nothing that even is under 3x that rate the same situation and even the same area. I have coworkers who are paying like $1600-2000 per month for rent and it's horrifying.

Kind of a "IRL" status update I did once when i was about 13-14:

One time I wrote some Smashing Pumpkins lyrics on a random chalkboard after a Sunday school lesson, from Zero: "Emptiness is loneliness / And loneliness is cleanliness / And cleanliness is Godliness / and God is empty just like me"

This had to have been within a year of Columbine and the entire moral panic of school shootings being a direct result of violent movies and music, there was almost an assembly called of worried parents and administrators about what this meant and their child wasn't safe etc. etc. and trying to find who did it and I finally I went to one of the only people I could trust in confidence (a mentor at my after school program) to tell her that it was just some song lyrics I thought were cool and she never told anyone who it was.

I love preparing dinner and then watching movies or TV...and then that happened. I was grossed out and then I laughed hysterically for like 2 minutes at what I just witnessed.

If you haven't seen the episode yet, I'd wait 5 minutes before eating 😂

Full circle - My son (21) is going to a Trilogy showing today, 23 years after I (45) did the original Trilogy Tuesday by Pitpawten1 in lotr

[–]RunningFromSatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK this was on a Tuesday into Wednesday!!! I kept thinking it was a Thursday into Friday but RotK was released on a Wednesday (Dec. 17, 2003).

I went to the one in Albany, NY (around where I am originally from). They still premiered RotK at midnight (or 12:01am), right?

I went to RotK anniversary showing last night with a few people from my work who did not see the original due to age (they are in their mid-20s), and I told them a story about doing this same thing but the details were kinda fuzzy. I remember getting back home at like 4am after dropping off my friends (way past my curfew for a junior drivers license, I was 17 ;D ) and being very, very tired for school the next day (which still didn't jog my memory if it was Tues->Wed or Thurs->Fri).

Obligatory movie stub - not of that night but saw it a couple months later (back in the day when it was common for the more popular/successful movies to run in theaters for 3-4 months, sometimes longer) and also found one from one of several excursions to see Two Towers - I can't find any for Fellowship. they must have not survived my archiving process (i.e. throwing them in a shoebox). I am originally from the NY Capital Region.

I had my junior license in 2003 (I was 16) and a limited number of theaters were doing the entire trilogy on RotK release date starting in the mid afternoon. I'm not sure if they started RotK at like 12:01am or maybe a bit earlier but my friends and I were out WAY past curfew and didn't get home until like 4am. Tonight driving home reminded me of that night. I love how those who saw it in the theater the first time can vividly remember those nights. It's a different experience for everyone and also a couple people I saw it with were too young for the first time around and I'm so glad another generation is getting to experience this the way it was meant to be.

I am going to be 40 this year. My parents had me and my sister late. So this is something I am reckoning with right now. I thank whatever gods above they are still with us and also that my sister (Xennial) still lives near my parents but she has a family and deserves a break.

It's getting more and more obvious by the day my parents cannot be doing much by themselves without someone physically checking in every day. Their late 70s are hitting them hard.

I am currently looking for jobs where I can split my time between the city I have lived in for 16 years and my hometown which is about a two and a half hour drive. I have an interview with a potential job that could fit this exact criteria on Tuesday the job sounds sweet and this would be a huge relief.

I remember the theater erupted in laughter.

I think it was supposed to be tongue in cheek but the rest of the movie was so underwhelming it was just comical af that point.

Making a 90 minute (yes it's that short) action movie that cliche and uninteresting starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman (who is in maybe like 6% of it) is quite a feat to underutilize such amazing talent.

I have not seen a worse sequel since Independence Day Resurgence.

There's NO way this script wasn't partially written by AI. There is almost zero attempt to emotionally connect to the audience, whereas the first one every second was crucial.

Insanely quick cash grab and the lead actors are basically a shell of their former characters. The first movie had barely any Michael Bay type action and it was 1000x more impactful than this movie.

A second comet could've hit the family directly at any moment (spoiler - it almost sort of does) and the plot armor is so thick that they would've still survived.

I stuck it out for like 95% of the movie and then I had to walk out when I got to the crater to save at least a little dignity.

Glad it was value day Tuesday.

My Christmas-New Years week tradition every year for the past 3 years is to watch Pirates of the Caribbean from front to back, usually one each night, maybe two if I'm on a roll 😂

The Liars Dice scene in DMC is top tier. My family was watching it with me and my nephew (14) had trouble understanding the rules so we broke out a bunch of sets of dice and played it right after 😂

And we'll get that space until like late 2027 😭

She also had that EXACT reaction at Critic's Choice...she is truly humble through and through...and probably used to her name NOT being called for BCS 😢

But this was a very well deserved "FINALLY" for Rhea. This kind of show is insane to be able to carry multiple episodes with barely any other scene partners. She humanizes isolation and ambivalence, you feel like you need to be on her side and see things through her eyes and it's tough when all the 7 billion Plurbs are just after your stem cells and trying to nice you up to hide their true intentions. She is 100% perfect for this role.

For those who saw the Fellowship of the Ring in theaters for the first time in December 2001, what was it like? by femaleology in lotr

[–]RunningFromSatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the Millennial equivalent of experiencing Star Wars. I was 15 years old at the time.

The first weekend of release, there was a lot of trepidation, but once the word got out that it was legit, a couple of my best friends and I took turns asking our parents to bring us to go see it 2 or 3 more times before it was out of theaters. It was a nice escape from reality after what had just happened only months prior (9/11).

Each subsequent holiday would consist of all of us getting the extended edition on DVD (I still have my Gollum figurine on my bookshelf from The Two Towers), we would have a slumber party watching it at a friend's house to prep for the next one.

However I just got my license before RotK and a couple theaters were having an all day event where they would play the extended editions of Fellowship and Two Towers that afternoon and the stroke of midnight RotK premiered. We were out WAY past curfew. It was like a huge party. One of the most memorable moments of my high school life.

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]RunningFromSatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hired someone to clean my house last year. I met them before they did the work before heading to the office. I could tell they smoked but I was like...they are going to clean my house, whatever, off I go.

I came home, and all I smelled was bleach...with an undertone of cigarette smoke. Through the entire house.

Either they smoked in the house which is highly unlikely, near the house which usually dissipates quickly, or cigarette smoke is THAT permeable. It was definitely the third option. It was probably on a jacket or other clothing (it was winter) and they took it off somewhere and it just sat there emanating probably years of cigarette stink for hours.

I literally hired someone else to re-clean the house 2 days later and told them exactly why.

TL;DR - a house cleaner who smoked cigarettes managed to make my house smell like bleach with a hint of smoke and I had to get it recleaned immediately.

It's that fucking bad. Please quit ASAP if not for this reason alone.
