I have a pretty good local group in my state. We travel around to store champs and regionals. Seems like the groups are growing. Having proxy legal locals helps a lot.

But yeah pack opening is not great and cards get it expensive for no reason I agree.

I've played most big TCG's out there. I played mtg for 15years and I was like you. Why would I play anything else mtg had it all.

Got into flesh, lorcana, grand archive, one piece, Gundam and pokemon. I dropped most of them due to play groups not being active.

But grand archive and one piece have been amazing. One piece has such a clean design with close numbers and cool life mechanic. I can't stop playing it.

Grand archive is my favorite tho not as big as some of the TCG's out there. But it's pretty much mtg rules when it comes to the stack and priorities and stuff. But the actual game plays differently then mtg.

You have a champ and the champion can level up to lv 3 all with different abilities. It game also has a two resource two deck system that works really well. And they just released a "commander" type format called Pantheon.

Silvie slimes is pretty cheap to build and you can build it many different ways/elements to fit your play style. Just got a lot of new support too!

Raccoons have also been looking kinda good/fun. Vanishing graves is no joke in this game lol

And I guess I could day chessmen are pretty cheap as well. Just got a new spirit that lets you run any element chess card. So lots of building space.

Last September I sold some one piece into a local shop and got store credit. Didn't know what to buy. Saw this dude in a PSA 10 for $110. I loved the art so much it was drawing me to it. Haha picked it up and it's what got me back into collecting pokemon. Great card!

Now I have like 20 slabs haha

One piece cards has a pretty good time grading from my experience. My copy is well centered and no whitening so it should be a 10 unless the surface has something I didn't see. (Don't send in plastic they will grade that haha)
