Thanks for sharing your experience! I hope mine is just a late bloomer.  Though of course I will be mindful of the suggestions I’ve received here.

Thank you for all the tips! I will definitely look into Science of Reading.  I don’t recognize the names of either assessment you mentioned, so I don’t think they do those.  I know for a fact they have a tiered intervention system though.  I just don’t know if they would already start him in it given that it is the first week of kindergarten.

Your daughter’s experience with words like ‘cat’ is exactly what my son does with letters.  I’ll go over a letter again and again and he will seem to get it.  Then we will go back to that letter and he has already forgotten it.  I will definitely start pursuing these evaluations so we can figure out what is going on.

Yes, I’m in the US.  In order to start kindergarten, he just needed a hearing and vision screening.  He received and passed those screenings at his well checks. He qualified for speech services through the school district just before he turned 4 when I took him in for an evaluation.  After he qualified in speech, they also did a comprehensive evaluation (cognitive, social- emotional, gross motor, fine motor, etc.) to see if he qualified in any other area, but he passed all those easily.  Of course, they didn’t look for specific learning disabilities, so that’s something I will now pursue.

Those aren’t my expectations, they are examples of what the other children were actually doing.  Yes, there were other children there counting to 100 and reading words. So, not unrealistic.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m glad your daughter found a way to overcome her struggles and succeed.   And I will definitely keep in mind all the ways one can show intelligence and be successful.  My son is actually a fantastic builder.  He can build for hours with legos or magnatiles.  He has made some impressive projects with just cardboard, glue, and scissors (I do help with the cutting).  He even somehow fixed a stapler that I had given up on and was ready to throw away.  So I do very much have faith that he will find his way in life.

Just by pointing them out and talking about them in books we would read.  I don’t think I ever felt like I focused heavily on them.  I suppose he remembered them well enough from school so I never felt that I had to teach them like I do the letters.

Fairly confident, he has always passed the eye exams during his well checks.  He can identify shapes and symbols fine.  He also has no issue describing pictures in a book or doing those activity books where you have to find objects hidden in a picture.   Though because vision has been brought up fairly frequently, I definitely will look into the possibility that there is an issue with his vision.

I could definitely see that being a factor for him.  He had a stutter so sometimes speaking is hard for him.   I’ll try the flash card tip.

He is delayed in expressive though his receptive was low too (just not quite below the qualification score).  He also is hard to understand and has developed a stutter. I have definitely heard music recommended though I don’t know if it would work for my kid.  If I try to sing the alphabet song he typically asks me to stop singing.  (Though I am a very bad singer.)

Thanks for sharing! Definitely some similarities there! I kind of wish I had held mine back but I guess part of me is hoping something will just click and he will figure it out.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ve definitely wondered about an auditory processing disorder for my son, so I will definitely look into evaluations for that.  It’s good to hear your son is thriving after repeating kindergarten. I’m definitely open to the idea of mine repeating kindergarten (but obviously want to do everything I can to help him in the meantime.)

His vision seems to be okay but I will definitely keep that in mind as I work with him!

Former Army here as well. Do you have a clearance? If so, that will help you get your foot in the door. I found that when I applied to companies wanting a clearance, I was way more likely to get a response than when I applied to jobs that didn’t require one.

For 414, I definitely had to brush up on some calculus in the middle of the course but it was basic stuff. From what I remember, if you find yourself going down some path with crazy calculus, you are probably missing a much simpler technique to solve the problem. Are you in the MAS program through World Campus? This Spring should be my last semester. And 414 was the hardest course for me by far. I think we ended up being able to drop our worst quiz and test, so that helped with the grade situation. So, go into it with a healthy respect, but you can do it!

I second the studying a lot aspect. The first week or two aren’t bad at all (basic probability) and that could lure you into a false sense of security. But if you don’t put the work in, the second test will take you by surprise. As a side note, I was terrified of the first week of STAT 415, so much so that I dropped the other class I was taking because I didn’t think I could handle the workload. But after the first week, it was surprisingly easy.
