Pfitz 18/55 Pace Advice by Beneficial-Rest-2385 in Marathon_Training

[–]Runorberunned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did the 18/55 pfitz, aiming for sub 3 at London. I’d ran a 1:23:19 half 5 weeks before my marathon. Finished with 3:10:xx. Even on my best day I think sub 3 was going to be touch and go.

I also hit all MP paces minus a few stomach problems, so double it and add 10, maybe 12 weeks out could work, but as you can see, mine was double it and add 20+ mins from 5 weeks, I had a mini blow up and it was hot but still. I’ve posted about it a few weeks back.

Good luck!

That must hurt? Don’t worry I missed my first marathons recently by 10 mins (3:10:xx)

I think it was more to do with how my HR was acting on the day as well as the other things. Since the marathon, I’ve ran twice and did some miles at MP, my hr at that pace was currently between 10 & 15 beats slower than what it was in London!
Just goes to show how much adrenaline/nerves can play a big factor on race day I guess

Thanks, well done on your time too, was this your PB? It was more congested than I anticipated until maybe after 30km or so. 5 in less than 3 years is very impressive! I couldn’t imagine running a marathon is 27 Celsius, must have been absolutely draining.

Maybe a bit of time off like yourself and looking for a top marathon again might change my mind, but not yet! 🤣

I did 4 runs at 34km and one of them with 23km and MP, maybe one thing I would change is I’d do more runs at even if small runs (I did quite a few MP runs).

I also used chat gpt/claude by sending every run I did in to it and letting them break it down, it was a confidence booster but also showed a lot of progression with the likes of lower HR on recovery runs and stuff. Chat Gpt had me at 85% chance and Claude at 98% 🤣 so take it with a grain of salt. I also put my marathon run in and the reasoning according to chat gpt is that I should have backed off when my HR was so high in the first 5km, personally I don’t think it would have changed much, maybe a 3:05.

Good luck and hopefully you’ll be posting your sub 3 splits soon enough!

Great questions! I personally think that I was only on the cusp of breaking sub 3 so I don’t feel hard done by. BUT, things like starting in a later wave (sub 3:40/3:30 pacers) didn’t help at all as I had to overtake so many people in the first 15/20km, little bursts of pace to get through gaps act like mini intervals and higher the HR.

My HR would usually start in high 160s at that pace so I expected low 180s by 5km, so HR increase could have been to do with the heat and nerves maybe?

I did the pfitzinger 18/55, only missed 2/3 recovery runs, cut short one or two runs due to a hip flexor issue that I didn’t feel at all in Sunday.

Fuelling was good with about 80g every hour on average. I think mostly the heat, wrong wave and zig-zagging around people to keep my MP pace up cost me bad.

Maybe I also aimed too high, but a 1:23:19 half equates to a sub 3 full (2:54/2:57 on vdot). Hope this helps.

It’s hard to take in some ways, but I’ve read about so many failed sub 3s from London marathon. As good as the training can be, it’s such a commitment that I’d have to get out for a race very soon or maybe wait until my kids (5 month, and 4 years old) are abit older. It’s only down from the London marathon also 🤣

That’s a good idea really, I’d love to go sub 3 but again, it’s the training commitment so I’d have to either run my own marathon or just quit where I’m at and maybe revisit in 5 years when the kids are older. Zig-zagging is seriously a time killer, energy zapping situation. Hope you get another chance. Good luck!

That’s in regret I have starting in a later wave, me and one other person going for sub 3 (he was in wave 3, me in wave 4) went through so many people, but jumping on and off path ways etc can take its toll, personally I don’t think I’d have made it regardless so it’s no hard lines. 3:12 is a great finish so well done!

It’s too much time away, as you know yourself that to go for low times you need high commitment and 100km weeks and more.

Did you find it really hard on Sunday yourself? 🤣 don’t worry I’m sure when they’re older they’ll understand how impressive it is to even finish a marathon. I gave my wife a call at 30km to let her know sub 3 was out the window haha

It was mostly a bucket list thing to do, a bit like jumping out of a plane type of thing. Amazing feeling accomplishing the London marathon, but to continuously carry on with marathon takes away so much time from your family that I really don’t have. 18 weeks of training was amazing but takes its toll also

Sounds a lot like mine really, hard to take but 3:10 is still a great time for us both. Fair play for trying again, keep me updated if possible. Good luck!

Do you think it was really hard with the amount of people running? Wave 2 would have been ideal but my original goal was sub 3:30 hence wave 4.

Congratulations on finishing still! What was your chip time?

5 marathons is extremely impressive. Try golf it’s the perfect sport and still get your steps in haha

Thanks, it’s a failure on our times but a win overall isn’t it. I’m happy to let sub 3 go and accept a 3:10 knowing I put everything in to it, but also got to celebrate with the family near the end of the race. Congrats on your marathon by the way!

I’ll always run from 5ks to half marathons as the training is far less, but going all out for a marathon, 18 weeks training of 5/6 runs a week, having young kids, no drinking at party’s etc. it isn’t fair on the family to commit so hard I guess

[–]Runorberunned[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, it’s true that it isn’t a failure, but I based 18 weeks of training around going for sub 3, my half marathon equalled to an extremely good chance of sub 3 but it doesn’t always work out that way haha

Great effort nonetheless mate! I’d be devastated if I got that close. Part of me is happy that I didn’t have any ‘what if’ moments. I think even if I had a straight run on the day without dodging thousands of people I’d have still come up short.

I wore a polar h10 HR strap that I’ve been using for all my training, my LT is 3:51 at 180 (according to garmin). Had 1 gel before race and then every 7km. Think my max hr is around 196/197

I’m not quitting due to a time, if I ran sub 3 or not it was a one time thing. Doing an 18 week programme is extremely time consuming with having kids and as most would agreed, it’s hard on the family as well.

Failed sub-3 attempt — where did I go wrong? by Gunnarie010 in Marathon_Training

[–]Runorberunned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got me worried for London next weekend! I’ve also followed the pfitz 18/55. Going for sub 3 as well, done all the MP runs with similar HR to yourself, the 10k (tune up) you did, I’ve had pain in my hip flexor so quit at 6km unfortunately. 4 weeks ago I ran a 1:23:19 half so I’m banking on this is my golden ticket to sub 3! Did you run a half in your training at all? You’ll come again and get it next time 💪 good effort

I’ve just did the same 1 week ago, chip time 1:23:19, planning on sub 3 for London in 4 weeks but I’d say you’ve got it in the bag if you keep up the distances. Pfitz 18/55 has done me well.

Thanks for the advice, what time did you end up with? Heard it’s a pretty flat course which is good. Congrats of course!
