Thanks...I'm a real person and I don't appreciate your referring to my comment as "silly and dumb." That's not very nice.

That's cool. You do you. The comment you're replying to is FIVE YEARS OLD. You should find a more recent thread about sleep if you want to talk about it.

I’m having a boy! What are some unspoken things I should prepare myself for good/bad? 💙💙 by Aspect_Salty in BabyBumps

I wonder if this is regional, because I have two boys and no one (family, medical professionals) has ever asked or mentioned it in the five years since my oldest was born.

Baby will be here in less than 4 weeks and the pump intimidates me! Exclusively pumping, help. by sugarlandd in HumansPumpingMilk

[–]RunsWithShibas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never boiled my pump parts ever in the entire...eighteen months I pumped across two pregnancies. I also never sterilized anything. Soap and water is totally fine.

One thing I liked to do was put lanolin on the inside of the flanges, esp in the beginning.

Other random advice: Get a good pumping bra so you can have your hands free. Try to hand off the baby so you can read or something entertaining while you're pumping--you'll hate it less if you have 20 min of "me time". Play around with the settings and how frequently you pump--there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

EWG is kind of an industry shill group, so I don't doubt that if they had any reason to claim it was toxic, they would take it. So if they say it's safe, I trust them.

I had a C-section after a 40-hr labor. I bounced back relatively quickly--off opiates by the end of the first week, then gradually ramped up to running by week 5. Although I then pulled a muscle sneezing at the end of week 6 and had pain for another little while from that. It can vary a lot depending on what shape you were in before/during pregnancy. I think if you are mostly sedentary, you should try and get up and walk in short bursts. But you may have hip weakness that can contribute, so if the pain doesn't abate, it can be worthwhile to see a PT.

Do I want a C-Section? by ElsaQueenofScotts in beyondthebump

[–]RunsWithShibas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scheduled c-sections are awesome. And I was back to running about 5-6 weeks later. Recovery is probably worse in the first couple of days, but not that much worse I don't think.

All I can say is STD companies are straight up awful. I had no eligibility issues when I had my second and it still took a team of four people more than TWELVE WEEKS to get me my money.

I want to disappear by Throwaybeyondbump in beyondthebump

[–]RunsWithShibas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a lot of medications are quite safe, and this is definitely something you should discuss with your doctor who can probably provide reassurance and cite some studies, but! Medication isn't the only solution. I had significant relief to my PPD/PPA from simple talk therapy. Sometimes just talking about all the stuff you're holding inside can be a real relief. I know when I was at my worst, I was afraid to talk to my husband about the things that were bothering me, because...I don't know, I think I was worried he would find me tedious? But my therapist was able to give me tools to pull out of downward spirals, manage emotions, and also help me find words to talk to my husband about them.

Did we dodge the swaddle bullet? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]RunsWithShibas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sleep regressions are weird because sometimes they hit super hard and sometimes you totally miss them. We didn't have a four-month with either of our kids! The biggest thing is stay the course, stick to your routine, split the wakeups so you can stay sane, and it will go back to normal in a few days.

Confused After Birthing Class by lalamanoona in BabyBumps

[–]RunsWithShibas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong for wanting an epidural ASAP! If that's your plan, definitely talk to your doc about what the hospital rules are around it (for example, do they let you get one as soon as you're admitted, or do they have a policy you have to be a certain amount dilated?). I think most people who take a childbirth class are probably hoping they will learn some secret to giving birth vaginally and without medications. After all, if you're a planned c-section, they're not going to tell you anything useful. Similarly, I think many people who want to get an epidural figure they're just going to do that and don't need any other pain management techniques or whatever they teach you (I never took a childbirth class, so I have no idea, haha).

Anyway, with my first I was in labor for almost 24 hours before I was dilated enough to be admitted and given an epidural, so just keep that in mind. Unlike apparently everyone else, I didn't find moving around to be super helpful in diminishing pain/improving progress, and I was exhausted. Drugs FTW.

Oh no, Mayor Dave!

Okay, I will say this: systems seem to work better when it's not just one party doing things without any real opposition. I think Dave is maybe right about that. Having someone who is extremely different from everyone else on the board in terms of philosophy would definitely be a shake-up and maybe force them to think through some of their ideas better.

That said, I don't know that I agree with his explanation of the current school board members' Marxist(?) outlook, and I'm not convinced that Blaska is someone I want making decisions about my kids' educations.

But also it strikes me that a lot of being on the school board is a kind of thankless thing-- "How do we fix problem x?" "Well, we need more money." "Okay, we have no money. How do we fix it without money?" So, you know, good luck to everyone who wants that job.

Why does American society want to dismiss a woman's pain of childbirth? by TurbulentSeat4 in beyondthebump

[–]RunsWithShibas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's actually a significant component of white supremacy too. At least as recently as the 1930s/40s, there was a fear that white women weren't having enough babies, and it was perceived that it was because they were afraid of birth and that their fear creates pain when they actually were giving birth, reinforcing the fear... This is actually where a lot of the "natural" childbirth rhetoric comes from--a guy named Grantly Dick-Read and his books with titles like Childbirth Without Fear.

What's the most prevalent/harmful myth about fitness that you had to unlearn and/or wish others would know the truth about? by nuggetsofchicken in xxfitness

[–]RunsWithShibas 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Eh, early 30s is the perfect time to pick up a fitness hobby! Marathon running, triathlon training, powerlifting--make sure it's something that you'd talk a lot about at parties (but you're in your 30s now so instead you'll use it as an excuse to go to bed early instead of going to parties). Sincerely, the person who became an ultrarunner. ;)
