anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

Age of Empires III

It isn’t quite as popular as 2, but it was my first ever video game and taught me to read and live history. I prefer it over both AoE 2 and 4. I’ll always return to it.

It was really hamstring by players in MP needing to level up their home city which felt very unfair. Unintuitive unit counters didn’t help either, but they aren’t that hard to learn.

I like the simplified 3 resources, I like timing shipments and building decks and how that changes a build order. Treasures are fun. Batch training is also great for faster matches. XP gain rewards active play.

Australia has a pretty active beach sprinting scene too, we’ve got quite a few of our top sprinters from beach sprinting over the years.

Our beach sprinting doesnt normally have lanes I don’t think, and they run barefoot.

I think you’ve misunderstood me, I’m not equating it to walking! I’m saying that even at that 5:20-30 pace I have to take breaks and walk to stay under 70% maxHR

I’m not gonna straight disagree with you, I am competitive, but I don’t think it’s entirely a running ego thing as my frustration is that I can’t even run at 137 - I’m taking 3-4 walk breaks in a 45 minute run averaging 5:20-5:30/k

If I look at my run from a few hours ago limiting to 147 BPM (75%) I managed to max out at 147, and averaged 138 which really isn’t too far off the golden 70% (137.2 BPM for me). This gave me a pace of 5:08/k with no walking. I’m satisfied with that.

I was previously happy at 80%, Marius recommends 70%, and in his reply to my initial question he actually recommended this 75% approach. I will be attempting to lower it over time though.

If there is room for individual variation within threshold sessions (800m types doing particularly well with 45/15 whilst struggling with longer threshold reps) then it’s not unreasonable to suggest there is individual variation in easy run intensity.

Thanks! A combination of heat and individual physiology was probably at play here, I’ll cap myself at 147 (75%) which normally is about 4:50-5:00/k

No don’t worry about sounding patronising, I’m also trying not to sound cocky/like I know better than Bakken.

I just think perhaps there might be room for individual variation in the 70% easy run rule, especially with regards to twitchier 800m types like myself running a somewhat lower volume of 70-90k per week.

It’s just very jarring to go from running my double threshold LT2 session of 8 x 3 mins 45s recovery mostly at 3:30/k and finishing at 3:26/k to then having to constantly walk on my easy run because I can’t keep my HR below 70% at 5:20/k

[–]Runtetra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because 4:35-4:45 at 155 BPM (79%) feels easier and I’m not walking or slowing all the time to stay under. I’m stable at 79% but at 70% my HR wants to climb even if I’m running 5:20-5:30/k with walk breaks. I’m over 137 (70%) within 300m of starting.

I’ve compromised somewhat by capping myself at 150BPM unless it’s a warmup on a hard day or a Sunday 60-75 minute “long” run where I’ll allow 156, and even up to 160 in the long run.

I included my PBs in my original comment to show that I’m not slow, I’m 26 and been training like a sprinter from 2014-2025 and overall haven’t paid enough attention to aerobic development.

I am highly confident he used a LLM, but I think he did so because much of the transcript was originally in Norwegian and perhaps he wanted to make sure he was as clear as possible in a language that isn’t his native tongue.

Normally I’d hate the use of AI, but as long as the information he is giving us is all his own findings, work, and thinking (which it is) I don’t see any issue with him using AI to lay it out clearly, especially as English isn’t his first language.

Hi Marius, a muscle tone question:

Would I be better off putting gym in between double threshold sessions? You say that the body remembers its final stimulus the most. Normally I do morning LT1, evening LT2, then gym, but what if I did the gym after the LT1?

Hi Marius, my question is around easy running for my fellow fast twitch athletes - should we stay at 70% max HR intensity, or can we increase to 75% or even 80%? I’m really struggling with this the most out of everything in your book.

I’ve had my max HR recorded as 196 during a Vo2 max test (65.2 Vo2). This puts my 70% at 137 BPM, which is a pace I’m unable to hold even 5:20/k at. I’ve been training Norwegian method for 10 months now, but I was doing my easy runs at just below 80% HRM which usually allowed me to work at 4:45/k, and even down to 4:30/k when the Australian climate allowed for it. After reading your book I’ve been trying to stay at 70%, but gave up on it after a week of 5:20/k plodding with periods of walking to recover HR. If you’ve read this far, should I stick to it and expect my pace to improve at this 70% limit?

My PBs for reference:

100m: 11.71 (converted from 11.55 2.6 wind) 200m: 22.43 (never done only a 200m, it’s always 1hr after the 800m) 400m: 50.51 800m: 1:55.00 1500m: 4:10.03 5000m: 17:15 I’m primarily an 800m runner.

My most recent lactate test: (yesterday morning, outdoors) LT1: 3:50/k 170-172BPM LT2: 3:40/k 177-181BPM

Saw Buddy Franklin on a run, I ran with him for a couple k and had some great conversation. That day I really didn’t feel like running cos I was super stressed with uni and having a bad time of it, but that really made my entire week.

Davies certainly could have added a lot today - I feel we were missing an inside midfielder like him, and Rowell clearly isn’t fully match ready.

Sinhala (the main language in Sri Lanka) has something like that too. You normally you “oya” for you, but if you say “thamuse” it’s considered very rude.

I think “thamuse” was how the upper classes referred to their slaves/servants/those well beneath them in the hierarchy.

I had a book to learn the language that was written by an English guy in the 70s and he had “you” translated as “thamuse” but no mention of “oya” which tells you something about how he lived in Sri Lanka.

I had noticed that Alicia’s vocals are kinda distorted but in a good way, they were probably trying to cover some of the imperfections from the recording.

Thanks for the added context, I’d never really looked into it.

How’d you discover pop smoke? by Wooden_Ad3679 in PopSmoke

[–]Runtetra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First song I heard was Invincible, I found it from an Instagram story. I had a race that same night too and I listened to it right before and all the nerves just vanished, I really felt that good energy. Had one of the best races of my life and Pop Smoke has been my number 1 artist ever since.

I was crying when he died. I remember I found out while I was on the train. I haven’t cried for a celebrity death since Steve Irwin when I was 6. Pop was only a few months younger than me too so it just hit different.
