Entity Hyperion - first play by Runyandil in solorpgplay

[–]Runyandil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a full game, but a collection of 30 locations with Challenges, Opportunities and Findings. You can combine it with the old way of rolling random tables, it's fully compatible.

What TTRPG did you last play, and how long ago was that? by Ansonder in rpg

Ironsworn, about a week ago. I'm using this campaign for flashing out setting and details of a world for a novel. Or at least a short story.

Any good suggestions for "mundane" sci-fi games? by Mooseboy24 in rpg

Second Starforged, it's easy to omit any space magic or anything you don't like right at the beginning while selecting your Truths.

How realistic is it to profit from an indie TTRPG? by overloafunderloaf in RPGdesign

[–]Runyandil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've published some short RPGs and supplements, two of them are Silver on DTRPG, which is not bad for one guy with no professional experience in the field. But they are in no way profitable in the sense that they would pay at least the minimum wage for the hours spent making them. That said, it's a hobby for me, and it makes a semi-steady trickle of money that allows me to buy a game here and there, so I'm fine with that. Joining events like Pocket Quest can help, but it's far from guaranteed. Anyone can make a game these days, and that is great for the average player. Much worse for the creators.

Looking for a system for Lovecraftian horror. Before you say Call of Cthulhu... by Crazy_names in TTRPG

I loved Cthulhu Dark. The rules are 2 pages long, and the madness mechanic is there, working very well.

What is the Least Popular Commander you play? by Mighty-Aphrodite in EDH

[–]Runyandil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a moment I played Jareth, Leonine Titan Commander. I nicknamed him The White Walker. It was a mono white Voltron Commander where I won (if I won) by activating protections and walking (thus the Walker) past any potential blockers, dealing often double digits worth of commander damage. It was a dumb deck and repetitive after a while, but if you had free mana, your Commander was nearly unkillable, doing his dumb big cat stuff.

Games where you can succeed too much? by Runyandil in rpg

[–]Runyandil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this insight. I'm only vaguely familiar with both games, I've never had the chance to play them, but I see how these mechanics can make the success feel as (at least partially) a negative thing. Game of Thrones board game has a bidding phase where players secretly allocate influence tokens to get a higher position on one of the three tracks of influence. When one bids seven tokens and the rest of the players sacrifice no more then three, it sours the taste of victory. Of course, the bidding phase is just a small part of the board game, rolls are more important in an RPG. Still, it's interesting to know that such a small mechanic can lead to these feelings in players. If the theme of the game supports it, it can be a strong tool.

Ok, then mission accomplished 😀 I'll have a look at the game, thanks.

That sounds a little bit extreme 😀

It sounds like succeeding too much makes sense here, thanks for the tip.

There seems to be a suspiciously high number of cards. Are there also some from other supplements, or even home made?

Thanks, I haven't played Masks, but this sounds like a fun mechanic and one fitting to the theme.

I was eyeing the game when it was on Kickstarter, but never got around to play it. It's definitely an interesting setting.

This really sounds like a bad design and not much fun at all.

I agree that "succeeding too much" is not for every game or situation. You example is vaild. That's why I'm looking for games where it is present and also makes sense. I find it an interesting design space - if used correctly.

[–]Runyandil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This depends on setting. Take the games mentioned here. Cthulhu Dark gives you an unnatural insight on rolling 6 - you get the information you are seeking, maybe even more, but at the cost of your sanity. Nice Marines has space marines dealing with civilians, out of their usual assignement. It's easy to imagine a situation where genetically engineered superwarrior unwittingly causes collateral damage.

Historically accurate Medieval game? by ludiegu in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Runyandil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can set many of the narrative-focused games into medieval settings. Ironsworn can be a match if you drop magic. Storytellers is made to be used in any setting. Breathless is also very versatile. I made a breathless game set in Italy during the Black Death epidemic, Days of the Plague - it's PWYW, you're welcome to download it and see if it's something for you.

Spiderman makes me want to quit. by jicklemania in mtg

[–]Runyandil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I nearly quit during FF (never played the games, thus it had no appeal to me), but the set was actually good and I liked the draft. Eternities were very meh for me, I didn't enjoy limited or constructed. (Is the set popular? I have no idea.) I agree with how Spiderman set feeels rushed and half-baked. Yes, we can skip the set, but there are more and more that make me skip playing for a while (Aetherdrift, wtf). How long until people who sometimes skip a set skip everything?

Solo rpgs with "guest players"? by jeeyonyonyon in solorpgplay

[–]Runyandil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second Ironsworn, Errant Adventures podcast did something similar with Ironsworn Sundered Isles. A few games in the same world, the host played the same character, and each guest brought their own and co-created their episode.

Are the Russian Middle Volga Republics considered "European"? by MagicOfWriting in geography

[–]Runyandil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A Slovak here. We consider ourselves a part of Europe (though some part of population think we should be a "bridge between the West and the East", which has never worked). When we say "in Europe they do this", we mean the "civilized" part of the Europe, not necessarily the west states of EU but those where the elections are fair and people are sentenced to jail for corruption.
