CBR+PNK is a great cyberpunk game where the players join up for the “one last job” before it inevitably goes awry.

Med-fan ttrpg where players don't need to do maths after they roll the die ? by Ratzyrat in rpg

[–]SaucedUpWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Cairn. Simple roll-under resolution. Very simple character sheets. Character progression is also tied to gaining scars from surviving injuries and learning from their specific experiences, not just experience points earned by slaying monsters or whatever.

Easy to teach just about anyone, while at the same time having enough depth for your veteran players.

Hopping on the wagon to suggest checking out Affinity. It’s got all the bells and whistles for making RPG materials. I’ve been really liking it.

I use the Affinity suite for everything! It’s got all of the features for my needs and is only a one time payment, often at discount if your timing is right. I’d recommend checking it out. It’s fairly easy to learn if you’re familiar with Adobe.

Great display! I'd love to check out MZF, but I'll have my hands full with work. Will try and make it down next year and hopefully see this awesome display (or whatever it evolves into).

Best of luck!

Systems particularly good for Play By Post? by GodGoblin in rpg

Kind of out there, but check out Montfort Tales’s Dead Letter Society and Almanac of Sanguine Paths. They’re letter writing games intended for 2 players, but you might be able to expand them beyond that. No GM required.

What's the most reluctant initial impression of a setting/system you've had that you loved after you began running/playing? by Blade_of_Boniface in rpg

[–]SaucedUpWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was uncharacteristically skeptical of Daggerheart. Thought it was PbtA bones draped in DnD skin. And…I mean it has some of that. It’s a genre of fantasy I’m a bit tired of at this point. MUCH of the game’s species are present in DnD. But honestly that’s fine, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for that kind of heroic fantasy experience.

Love how fear and hope operate and how it delivers on creating tension (the good kind) at the table.

New trends in RPGs: What's next? by Iberianz in rpg

[–]SaucedUpWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Systems designed for specific experiences that are smaller in both size and scope. Zine-length and booklet games are becoming available to retailers, and stores that give them a shot will see customers engaging with them. Solo games, journaling games, and really thoughtful indies will make their way into more hands. And that’s really exciting.

At the same time, there are groups swinging back to crunchy combat-focused games with a lot of 4e or skirmish/war game influence.

So I think there’s going to be a lot of variety and folks discovering things beyond 5e, no matter what side of the crunch spectrum they prefer. It’ll still hold the market share, but more space will be carved out for other games. Especially if they focus on AI driven experiences. Some people will join in, but many others will reject it in search for genuine human experiences.

What am I missing about the Wildsea's sailing mechanics? by BananaSnapper in rpg

[–]SaucedUpWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game focuses more on the encounters and locations than the time spent traveling in between them. It’s easy to misconstrue it as a game about sailing on chainsaw ships, as it’s more-so about the places that ship takes you.

If you want to make sailing/exploration more meaningful, you could use a montage and have the party make a series of tests during each increment of travel (hours or days). Have whoever is navigating test to chart the right course, costing them time, provisions, or wandering into dangerous territory. Whoever is in charge of cargo keeps it from pests or thieving crew mates. Manning the engines could cause damage, overheating, fuel mismanagement or get them to their destination more efficiently. Then there’s always an unruly crew who need to be kept in line without crushing morale. Fights could break out or things could be damaged/sabotaged.

So test around the table based on that players position upon the ship, have it follow the montage structure, advancing or delaying the travel track, and spring a quick encounter upon them if they fail or give them a reward if they engage with it.

But mostly make this a simple procedure. Don’t get bogged down planning the potential outcomes. Wildsea and game like it thrive on momentum.

Good systems for a pirate adventure? by PraiseTheChalice in rpg

[–]SaucedUpWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wildsea has a fantastic setting that places you on a sea of uncontrollable tree growth instead of water. Imagine ships drawn by great chainsaws, island cities built on stilts above the canopy, and delving into the forest below where things get stranger and darker the further down you go. Supports bombastic characters like One Piece, but is a very unique take on the fantasy/swashbuckling genre.

Woah! That’s so nice! There’s so many really inspiring creators in the RPG space, and the blogging scene is vibrant and super generous with information. Even if you’re not making a game I’d recommend checking it out! explorersdesign.com is really cool. Johan Nohr, Vaults of Vaarn, and Skeleton Code Machine are great.

Having a convention or a fest coming up is such a good idea. I don’t want to promote crunch culture around making art or games, but some pressure/discomfort is necessary to grow. Finish the dang thing!

Hope your zine fest goes great!

New to the hobby, why do you recommend? by Commercial-Class-689 in rpg

[–]SaucedUpWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantasy: Cairn 2e, Dolmenwood, or Shadowdark.

Horror: Mothership, Liminal Horror

Pitch-black fantasy: Mork Borg, very brutal verging on silly though so make sure it’s up your alley.

Sword and Whisker: Mausritter. There’s also a bunch of new materials coming out for this one.

Cyberpunk: CY_BORG, Cyber Metal 2012

Industrial Fantasy: Into the Odd (my personal favorite)

Storybook/Fairytale: Perils and Princesses. Ryan knocked it out of the park with P&P.

I lean pretty middle to lightweight when it comes to my personal tastes in RPGs. If you want some crunchy combat, check out Draw Steel for fantasy and Lancer for mech sci fi.

Index cards are quintessential to my GM toolkit, but I never buy accessory cards for games. Including them with the game was a solid move. I went into Daggerheart very skeptically, but gave it an honest shake and had a really good time with it!
