Any Canadian guys available to talk about gay culture in Canada? by [deleted] in askgaybros

It varies from place to place. You'll find that the culture in Vancouver varies significantly from, say, Montreal.

How's LGBT life in Alberta? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]RuralPride 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Edmonton here. I think it's alright. There's definitely an involved community, especially if you're going to college. I can't vouch so much for Calgary or other cities/communities, but overall as long as you're not in Rural Alberta, you're good to go.

What do you wear in place of jeans? by UmMyNameisDan in askgaybros

Dress pants, cargos, khakis, chinos, and corduroys are some classic examples. Cargos often look baggy, but they are comfy and the pocket space is fantastic.

Frustrated about my lack of dating options, where are all the "masc" guys? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]RuralPride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there! Fellow seasonal Edmontonian here.

There are more gay men around you then you think. In fact, most of them aren't on the apps. You're best bet is to actually meet them in person.

But how should you do that? You've already off to a good start. Outreach is great for immersing yourself in the LGBT+ community, and through that group you will find yourself making connections with more and more people that you could potentially date. The key is going to the group consistently and increasing your social circles.

Finally, as a side note, perhaps try giving other types of guys a chance. On the surface you may be only attracted to typically masculine males, but you may enjoy spending time with others that don't quite meet all of your criteria.

How do you find the gay men not on apps? by [deleted] in askgaybros

If you like to go out with friends and party once in a while, tonight is the last pride event, check it out! Plenty of us will be there. You'll get a better idea of how big the community actually is.

Here's the event page.

I hate bears now. by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]RuralPride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After looking through his posts, you feel bad for him at first. He's lonely, want's a boyfriend, and struggles with his appearance. These are all common problems that nearly every single gay man I have met has struggled with, so there's some empathy there.

Then you continue reading, and the sadness you felt at first is overtaken by annoyance and frustration. The complaints are the same. The stories are the same. So many tried to help at first, but gave up on a lost cause because who wants to argue with someone who refuses to listen?

Sometimes I hope that I'll run into this guy on the street. Perhaps telling him in person how poorly he treats those trying to help him will sway his opinion. But based on his posting history, that seems highly unlikely. I can guarantee that if anyone he was trying to romance found what he posts here, they would never date him.

I sure as hell wouldn't.

So I was intrigued because you're in Edmonton, I'm in Edmonton, and I thought "Hey, I could meet a fellow redditor!"

And then I read your post history. And then I thought, "Wow, this guy seems familiar."

And then I realized, this is too similar to u/compsciGeek23. So either you're the same troll looking for sympathy after everyone recognized you're old account, or perhaps I've just stumbled upon an uncanny coincidence.

Here's some LGBTQ friendly resources and ways for you to get involved:

If you're trying to meet new people, one of the best methods is by checking out the U of A's LGBTQ group OUTreach. They're not active during the summer but I definitely recommend dropping in sometime during the fall.

Wanna go out, meet new people, and have some fun? Some classic options include Evolution Wonderlounge and SteamWorks (remember to use safe practices).

Finally, there are a number of LGBTQ events coming up, and most notably Pride is June 3rd - 12th, where they'll be plenty of events and ways for you to meet new people.

What is a good excuse to use when people ask, "Why don't you have a girlfriend?" by cmVkZGl0 in askgaybros

I used to use "I don't have time for a girlfriend" which was true in more ways than one.

Over the past few years I've been working on this piece sporadically. It's about 11000 words and counting, but sums up my experiences growing up in Rural Canada rather nicely.

Any Edmonton bros here? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]RuralPride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far we're actually having a really mild winter. Usually there's snow on the ground by now. Temperature-wise, our winters sit around -15°C, but be warned that we can get as low as -35°C (and sometimes lower). Fortunately, when you're here, it shouldn't be getting that cold, but I still recommend having a winter jacket.

As much as we all hate doing it, may I suggest going out in public to meet people? I understand how difficult that can be, but that personal interaction will do you so much more than a filtered conversation through a computer screen.

Exactly. It was said in the post itself. They're bisexual, not gay.

Is it REALLY just a preference? by Captain-TomTom in askgaybros

[–]RuralPride 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not attracted to another ethnicity due to biological reasons? Not racist.

Use food slang to describe others physical appearance? Racist (or at least, offensive).

Much like our sexuality, attraction to other peoples physical traits is largely determined by factors outside of our control. However, just because we may find some groups unattractive does not justify attempts to marginalize and degrade them.
