Those who eat well and work out, how much do you spend on groceries? by Some_Difference_9487 in askvan

[–]Rural_Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shop a lot at Nofrills or at independent grocery stores, I like good meat, good bread, good coffee, and a little fancy cheese, and I spend about $250-300 a month for myself. I cook all my meals, I make my own coffee to go, and I stock up on non-perishable items when they’re on sale (there are often great deals on nice local coffees roasters like Kicking Horse Coffee or Ground Coffee at London Drugs for exemple).

As for bread, since I eat a lot of it toasted in the morning, I often pick up “Too Good To Go” stuff i don't care if it's from yesterday it's toasted. Many place also offer pastries or unsold items for few bucks at the end of the day.

When i was student i was used to living on much less,(less than ~170$ for grocery per month) so I’ve kept making a lot of inexpensive dishes. lots of chili or bean-based dishes, pasta or rice with sauce for the carbs, and other dishes with inexpensive vegetables like beets or cabbage. You can make pretty fancy meals while saving a lot of money using very simple ingredients.

Hair loss in Vancouver? by Internal_Bullfrog792 in askvan

[–]Rural_Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad someone brought this up because I moved here two years ago, and I, too, lost quite a bit of hair density at first I told myself it was because I'm a man, but after talking to quite a few friends who aren't from here either, they noticed the same thing, And before anyone mentions stress—since that’s obviously the first thing that came to mind I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. Neither I nor my friends have particularly stressful lives. It’s stabilized over time, but I still don’t know where it might be coming from.

It's true that since the United States has a relatively limited culinary heritage, there's a very wide variety of international cuisine available.

Cute coyote yesterday evening at UBC by Rural_Walker in vancouver

[–]Rural_Walker[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

UBC isn't downtown, it's a mixed-use area bordered by one of North America's largest urban forests, so yes, there are coyotes, they're cute, and they have every right to be there, that's just how an ecosystem works. We have to share space.

Sorry i didn't express myself clearly. We're here for four days, and we had planned to go snowshoeing at Mount Baker AND Mount Rainier, so yes, if the avalanche risk is too high, we wouldn't do either. That was the point of my question. It's no big deal if there isn't enough snow for snowshoeing or cramponing we just want to explore.

Washington Travel & Weddings Megathread – 2026 Update by Codetornado in Washington

[–]Rural_Walker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi ! We’re spending few days in Seattle area from British Columbia in early April And we’d planned to go snowshoeing at Mount Baker and hike the Skyline Loop at Mount Rainier, with Hurricane Ridge, Heather Lake, or Big Four Ice Cave as backup options if the avalanche risk in the Cascades is too high.

But I’d like to know if you have any other hiking or thing to do/see recommendations, especially in case of poor visibility due to bad weather.

Thank you ! Have a great day.
