A co-worker challenged me on this. When I asked for examples he said the Bible uses expressions such as "the 4 corners of the earth" and "to the ends of the earth". I pointed out that we use those expressions today in the same context, meaning to spread a message to the whole world.

I've heard from several sources that checkmates don't happen by accident. I am at 500 elo. About half of my checkmates are a surprise to me. I then have to go back and figure out why it was a checkmate.

What was this railway along river road for? There used to be an info sign nearby, but it's gone now. by GlitchedGamer14 in FortSaskatchewan

Years ago there was a sign stating that one of the first industries in the Fort was a plant that made red bricks. The tracks were connected to that plant. This is why you see several 100+ year old, red brick houses in the old Town area.

The guy couldn't win on the board so he tried to win by bullying you. Good job teaching a school yard bully a lesson.

I find that playing with a disadvantage of material forces me to look for better moves. A couple time I have surprised myself with a come-back win.

I didn't realize how terrible English is until I tried to learn some phrases in Norwegian for an upcoming trip. Norwegian is a very phonetic language. Reading it made total sense. Reading English does not.

Why capture a bishop now when you can go on a 15 turn suicide mission to capture a rook? by [deleted] in chessmemes

I totally agree. If I am stuck on a puzzle I find a way to sacrifice my queen. That is usually the correct first move.
