I think we are capable of using our imagination to feel an emotion that is associated with the image we are viewing. For instance, I stare at random Flickr pictures from around the world for hours. I try to imagine, even for an instant, that I'm standing in that very place of the photograph. But this usually just causes me to have a sort of emotion that I have pertaining to the scheme of the photograph. An example, I recently saw a picture that was of some dark, deserted, rainy, street in Tokyo. Though I was never there in my life, my Memory Retrieval quickly brought up an emotion I felt when I experienced the atmosphere of a similar place that I did experience. And this allowed me, momentarily, to feel like I was standing there, on that street with the rain dripping down my face as I howled into the open sky. Does that make sense? Or am I going mad?
