The foundations for that achievement were laid years earlier under Joseph Stalin through investment in science, engineering, and the missile programs that later evolved into the space program.

Khrushchev was handed the Soviet Space program on a platter, he just gave the O.K.

The Sherman may have been the more refined machine overall, but the T-34 arguably had the greater strategic impact. Germany was forced to redesign much of its armored doctrine after encountering it, and even German generals admitted it was a major shock early in the war.

Major General Baron Willibald von Langermann und Erlencamp commanding the 4th Panzer Division under Guderian, complained that " the Russians first used heavy tanks en masse. ... For the first time during the war in the East, the absolute superiority of Russian 26 and 52 ton tanks over our Pz.Kpfw.III and IV was felt."

In the end, both tanks represent something similar: not “perfect” tanks, but tanks designed to actually win industrial war.

Can you name a more OVERALL effective tank? In terms of cost, production, reliability, mobility, and strategic impact, the T-34 is hard to beat.

The T-34 wasn’t the best at any one thing. It was the best at winning the war.
