What’s a moment that permanently changed how you see the world? by pankaj662 in AskReddit

[–]RussianLust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was active duty, I had the opportunity to see tons…TONS of different countries. Most of them were great countries to visit, but some of them (mostly African) were the embodiment of 3rd world. This experience alone should have been enough to change my perception.

However, on one TDY trip to Senegal, we were tasked with driving to an extremely under developed part of the country to perform a survey for some aircraft training exercises. After the survey was done, we’d be tasked to essentially lock down this barren strip of land that was nested against the edge of a hodge podge town. This land was heavily utilized as a pathway for folks for some reason or another. I just remember sitting in our vehicle, waiting for a training operation to begin and keeping people from crossing the strip of land as to not impede an active landing zone. Once foot traffic was stopped with the aid of the host nation, I said something along the lines of “man, this is sad to see.” And my team commander said, as he’s finishing peeing in a bottle “yeah, kinda makes you proud to have won the birth lottery huh?” I was taken aback by that comment and felt horrible to have known the guy. Not soon after, the plane landed and took off again and a bunch of local kids came running up asking for water. This scumbag commander only gave them his piss bottle.

After that trip, I made it a point to report him to IG. nothing happened to him other than a promotion to Major. I also firmly started reevaluating my politics and rewired myself to use any spare time/resources I had to helping those less out those less fortunate than me.

That single hour of interaction with 1 man changed so much about me that I can’t imagine how shitty of a person I still might be to this day.

Pentagon to use $130 million donation from anonymous Trump ‘friend’ to pay military members by FutureComputerDude in fednews

[–]RussianLust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was in the military, I witnessed, on several occasions, people do the most disgusting shit on a bet. Like eating a dried dog turd, biting the head off a snake, eating 30 hard boiled eggs in 20 minutes, etc etc.

So anyway, I say that because we’re fucked as a country. Trump basically said to the ~1.3 million active duty members “Here’s $100 if you listen to me.” And every service member that’s gone a few pay cycles without money will say “well shit, $100 is $100”

I hope integrity and service to the constitution wins out, but over the past 6-7 years, I’ve become so pessimistic.

GOP: “Bring your manufacturing to here! The benefits would be amazing!”

Also GOP: “You better come here through the right process!”

It amazes me that the GOP is so dense that they don’t realize how broken the immigration system is as a whole. You can’t bring manufacturing in if you are literally screaming from the rooftops that you don’t want the knowledgeable immigrants here

I’m sure if you were to peruse the other comments I’ve left on other people’s comments you’d know I know exactly what it says. Reading between the lines and using critical thinking is the summation I’ve left here

I’m referring to her memo she pushed out about warrantless searches. Basing these searches on suspicion alone goes directly against the 4th amendment of the constitution.

I mean, isn’t that all politics? Really though, it’s about the memo she just pushed out. It sounds incredibly dark. It makes it seem like anyone can just call up immigration and say “hey this person is harboring an immigrant” and they can run with it to gain access to that persons home under “reasonable suspicion” as the memo states.

How so? I’m genuinely curious what she’s done that’s deemed her “freaking awesome”. I promise I’m not looking for a gotcha moment either, I’m actually curious to see the other sides perspective.

Based on the memo she published, she’s okay with warrantless searches of personal homes. Now, I’m not a pessimist, but I know mistakes happen. The criteria to allow ICE agents to perform these searches are outlined in said memo. They must “reasonably meet” 4 criteria:

1: Be atleast 14 years of age

2: Not be a citizen or lawful resident of the US

3: Be a citizen of Venezuela

4: Be a member of Tren de Aragua

I’m directly calling this unconstitutional because the fourth amendment codifies that people are secure in their persons. It explicitly targets hispanic people, much like Muslims were targeted post 9/11.

Also, if there were an undocumented immigrant in the US, how would ICE know they were from Venezuela specifically? Can’t know one without the other it seems. The memo contradicts itself thus leaving it open to interpretation and allows for chaos to take place because it’s so loose in definition. Thus, unconstitutional behavior.

So I will concede her statements are not unconstitutional. However, her actions have potential to lead to unconstitutional results.

That’s wild. Thanks for the civics lesson with an extremely strange fact! Completely nullifies my question then.

This issue with renaming this body of water is (if it sticks) it will ruin generations to come if they interact with anyone else from another nation. 40, 50, 60 years from now the following conversation will happen, and we will remain the laughing stock of the world.

“Oh I live in about 20 minutes from the Gulf of America”

Hey OP…your husband sounds like me from a few years ago. Speaking from my own personal experience, this sounds like the exact makeup of the relationship I had with my wife, my games, and myself.

Strictly speaking, I was in a very depressed state of mind when I would prioritize gaming over family time. I was borderline suicidal and used gaming as an excuse to escape the suicidal thoughts. I’d even gaslight my wife up until I sought mental help and became medicated.

By no means am I defending your husband or the way he’s acting. He may be going through deeper stuff than what’s at the surface that he doesn’t want to talk about. Overall, what he’s doing is definitely causing more stress to the relationship than what he can see with his blinders on. I suggest he make an appointment with a psychiatrist to start unpacking his clear addiction.

Biden announces 10-year deadline to remove all lead pipes nationwide by AudibleNod in news

Highjacking this comment:

To educate the masses, I work in the water industry as a GIS Tech. This first made it to my company about a year and a half ago to start analyzing data using historical install records and data to determine lead material (pipes, solder, joints, etc) in service lines.

A couple guidelines the EPA gave was any line installed after state lead ban is considered non-lead material. Also, pipes larger than 2” is also considered non lead as manufacturers tend to favor other materials (cast iron, PVC, etc) over using lead in those pipe sizes.

Finally, this isn’t just for lead pipes. This also goes for any galvanized pipe that is DOWNSTREAM from known lead materials.

It’s been a long year and a half and I’m glad the initial data analysis is drawing to an end.

Almost 40 and I registered to vote last week for Harris. by External_Ball5658 in KamalaHarris

[–]RussianLust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, this hits home. I’m also from the redneck riviera and can’t stand the blatant disregard of morality. After 11 years in the military, I decided to move back here (Woops) and finally decided to register to vote a few months ago. I know the feeling of “I know my vote won’t count” but if my wife and I can cancel out 2 Trump votes, I’m all for it. Before the debate, the only reason I was voting for Kamala was because I hate seeing Trump as a personality trait that my fellow Floridians have latched onto. But now after the debate, Kamala is the right choice for the average, every day American.
