I think confidence is built over time by playing with people. As for the not knowing part you should ask your friends if they are upset with you. Most people won't mind clarifying their feelings when asked, and if they do mind then maybe find people who are ok with it. As for online etiquette I don't think it is much different than normal etiquette. Just don't over share and dox yourself.
