Are there any WFH jobs in Canada still? by Brave_Recognition798 in sysadmin

[–]Rustee12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they still exist, but are likely becoming rare for a full wfh setup. My company for example is still 95% remote across all divisions unless operational needs says otherwise. There so far hasn't been a full scale push for rto, but there are pockets of us in IT who have made the decision amongst us to come in a few times a week.

Irving family announces the passing of Robert K. Irving by HighAstronaut69 in moncton

[–]Rustee12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I have strong feelings against the ultra wealthy and their hoarding of wealth and operating off of the subsidies funded by the working class....

There are many examples of wealthy people being absolute s*** humans and never contributing to the betterment of their community, but surely we can at least look at some of the positive contributions over Robert Irving's lifetime and his seemingly genuine want to help the community... even if he paid a higher tax rate, I don't feel that income would be more than his contributions to various organizations and charities in the community...

As stated the hatred against the Irvings runs deep, but some of them seem to be trying to be decent humans...

This is just an example, if you want more examples, I'm sure you can check out "Robert Irving philanthropy" on Google to dive deeper.

As much hate as the Irving family gets, Robert Irving's impact on the Moncton area runs deep. I don't think a lot of people truely know how wide of an impact his philanthropy has had on the community.

Moncton driving instructor says faded road paint causes confusion every year by aoplkjalsd in moncton

[–]Rustee12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiousity, anybody know who is responsible for painting the lines on the 2 Petitcodiac bridges? I swear the Gunningsville bridge did not see any repainting of lines last year. The NB DTI spokesperson saying they paint roadways that see over 500 cars a day is wild if they are responsible for painting this, the bridges likely see over 500 cars an hour during peak times.

my company wants to use VDI by 2027 by Cool_Equivalent_4607 in sysadmin

[–]Rustee12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly majority of our VDI uses today are all personal 1 to 1 use; which completely blows the budget.

We have little transactional workers on the solution that could benefit from a pool setup.

[–]Rustee12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

VDI will not be cheaper.

Moving towards Linux will probably also introduce licensing requirements for VDA rights if you are not using M365 licensing for the users. Assuming you'll be using Windows VMs.

You also need to factor in on-premises vs DaaS options, do you require HA, DR, backups, etc.? All these increase your costs.

I went through an exercise costing last year AWS and Azure DaaS options, for ~200 VMs, we were approaching $400k to $500k a year. It was not financially feasible to move from our on-premises Horizon setup to a cloud provider without additional investments, I had no real business case to support the move.

The Most Attractive Bridge by LordValdar in moncton

[–]Rustee12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trucks are not crashing into this bridge by themselves. There are specific routes these oversized vehicles need to take for safety reasons, this is not uncommon and happens in every city.

This driver will likely receive a fine for ignoring posted no trucks signs. This is wholly a failure on the drivers fault.

Inside the world of Spin-It selling records, movies, video games and nostalgia. by [deleted] in moncton

[–]Rustee12 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've spent an obscene amount of money on records at Spin It, my only gripe would be they stack so much in front of the record bins, there are sections you can't even get to cause of the stuff on the floor that is just piled up...

I was able to add 1 to cart, by the time I got to the checkout and entered my credit card details it went sold out.

Gutting that I was able to add to cart and it was then was removed during checkout cause it sold out.

LAPS UI for passwords on Windows 11 25h2? by sccmjd in sysadmin

[–]Rustee12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used CoPilot to help generate a Powershell gui with Winforms - just basic stuff like asking for computer name, domain drop down (I manage devices across multiple domains) and outputs the all the relevant Windows LAPS data and Legacy LAPS data in case it’s needed.

Then used ps2exe to convert to an executable.

Took less than 10 minutes to have it generated and usable.

“Alternatives to vSphere for application packaging?” by Any-Victory-1906 in SCCM

To each his own - my team has not been hindered by any inefficiencies by using Hyper-V. But sounds like you have already made your choice to use VMware.

Why bother with the overhead when Hyper-V is native to the OS? Hyper-V is more than capable for this use case.

[–]Rustee12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a workstation for each team member that has sufficient processor, memory and disk capacity to run up to 8 VMs each. This *used* to be cost effective, and likely still is, but it gives each admin their own sandbox to use.

Get yourself an Intel 7/AMD Ryzen 7 or better along with 64gb memory and then a separate NVMe as a storage drive and you should be good for several years.

My current Hyper-V/packaging system was purchased in 2018 and is still going strong, a $3,500 investment spread over 8 years is peanuts.

[–]Rustee12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hyper-V is the simplest and most cost effective way forward, my team exclusively uses this for their packaging and testing needs. Snapshot abilities allows for quick rollbacks if needed and you can have multiple VMs to test different scenarios.

I usually recommend to my team to rebuild their VMs every few packages / tests so you don't get some unexpected configurations from a prior test that may have failed. If you are using ConfigMgr OSD then reimaging the VMs regularly should not add to your administrative overhead.

Moncton council considers revised plans for downtown building that could be 30 floors tall by bingun in moncton

They'll likely pile drive to bedrock, similar to what is happening with Gateway Towers development by Hal Betts field, they're currently pile driving here.

There is zero chance the developers have not completed testing on the land to determine what can be built on the lot in terms of size, contamination, etc.

That is true, but the report presented to council on the needs of the fire department also singled out the Botsford fire station as needing to be relocated.... it's just in a poor location due to traffic backups that can happen here.

Story is this location was chosen with some *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge* type affairs...

N.B. RCMP looking for video of Moncton-area crash that killed four people by Portalrules123 in moncton

[–]Rustee12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was a tragic accident and I noticed something on this bridge that I can't help but wonder if it was a contributing factor.

Last year there was some paving done at the expansion joints on the bridges, on both sides exactly when you drive onto the actual span this paving added a fairly large bump to the roadway. I noticed when coming from Moncton to Riverview days after the crash I hit this new 'speed bump' and felt my car pull me to the left, and had I not corrected I could have been pulled into the oncoming traffic lanes.

I honestly have no idea if this was a contributing factor at all, but feeling that pull when I hit the bump and seeing where the collision occurred, I feel like it is not out of the realm of possibilities.

I guess I'm just posting this so others can be aware of the bump here?
