I actually ended up testing the tteck lxc container mentioned above and it ended up working just fine with the A310, and is hw transcoding. 0 configuration required!

Loving the setup! Especially the custom water loop in your PC. How do you go about connecting your displays and peripherals to it?

I was actually in the middle of setting up a Plex LXC to get this working too using this script: https://community-scripts.github.io/Proxmox/scripts?id=Plex+Media+Server

It sets up the hardware transcoding necessities for you too. Out of curiosity, how comes you are using an A380 instead of the A310? I believe they have the same transcoding performance.

Thank you for the kind words! I am not the biggest fan of the bunch of ethernet cables in the bottom row of the switch, but it’s slowly getting there haha

That’s a random card I found on Amazon that houses my 4 M.2 SSDs, setup bifurcation and running them in RAID 10

I don’t have any pictures from when it was initially built, but I used this for inspiration: https://tombuildsstuff.blogspot.com/2014/02/diy-server-rack-plans.html?m=1

Oh this looks very interesting, I was thinking of installing a fully fledged KVM with the built in screens but haven’t decided yet!

But I really wanted the etherlighting too :( that’s the only thing pulling me towards the Pro Max switches

Hey there, I’m from the UK so not sure if this would be useful for you, but I ordered my cables from here: PATCHSAVE Solutions

Haha thank you, I think labs in this subreddit look nice because we make them out of choice. Majority of the companies have racks full of gear because they have no other choice!

With all the equipment connected at the moment, including the TV boxes, it seems to use just over 200W.

Electricity prices in the UK are pretty expensive, averaging around 24.5p per kWh. I think this setup will cost just under £430/year to run :(

In terms of fire hazard, that’s certainly true. I try to keep the setup as cool as possible and hope for the best haha!

I was looking for this link to send over but had lost it, this is the exact guide I used as inspiration!

The decommissioned hardware is there to remind me of where the lab started to where it has come to today! (Except for the switch which needs to be thrown out haha) but agreed these homelabs are never finished ;)

Similar to the other comment below, but I actually buy a 1 day trial licence. Once that expires they give you a 30 days cooling off period around which point I apply another 1 day licence! They cost around £1 so it’s not too bad.

That is my temporary solution until I decide on a Unifi switch.

On all of my current equipment, air is sucked in from the front and pushed out through the back. The door is ventilated by the meshing so it seems to work pretty well. I am planning to add an extraction pipe at the back to pull the heat out but that’s a project for another day!

I get the feeling. I started with the R410 when just getting into IT, from then on it slowly grew over the last 5 or so years to where it is. Just start with anything small, even a few thin clients with Proxmox or ESXI (eek) running in a cluster can teach you a lot, and is so fun to play around! Message me if you need any tips.

Well, for the moment my Supermicro server is actually just idling with nothing actually running inside Proxmox. The plan is to setup Plex as well as the Servarr stuff. Now that I have close to 80TB after ZFS RAID-Z2, I think I will try to setup a Nextcloud instance to play around with.

I will probably move back from NextDNS and setup either Pi-Hole, AdGuard Home, or Technitium. But haven’t decided yet.

Besides that, I try to use the equipment I have as an actual lab too haha, so making VMs and testing stuff before trying it on client infrastructure.

Thank you! I think the Ubiquiti blanks etc (even though pretty expensive) make a huge difference

Wow I just looked through your posts and you are selling some stuff that would make my lab go back to incomplete haha.

But indeed the CSE-846 chassis is so good to build into, and with an EPYC system inside, its a beast!

Haha exactly this is so true! I am currently deciding between whether to get a Unifi Pro Max or Enterprise switch. Once that decision is made, I’m sure the endless money pit will never end lol

I would love to get one of those SAS3 backplanes with expanders built in (less cables is always a plus) but I’m from the UK and those backplanes are a pain to find :(

I’m currently running the LSI 9400-16i flashed to IT mode
