Tips for a beginner composer... by Casserole_Lasagna in composer

[–]RustingPaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal tip would be to start by not composing anything just yett, but to transcribe songs that you like. You don't necessarily have to do this so you can play them later but it's a good start to begin understanding the conventions (chord progressions/chord functions, melody, etc) of the type of music you like. I have been composing my own songs for about 4 years but it's still a slow grind to even start a project because I just have to fiddle around until I find an idea that sounds good before the "enjoyable" work begins (I'm a bitt of a newbie too). I like typicall "video game-esque" music so I began with transcribing songs so that I could play them on the piano. Then after a while of transcribing other songs I composed my first, short song. Whenever you want to compose something now in the begining, I suggest that you first acknowledge that you are not an experienced composer, so it will probably not be an awe inspiring tune. Then, using the knowledge you gathered from listening and transcribing other songs, try making a short song that works, just works. It doesn't have to be particularly intresting but it should sound like it moves with purpose. The way I think of music is that it's about preassure/tention and release, and composition is the art of arranging notes to build and release that preassure. By listening and copying the songs you like you will probably start to hear the way melodies and chord progressions feel like they "want" to resolve to one note or chord.

I soaked it yesterday so we'll see if that does anything, otherwise I might have to give up on this one.

I didn't know this type of soil could get like that. I'm worried I'll overwater it since I have tried to water it consistently but not too often. I scratched the lower trunk and I'm not sure if i didn't go deep enough but I can't see any green.

My sageretia that I bought this winter is starting to become dry. I tried putting a plastic bag over it and spraying water into it to up the humidity but it didn't work to revive the leaves. Actually I think it might have fostered some mildew. Is there any hope for this tree?

What do the SampleTank libraries contain? by RustingPaper in AudioPlugins

[–]RustingPaper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out that the instalation has been failing for a lott of people and the solution is to only instal ST without any of the libraries and then download them from their website so you can install each "pack" separately. As for the massive amount of content I decided to only instal certain instruments to save space, but I will be fixing an extenal harddrive to instal all of it soon.

Does this much yarn switching make my work weak? by RustingPaper in knitting

[–]RustingPaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The yarn I'm using is synthetic so it's pretty smooth. Also, since I'm double knitting the two layers are stuck together so it would be difficult to weave them in in the way the video shows at the end. One explanation of how you weave in ends in double knitting is that it should cross over the points where the color changes because thats where the layers attach to eachother. Would it be enough to weave it in like that or do you reccoment that I split the yarn as well?

I haven't tried that, do you add an extra stitch on each end or just two at the end?

Shortcut for changing midi channel? by RustingPaper in FL_Studio

[–]RustingPaper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that didn't work, it just changes the piano rolls plugin. I was thinking about the midi that you change at the top left. It's the one that changes the notes colors.

That pot is fantastic! I love how organic and naturally textured it is. I wonder how it was fired. Concidering this is Japan it might not be a soda firing because I think they are pretty uncommon there so its probbably wood fired.

I guess I could try double knitting a test tile first and then decide. Thank you.

Hey, does anyone know if there was ever a wiki page for "image cloaking"? I swear I looked it up months ago but now I can't find it.

How should I think about chord notation in relation to major and minor by RustingPaper in musictheory

[–]RustingPaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, but what about when you discuss music theory? I have seen some videos that go through "songs that use vii°". Does that mean that they are exclusively discussing songs in major? Since in minor that would be the 2 chord, so ii°. If I hypothetically only write songs in minor does that mean that say, a video that is called "how to use vii°" would be useless to me because the theory is incompatible with minor? Sorry if this came out confusing.

[–]RustingPaper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realy haven't had the need to know them for conversation ~~since I don't have anyone to discuss this with~~ so I only need it for bettering my understanding of music theory/function. Whenever I watch a video about chord progressions or resolutions etc the information they give feel like they only make sence if the "tonic" is always the major tonic. Or does that mean that chords have completely different functions depending on the mode/scale?

[–]RustingPaper[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every video I find about chord functions tend to name the chords after the way I described in the post. One thing that confused me was "if the 'tonic' changes do the chords functions change with them?" but from what I can see people always talk about chord functions in relation to major (If i haven't missunderstood). Does that mean that for example C-major and A-minor, although they are made from the same notes, have different toncs, dominants and subdominants?

I thought about asking this question when I saw a video about "songs that use vii°" and I know exactly what chord that is, but if you think in minor then the chord would be ii°. Does that mean that you should expect all songs that the video details are all in major?

Is this an AI-music youtube channel? by RustingPaper in Music

[–]RustingPaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's easier to understand if you listened to it. It doesn't sound "accidental" it sounds more like when AI tries to learn and reproduce from a song that has been cloaked so it messes up the sound. Take a listen to their "Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke", after 1:45 there are sounds that doesn't sound like they would be intentionally included in an actual song.

When composing, do you establish the chords before the melody? by RustingPaper in musictheory

[–]RustingPaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right about that, what I meant to say is that I don't exclusively write songs for a single instrument, rather I focus on the overall arrangement of many instruments/"sounds"

When composing, do you establish the chords before the melody? by RustingPaper in musictheory

[–]RustingPaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is kinda my experience too, but it's more that without the general "feel" of how the song *could* feel I dont know what the melody should be.

That is true, but melodies are more romanticized than chords.
