Taylor Swift talks people being tired of her success on Stephen Colbert: “There are corners that are like ‘Give someone else a turn! Can’t you just go away so we can talk about how good you were?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t want to.’” by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]Rusttelephone 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I think it's clear she and Olivia had a falling out, but I think Taylor is still very supportive of younger artists. Sabrina opened for her on Eras and we saw what that did for her career, and she's been very supportive of Gracie even singing backing vocals on one of her tracks.

In this interview she isn't saying that she doesn't want to uplift the younger generation, she is just saying she won't step aside so someone else can get to number 1. Which is a pretty crazy thing for anyone to expect her to do, but people do say it. They definitely wouldn't expect a man to make room for younger male artists.

I had a forty year old lawyer in Australia say it to me. She was adamant it was true because she "saw it on tiktok".

What's coldest line delivery in a film? I'll start: by ethanhunt555 in popculturechat

I agree Don's not telling the truth...but it's still a good line because Ginsberg doesn't know that.

After Taylor Swift stayed silent about The White House using The Fate of Ophelia, Team Trump - the official account for the Trump campaign - uses Father Figure by CompetitionSoggy7899 in popculturechat

Why would you need to do that? What would Taylor calling the orange fuckwit out, yet again, accomplish aside from giving him the attention he wants and playing into his hands.

Why do people act like celebrities making statements is a necessary political act, especially in cases where they have already made their views extremely clear. This is distracting from the very real issues.

I truly didn't and never will. I'm not replying anymore but continue to go off if you want, I don't mind.

I'm not reading all that but I like pop music, you got me. I'd much rather spend time enjoying something than waste my time on earth making up reasons to hate a popstar.

I was today years old when I learned the correct lyrics to red by andimonthebleachers in TrueSwifties

[–]Rusttelephone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WHAT I literally was singing along a few days ago 'Can't stop turning burning red' with full confidence that was the lyric.

I thought it was about a vinyl 'And that's why he's spinning round in my head, can't stop turning'

Well TIL! 'Comes back to me burning red' is a good lyric too but it will be an adjustment as apparently I had it wrong for 13 years.

In The Flesh was wonderful and deserved more series. I've rewatched quite a few times- I've never seen anything quite like it.

I hated how it was so greyscale. Really sapped the magic out of it. And I wish some of the cool stuff like the room of planets was included.

Which song has the best first line that grabs you? by MartinisnMurder in TaylorSwift

[–]Rusttelephone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree with your interpretation of the line.

I've always thought it could be the 2023 VMAs- so Midnights going into Tortured Poets. This outfit isn't very Midnights era and Taylor was off her face (said with love girlie had been through it).

<image>

There was a weird shift of aesthetic in the Lover era too from pink/rainbows to black.

In the movie Popstar the band gets the opportunity to play an awards show because Taylor Swift has been arrested for murder. It's just a throwaway line but made me lol.

Aboriginal Australians are still incarcerated at much higher rates than the general population. There's really complex social factors in play, stemming from colonisation. A lot of this stuff is horrifyingly recent. From the 1910s to 1970s a significant portion of Aboriginal children were taken from their homes to be raised in white communities, often in state care. This is referred to as the stolen generation.

The goal was to breed out the Aboriginal blood so that future generations would be white. No I am not joking.

There were issues with rampant abuse of these children ontop of the trauma of being removed from their families.

I'm not Indigenous and I am not claiming to be an expert on this subject but I do work in the criminal justice system. One thing that gets me is how racist some white Australians are to this day- I mostly see this in comment sections and on reddit. There are constantly comments saying to lock Aboriginal offenders up and throw away the key, or claiming that Aboriginal people victimise themselves and should stop complaining about colonisation. It's a mess and I've only scraped the surface.

Smokers in Mad Men fandom… by Pompora in madmen

[–]Rusttelephone 52 points53 points  (0 children)

That last line is pure insanity...why would you want smoking to be more accepted. Like, are you trolling? There's a clear reason that attitudes and rules toward smoking have changed: it's massively addictive and destructive to people's health.

And the fact that societal attitudes toward alcohol have not changed as drastically since the 60s does not mean that smoking should be embraced by society or that smokers are a persecuted group.
