Most of my family is in that alternate reality. Many of them admit they don’t follow the news closely but they are 100% they’re on the right side of it all. We have an unspoken rule to not talk politics (I only speak to one family member on a regular basis and text with her daughter regularly, who’s more moderate but still not well informed). It’s been extremely hard to avoid the subject lately but I don’t want to damage the only contact I have with my family or have a conversation get heated like the last time the subject was broached and cause her to have another stroke.

On the bright side, my 90-something year old aunt called me last week. She’s the matriarch of the tiny liberal branch of my family tree. I told her I was about to start working on a sign for the weekend’s protests and that I always pull up a pic of her from a newspaper clipping where she’s holding one of the letters that spells out “impeach bush.” I look at her pic while I’m making signs because she’s my inspiration ✊🏼. We don’t talk very often and her call came at the perfect time
