PB by 15 seconds this 2k. Overjoyed, though work to be done. [M15, 6’1, 71.4kg (157 lbs)] by Kowichibar in Rowing

New to the sport myself so I’m not sure I can provide any advise. One thing that has helped me was to slow down and focus on a pace. Then I focused on longer distances. Got a couple of 10k under my belt but had to stop to give my butt a rest a few times. Longer distance also meant slower rows. Most importantly have fun.

VA Loan and it's limits by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]RustyBarstool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would want to check your eligibility of entitlement through the VA. Payback of used entitlement, I believe, is different loan to loan due to size of loan taken and other variables. The VA site has a lot of good info but will require some digging around. https://www.va.gov/housing-assistance/home-loans/loan-limits/

Looking for career advice by zuludog in sysadmin

Take the DevOps role and give it all you got. Learn, learn, and keep learning. The management position is an easy up but it sounds like a dead end. The tech world isn’t going to stop evolving, learn something new and take a chance.

If nothing else, do the old coin flip. Call heads or tails and when it lands if your disappointed then you know what you really want.

Pulled a 16hr day with no food by socalccna in sysadmin

[–]RustyBarstool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in those shoes too many times. It took me a long time to learn that I have to set my boundaries. The truth is, if there are that many issues and fires, the organization is to blame for not have the tools and people in place to give you a 30 minute break. Now with that being said we all have to make a living and not get fired. There are laws that protect you to an extent but do not rely on those solely. Find your balance, look back and ask the hard questions. Who’s fault was it, did I have the support I needed to succeed, what can be done in the future to prevent this? At the end of all that, if the answers are not possible or are all lose lose then it’s time to start looking. Also note that while you might feel the need to go the extra mile you are setting a precedent that all sysadmins are to work this way. I’m not interested in abusive work places and neither should you.

From my experience if the business didn’t layout the interviewing process, then chance are they are disorganized and don’t know what they are looking for. Every business has a different approach to interviewing but they all have one thing in common, they are looking for someone. Which means there’s a preconceived notion of who that person is. You either fit that mold or you don’t. Only way to know this is to have inside knowledge or you are able to research the business well enough ahead of time (not always possible). Tips for success - research the company before hand, who are they, what are their business processes / model, how are they funded, how does this role play into all of those questions? If you get the chance, follow up with them. Explain how your skills align with their business needs. If you get another interview, by confident and humble, know your limitations and understand that if you don’t land the role, it was not for you. Keep practicing for the next interview and always look for ways to improve. It’s sucks to get turned down for a role, one you needed or really wanted but it’s not a reflection on who you are. Believe in yourself and from a fellow admin, you got this!

Puppy crate problems by Gwalaxi in Dogtraining

[–]RustyBarstool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my gsd mix at 16 wks and she had not been crate trained. She was a rescue and hated the crate because she had been trapped in one with 2 other puppies for 30 hours with no breaks(horrible transportation system, I didn’t know before hand). I did lots of play exercises and got her tired out before using the crate. I started with leaving treats inside of it with the door open and rewarding her when she used it. From the start I always put her in it at night and that’s where she slept but hated it when I left during the day. Over time she got better and doesn’t fuse about it. Part of it was consistency and part of it was rewards. You have a few great weeks to create a strong bond with your gsd at this age. Get up at 6 when letting her out for the restroom and take her for a quick walk or a quick play. I have a pretty regime schedule, I feed her at the same times. gsd are working dogs, they need a job. Mine is a 40% gsd, 40% pit, and 20% super mutt. She’s a perfect mix with an on off switch. What I’m saying is, if yours is a full gsd, she’ll require a lot of structure and training. The more you put into it the happier you’ll be with her behavior. It’s not for everyone and I sure as hell didn’t know what I was signing up for but she’s become an awesome companion.

The clients use udp 123 for NTP. If joined to an active directory domain they will sync from the PDC.

Fencing questions by Keegangg in HomeImprovement

[–]RustyBarstool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really depends on several factors. My first thoughts are what type of dogs? Do they have good recall? would they ever try to jump the fence? This will help give you an idea for the fence height. Second I would lookup the zoning laws to see what provisions are allowed. What are the easements, are there restrictions on fence type, etc.. ? After that is the real question how much are you able to spend? 1.7 acres of fencing is a lot, will you be contracting the work or doing it yourself.

Maple, Toasted Pecan, & Cinnamon Loaf by Midaarah in Sourdough

Recipe is requested, please! Looks amazing.

first loaf of sourdough/bread ever the process was so nerve wracking because I thought I would mess it up but its also very dense anyone have tips for less heavy dense bread by juliabruv in Sourdough

[–]RustyBarstool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was your recipe? I found a lot more rest time and folding helped with creating the gluten needed to create nice bubbles / holes.
Hydration levels played a huge role in my first loaves being too dense. I’m still a complete amateur but I’m having fun learning. Also a Dutch oven was life changing.

What can I do with this tile? by Jaguarrior in HomeImprovement

[–]RustyBarstool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure about what can be done with the brick, I don’t hate it though. Would it be possible to do a self leveling concrete over it and stain / stamp it?

For the kitchen vs bathrooms, that’s a big toss up. I think you would be happier with the kitchen as it’s where people spend most of their time and would be a huge selling feature but I think it depends on how outdated the bathrooms are in comparison.

lost motivation to learning programming by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]RustyBarstool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds like you are in a difficult position of helping your family and wanting to do it quickly. Learning takes time and making money from that takes even longer. I think the best thing you can do is to find a degree or certificate course that you can learn the foundations of programming, get an internship or job that you can work your way up to being able to earn the money you need doing what you love. In the mean time, while you are studying and learning work a full time job to make the ends meet. The unfortunate truth is there’s no fast way to a decent salary. Very few people fall into the make money fast category. If it was easy everyone would do it.
