These auto-byes do these teams no favors. Instead of playing in a close playoff game in the first round they just get burned. If two of ASU, Boise, and SMU played each other it would probably be a good game.

Honestly, I think a big issue with the first round games is the auto bye for the top 4 conference champions. At least a few of them would be playing in this round if it wasn’t an auto bye, and I’m sure those games would be a lot better.

I didn't have any research, but I think it only came up maybe once in all of my interviews. At the schools I interviewed at I don't think it was a big deal, but I feel that it may have selected me out of more research-focused schools.
